The Chequers Inn, Goldhanger

Paid a visit in February and there were two nice coal fires to welcome us. Four beers on tap and the food was good at reasonable prices. I will be be returning.

The Talbot, North Weald Basset

This was once a great pub in the old tradition. Now it is run by a chain and is really a come all restaurant. Shame but that is the only way pubs can mak a living today.

Battesford Court, Witham

This is one of the better Wetherspoons pubs - it certainly knocks the Barking Dog into a cocked hat. The sirloin steak is good value at under 7 and as an extra for just 55p the onion rings are served in a bowl not the usual four or five as in some pubs. A good pint of Stella as well.

The Peter Boat, Leigh on Sea

What a marvelous location for a pub - right by the riverside. Very busy on summer evenings, but there is plenty of extra boozing space around the car park. There are still some stalls open nearby where you can get fresh seafood during the day, and you cannot get better than Leigh on Sea.

The Black Horse, Brentwood

Re - the comments of our anonymous member. Yes, the pub was severely damaged by fire about five years ago. When I got there for my lunchtime pint and saw the fire engines outside, it only took me ten minutes to realise that I would not be drinking there that day!! The roof is new, but the walls etc. are older than me.

The Barking Dog, Barking

A noisy cheap and cheerful Wetherspoon - food not bad and some good beer promotions, but you take your life in your hands in Barking on a Friday or Saturday evening.

Red House, Croxley Green

On my first visit this year, I was disappointed to find several more gaming machines had been installed and the tables squashed together, but the beer and the food were very good.

The Gunmakers, Clerkenwell

I used to go to the Gunmakers on a Sunday lunchtime in the early 1980's. In those days there was complimentary seafood and extra salty roast potatos to make you drink more of the excellent beer. It was great - does anyone know if this is still the case?

The Argyll Arms, Oxford Circus

Not a bad pub, but when the Palladium turns out it is crazy. Ideal for a train home from Oxford Circus tube.

The Ship Inn, Coalhouse

The lout from the lane says it all - this is a pub for people who want a cheap evening out and watch TV at the same time - beam me up Scotty.

Catcracker, Stanford Le Hope

What a dump - a modern type of pub patronised by people of low intelligence. the only reason you would go there is to pick up a slapper or have a fight.

Ye Three Lords, Aldgate

A decent city pub but the food is a bit limited. It is busy at lunchtimes and between 5pm and 7pm. The trouble is when the pub gets quiet the manager will have an early night and ring the bell. Very annoying if you are just getting the taste!!

The Nags Head, Moreton

A typical pub for students with no sense and not much money. How can you drink stout and backcurrant??

The Gloucester Arms, Marylebone

Quite a small bar, typical London prices, average food quality served at lunchtimes and evenings. Sky TV etc.

Metropolitan Bar, Baker Street

This used to be the London Underground recruitment centre, quite awesome for some people who were desperate for a job. Now it is a pub and quite awesome for people who want a quiet pint and a chat. Beer quality and price 7/10 food quality is just 4/10.

The Butt and Oyster, Chelmondiston

Good food and beer, but why are the staff so miserable?
The lunch time specials are good value at 10 for two - you can have four for 20 but not three for 15, can anyone explain?

The Bull and Gate, Kentish Town

Serves a decent pint of Stella and Bass, but when the music starts it is time to go.

28 Feb 2005 15:51

The Artichoke, Shenfield Common

A Toby's Carvery pub which serves good carvery style meals. The meat portions leave something to be desired, but as much vegetables as you like.

28 Feb 2005 15:40

The Boater, Leagrave

A modern type of pub serving reasonably priced food and a good range of beers and spirits

28 Feb 2005 15:35

Red House, Croxley Green

A cheerful pub with a large food section serving reasonable pub grub.

28 Feb 2005 11:26

The Rose and Crown, Pilgrims Hatch

A friendly pub serving a good range of beers and ggod priced pub food. There is an attached restaurant for more special evenings out.

28 Feb 2005 11:19

The Black Horse, Brentwood

The original pub is thought to be 400 years old, but has been extended twice in the past twenty five years. It is run by the Vintage Inns group and serves good pub grub at reasonable prices.
