The Okeover Arms, Mappleton

Stopped for a pint whilst on a bike ride around the peak recently. Great beer, from a choice of four real ales I think it was, inc a couple I'd not come across before. What particularly impresses me is this was probably the fourth time we've stopped here over the last couple of years and it's been this good every time.

The Three Horseshoes, Newport

Thoroughly agree with everything said in the previous review. We enjoyed excellent pints of Tribute and Shropshire Gold this weekend!

Slightly misleading to have it listed under Newport. Sambrook is only a mile off the A41 if you're passing....

The Wharf Inn, Shebdon

As a fan of Six Bells beers I had no problem at all this weekend with just being offered a gorgeous pint of Cloud Nine. Unless you can shift the volume I'd rather a pub offers a limited range of beers but keeps them well, as they have done every time I've been in the Wharf. They also had Westons Old Rosie cider on offer.

I can also recommend the huge thick gammon and double egg, their portions are certainly on the generous side!

The Three Tuns, Bishops Castle

Great pint of 1642 while on a ride last week. Perfect example of a beer that doesn't need to be strong in order to be tasty. Food looked nice too, lots of people eating.

Swan, Slaithwaite

We had intended to head for the Commercial on a recent transpennine crawl but ended up here somehow? What a stroke of luck, left the hoards behind for a while and supped the best pint of the trip, Ossett brewerys George ale I think it was. Great little place, if you're on the crawl I'd recommend making time for two in Slaithwaite.

The Burton Bridge Inn, Burton-Upon-Trent

Didnt get to this one on a recent Burton crawl, but squeezed in a quick one while on a ride yesterday. Turned out they had a beer (& sausage!) festival on, great stuff but we didnt have time to stay and do it justice. Great pub, great beer, on a par with the best in Burton.

Blue Bell, Melbourne

4 different Shardlow beers on offer, we tried the Narrow Boat which was a very nice pint, and the Rev Eaton which was superb! Unfortunately have to agree with some earlier comments about the bars, but full marks for the ale.

Ebrington Arms, Chipping Camden

Great little pub, interesting old building and most importantly a good selection of great beer. We only popped in for one on a bike ride at the weekend, cant remember what I had (think it was called something to do with trains?) but it went down a treat! I imagine if you were planning on eating you would want to get there early.

The Swan Hotel, Kineton

Always good to see a pub brought back to life. Good selection of beers, I remember seeing Hobgoblin, Tribute & Doombar, plus their 'own' Swan for the Road. I tried the latter but not very inspiring. A good number of folks in for mid afternoon, but still work to be done in my opinion.

The Royal Oak, Whatcote

Excellent village local, friendly welcome and great beer, the Batemans we sampled was particularly tasty!

Fox and Hounds, Cheswardine

Certainly does now, had a gorgeous pint of Slumbering Monk this lunchtime. They also had Joules IPA on I think. Very good lunchtime deals too, small ish portions but two courses for a fiver was great value (dont know if that was in the week only?) Will be back to sample their evening menu soon!

Old Cottage Tavern, Burton on Trent

Didnt expect to find anywhere to rival the Coopers on a recent Burton crawl but this place did. Excellent range of beers, of which their own Oak was a lovely pint, and we tried several of the guests which were equally good, but I cant remember what they were now....

3 Feb 2012 10:38

The Coopers Tavern, Burton-Upon-Trent

Had time to stay for a couple this time, inc best pint of Bass I've had in ages, and the Mumbling Skunk was just as good as last time. Cant speak highly enough of this place.

Devonshire Arms, Burton-Upon-Trent

Handy meeting place prior to a tour round Burton, being just round the corner from the station. Great pub, excellent Burton Bridge beers and wonderful arrangement with a local sandwich shop to order food!

The Brandy Cask, Pershore

Stopped off for a pint on a bike ride last Sunday at around 12.30, as we have done several times over the last couple of years. Unfortunately once again it was very quiet, which is a real shame as they consistently offer a great range of their own ales, draught cider and a couple of guests. The Brandy Snapper in particular (as others have mentioned) is a lovely pint! With a plum location in the middle of town, and a great beer garden for the warmer days and evenings, I really hope they get the trade they deserve at other times.

14 Jan 2012 18:18

The Galton Arms, Himbleton

Great pub with absolutely top class Bathams on offer! We called in on a bike ride at around 3pm on Sunday and they were still doing a roaring trade, unfortunately we had to get back to Worcester before dark so only stayed for one. Didnt eat but food looked good.

14 Jan 2012 17:58

The Wyche Inn, Malvern

Perfect place for a stop if you're out walking on the Malverns, as we were yesterday, but easy to miss as its just round the corner on the Worcester side of the ridge on the B4218. Excellent well kept beer, with a good mix of local ales and offerings from further afield. We tried Kinver Crystal, Otter and Exmoor Gold yesterday, all good pints. Decent bar meals too, at sensible prices. (Also had a Sunday roast there last month which was good value). Dog friendly too, and did I forget to mention the view...?

The Wellington, Birmingham

Outstanding city centre pub, a permanent ongoing beer festival! 16 wide ranging ales on, and the ones we tried were all well kept, the place gets an unreserved 10 from me. Seems like nobody is mad enough to try to offer any competition in the city centre, however we did later discover some excellent boozers in the Jewellery Quarter/Hockley area which are well worth exploring if you're up for a stroll.

The Bull, Birmingham

1st stop on JQ crawl yesterday, lovely little pub of the type you're pleasantly surprised to find this close to the city centre. There were two ales on, Pedigree and Cotleigh Harrier, we went for the latter which was spot on. Agree completely with other recent reviews, and would add they do a great steak n onion butty (with chips)!

31 Dec 2011 16:22

The Prince of Wales, Birmingham

6th, and final, stop on JQ crawl last night. Was only really looking for one on the way back to the station and not expecting much but this is an excellent boozer, and (judging by other accounts) even better if you're looking for live music at other times in the week. Think there were 7 or 8 ales on, of which we tried 4 between us and all met with approval. Next time we're over here for a concert or something I'll certainly try to find it again.

31 Dec 2011 16:10

The Red Lion, Hockley,jewellry quarter

5th stop on JQ crawl, and tied for top spot with the Brown Lion in my view. I think there were 4 ales on, of which most of us went for the Saddleback - another new one for me, which was so good I quickly got over any initial disappointment at the lack of Bathams. As with the Clifden dont let the Art Bar tag put you off for this is a top quality boozer, with traditional decor and a warm inviting feel to the place.

31 Dec 2011 15:57

The Lord Clifden, Birmingham

2nd stop on JQ crawl. The Art Bar tag almost put me off bothering, which would have been a shame as it's a great pub, making a good attempt to be all things to all people. Even late afternoon it was very busy, with lots of folks eating. We tried both of the UAB beers which were good, and there were a couple of other ales on as well.

31 Dec 2011 15:38

The Church Inn, Hockley

3rd stop on a JQ crawl, nice pint of Taylors Best which I feel never gets the praise it deserves due to being overshadowed by their Landlord. Think there were a couple of other ales on but cant recall what. The pub itself was fairly basic, but with a nice fire going in the back room. Very quiet though, even for early evening, but there seems to be some tough competition locally?

31 Dec 2011 15:22

The Brown Lion, Birmingham

4th stop on a JQ crawl and first time I had come across the Two Towers range, had the Baskerville which was a lovely pint. In fact so good that we broke the days one pint per pub policy and stayed for another! Decent basic sort of place which was quite busy for early evening. For a rating I'd go as far as a 9 on the quality of the beer.

31 Dec 2011 15:01

The Old Talbot, Hilton

Shut Sat lunchtime, and looked permanently closed? Sounded like it was doing well a year ago, what happened?

4 Dec 2011 13:23

The Hawk and Buckle, Etwall

Agree with most of the previous review, but we must have caught the landlady on a better day. Decent enough pints of Brakspears and Pedi.

4 Dec 2011 13:19

The Coopers Tavern, Burton-Upon-Trent

Outstanding little pub down a back street near the centre of town. Dont be put off by the apparent lack of a bar as you walk in, it is there and offering at least 4 on hand pump and another two or three drawn directly from the barrel. My Joules Slumbering Monk was a lovely pint, and my mate rated his Pardoes Dark Swan equally highly.

Never been anywhere quite like this, well worth the effort of seeking out!

4 Dec 2011 13:12

Sun Inn, Leintwardine

The comfortable modern airy extension was very pleasant but not quite what I expected. Having never been before, but well aware of the legendary status of the place, I wondered what regular visitors made of it?

More significantly the beer was great. My mate had the Hobsons Best and I went for the Spire, both were on form. Also appreciated the touch of the free pork pie on the bar.

28 Nov 2011 16:00

White Horse Inn, Clun

Cracking village pub! Think there were 4 ales on offer, of which we had the local Clun Pale, which was excellent and apparently brewed next door. Lovely open fire was much appreciated, and bar meals looked very tempting too, but we were cycling and needed to push on. Highly recommended!

28 Nov 2011 15:35

The Dysart Arms, Bunbury

Great pub, would echo earlier comments about warm welcome, nice location and great beer. 4 ales on, we tried the Triumph Spitfire which I'd not had before but will certainly look out for again in the future. On the down side 3.40/pint, but this was partially compensated by the generous glasses of nuts!

21 Nov 2011 12:19

The Pheasant Inn, Tattenhall

Having read some earlier reviews we half expected to be turned away at the door, being two grubby cyclists, but far from it! Three real ales on offer of which we went for the Eastgate, which was very moorish. Ok it's more a restaurant than pub, but the beer was excellent so it gets thumbs up from me.

(Takes a bit of finding, its up the hill at Higher Burwardsley, not in Tattenhall itself.)

21 Nov 2011 12:02

The Bhurtpore Inn, Aston

This pub is a full time ongoing beer festival! Been in a few times now and every pint we've tried has been top notch (Twisted Spire and one from Swansea yesterday were both great). Also like the way they always seem to get some good variety into the ever changing beer menu. Never been able to stay long enough to do it justice yet, but found out from the barman there is a B&B just down the road....
