The Rosemary Branch, Islington

Lovely place. Took a bunch of friends here last night and had great service from Jason the publican. The Fullers IPA was very good, they run a selection of decent strong lagers too. The chef happily knocked up a few bowls of scampi, whitebait, fries etc. for us rather than insisting that we choose main meals from the menu. Well stocked jukebox which was free last night, and we weren't kicked out til midnight. Bonus

Extremely happy that I chose to come here rather than deal with the snooty staff and spend-pressure that I got from a certain organic pub on nearby St.Peters street.

The Swan Hotel, Arundel

Not much more to add, other than the HSB seemed good and the staff were all very friendly and courteous. We did stay for a meal, the Kitchen reopening at 6pm on a Sunday. The panfried mullet was well delicious though a modest portion, but came with generous amounts of roast vegetables. At 12.50 it was perhaps a little pricey, but far better than your average pub fayre. Great location next to the river too.

The Fountain, Chichester

Went here yesterday, after perusing most of the other pubs in the centre of town it seemed like the best bet. The barman confirmed (well he would) that it was 'the last real pub in Chichester'. Had two quick pints of very well-kept Sussex outside on the picnic tables given the gorgeous weather. The interior seemed comfortable, with old floorboards and just a few tables and chairs in the two bar areas at the front and a restaurant area at the back. The gents upstairs were not as pleasant, and needed a bit of work. Otherwise a really nice place to stop for a pint.

The Queens Head and Artichoke, Regents Park

I visited this pub for the fourth time last night and was for the first time disappointed. They generally have two cask beers, but last night the Pedigree was off and I watched in vain as the last of Ushers dribbled into my empty glass from the pump. The barmaid did show some sympathy, but its pretty incompentent to let both bitters fail at the same time isn't it? Went for a Lowenbrau instead and regretted it immediately. The interior is still beautiful, but the (all female spanish/hispanic) staff seemed a little more concerned with shouting gossip over the music than looking after the punters.
The food did look very good though. I'll return again, hopefully on a better bitter night.

The Double Locks, Exeter

Visited this place a couple of years ago, so my comments are probably a little out of date, but:
Truly incredible! Everything about this pub was fantastic, the enormous selection of kegs and casks behind the bar; The beardy, cheery, rugby-shirted staff; the quality food; the beautiful location; the free camping in their garden.

It may just be me, but I fetishise this pub as being the finest I've ever visited.

The Captain Kidd, Wapping

Took a bunch of friends here two years ago after a river boat tour. Had a large alcove reserved, the Landlord kindly evicted its occupants upon our arrival. Perfect location, with a great terrace on the river. Its a huge multi-storey pub, with a restaurant at the top, and as such can get very busy with large parties (like my own), feels perhaps a little touristy and tacky but not enough to hide the incredible riverside ambience. In that respect its quite similar to The Anchor in Southwark. Can't remember the quality of the beer, was far too pissed.

The Shaston Arms, Soho

Great interior, dark and inviting, lots of booths lit by low-wattage bulbs and ancient red candles. Tends to get extremely busy during the week, frequently overflowing into the street. Food is pretty standard pub-grub, sandwiches and the like.

The Star and Garter, Soho

Indeed, its a lovely old soho boozer with plenty of character. I've been going there for years, but only when I've got plenty of cash - its probably the most expensive pub in the area, and that's saying something for Soho. The beer can be bit unreliable - I tend to stick to lager in this pub, but that may be more to the company that I keep when drinking after work.

The Duke (of York), Holborn

A quirky little pub, tucked down a quiet little mews near Holborn. Tricky to find but well worth it. Has a continental vibe about it, from the parque flooring to the pop-art paintings of movie icons around the walls. Nice looking restaurant area in the back room, but haven't yet tried the food. Well kept beer (Adnams Bombardier) and Sunday papers make for a nice social.

The Grand Union, Westbourne Park

Took a few friends here for a saturday lunch for my Birthday last year - by narrowboat - It was the perfect way to arrive. I'd booked a large table in the downstairs room, and it was ready and waiting for us. The service from the barmaid (forgot her name, sorry was exemplary, and the food was very good without suffering from gastro pricing.
The beer was also good - Adnams if I remember.
