Like the last 2 reviewers have mentioned it seems to be attracting unsavoury characters/dossers these days. Popped in for a quick one before catching a bus the other day and like cellarbuoy got ignored by the bar staff who, in this case, were more intent on encouraging the two stinking halfwits at the bar to swear even more loudly and regularly than they already were.

Can you predict next Saturdays Lotto numbers for me Cellarbuoy. Joking aside though yes it was batting on a sticky wicket recently, did hear the food wasn't so good and trade seemed to be dropping off (was in one Saturday night before Xmas and you could count on two hands the people in).

Well you got your wish Cellarbuoy regarding not lasting too long looking at what they've posted on Facebook. Doors closing again...

Just one point of order Cellarbuoy. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but it was the owners other venture The Live Room in Taunton that went bust rather than this place in itself. The reason given on the Facebook page for leaving here was due to "health and personal" reasons.
As for the pub itself, well did enjoy a few pints of Thatchers Gold last Sunday with some relaxing Jazz going on which made for a nice visit. Been in a few times now (admittedly mainly Saturay and Sunday afternoons) and seems to be getting a bit busier each time.

Believe this has now been rebranded as the Knights Rest.

Don't give me that Heavy Fandango, your secret's safe with me lol!!!

Have to disagree to an extent on the previous review. Although never having eaten under it's current Jolies restaurant, when I've popped in for a drink the staff are now excellent and polite when I have experienced them recently and wouldn't think twice about a pint there unlike under the previous managers. Shocked at £10 for 3 pints??? Well that's Spoons drinkers for you...

Walked in over the weekend to met by a very drunk young 'un who proceeded to wipe his bogey on me. A rather tipsy landlord couldn't give a badger so needless to say I won't be welcome back...hopefully along with said young 'un who now has a few bruises.

I was initially fooled by a similar sign on the old melodies bar/photo place Cellarbuoy. Unfortunately it's just another local council idea to make shop fronts look attractive to potential investers rather than an actual buyer doing it.

At least the Black Horse has now reopened Cellarbuoy now taking a percentage of it's clientele back.

I believe the managers of this pub are leaving in the next couple of weeks. Whether the current owners will continue with the pub or shut it down is anyone's guess IMHO at the mo. As cellerbuoy mentions, it's just an ordinary pub just about getting by/surviving.

I expect a reasonable pub with reasonable music, that's all I ask for. Having never been anywhere need the Castle I fail to see what that has to do with anything (maybe I admit to visting Brazz once or twice in the distant past). I do like a bit of hard rock/metal (honest...!!!), not so keen on them Goths mind but. As for the complaining about other people I suggest MadPete fails to see irony when it appears (and seems to be another BITE one hit wonder...).

The Naval and Military, Taunton
I believe this has now been sold. Whether it'll become a pub again who knows but, like Dr. Pangloss, I don't know why someone would invest in it as a pub.
9 Oct 2011 09:08
Don't worry Montie49 the chavs are no more in this pub as it's now closed and becoming a Tesco Express.
9 Oct 2011 09:03
PMSL.
Quite the contrary regarding quiet classical music. Just accept that people have views conflicting with your own sometimes. If you can't may I suggest it might be you who needs to move on and not bother re-appearing...!!! Your loss mate.

Erm, unless I'm missing something, you do realise you've gone from being owner of the place to a paying customer now Wiggi. Get your story straight!!!
6 Sep 2011 19:42
You mean 15 by the dates you've listed and and about 9 that at least may involve some sort of heavy guitar laden noise.
6 Sep 2011 19:00
Ah nice try Wiggi, infact I have been in your pub numerous times either of my own accord or dragged in by mates hoping to at least give it a chance so to speak. Although Wiggi says his music is different 5 days a week etc a good percentage is still of the let's turn up the volume and see how much nonsense we can come up with without resembling a tune (Slipknot or something similar I believe it's called). I have to take your word on the kitchen but redocorating on going??? Mmmmm...!!!
I admit it's better than the previous owners who seemed to thrive (or not as the case was) on it being some dive but until my next hopefull visit in which I might just give your invite a go then, I'll have to have to go by your word.
6 Sep 2011 12:07
It has re-opened but don't be fooled by the previous comment. People will do well to take note that the kitchen that is supposed to be up to scratch received 1 out of 5 from the hygiene inspectors (in serious need of some bringing up to scratch). Also the slow decorating mentioned must be so slow that it has stopped. Of note the same knuckledraggers and Rab C. Nesbitt wannabe's still drink here when not drinking in the Coal Orchard that infested the place beforehand. It may be a music venue but the "music" (some sort of heavy guitar laden noise) seems to attract even more of the buggers, each to their own I guess.

Popped in for a drink Sunday lunchtime now that it's re-opened with new owners and have to say found it much improved and enjoyed my stay (compared to my previous visits/comments). Best of luck to the new owners, keep it going!!!
20 Oct 2009 17:51
Walked into this place and the barmaid looked shocked at the presence of some custom, unclean, dark, dingy and falling apart. Nasty.
11 Oct 2009 17:10
Great pub with friendly locals, bar staff and owners. Great Sunday lunch too!!!

The Rose and Crown Inn, Taunton
Essentially a glorified school/holiday camp dinner hall with little to no atmosphere/charm. Definately not the sort of pub you'd go a for a few beers.
6 Aug 2009 18:19
Believe me Dr.Pangloss they really haven't. If like me and most others in there, you want to wait and be ignored by the barmaids and not get served for hours please come again. As Little Britain catchphrased "Computer says no!!!"
30 Jul 2009 21:16
Was told this place was now boarded up. Not surprised if it's true.
28 Jan 2009 21:03
Decided to return to give it a 2nd chance but never got the chance as it's now closed. Not surprised from my previous comment and the 2 or 3 suspicious reviews here making it look worse.
12 Oct 2008 12:34
Definately not a drinkers pub as described previously. Food OK if you want to eat but not the sort of place I'd make a beeline for.
13 Jul 2008 16:11
The Merry Monk, Monkton Heathfield
A bland pub in all respects. Odd as I never seem to get the same change twice for the same round!!!
13 Jul 2008 16:08
Agree about the previous comment regarding the other pub "The Merry Monk". Not the sort of pub where I got the same change twice ;-)
For the same round that is!!! My mistake!!! D'oh!!!
13 Jul 2008 16:05
Again find myself disagreeing with Yoyo. Considering the clap trap we have to put up with in Taunton this is a nice gem close to Taunton with good value food. Yes it may put more emphasis on eating rather than drinking but does manage to cater as a drinking pub IMHO just about. Agree about the previous comment regarding the other pub "The Merry Monk". Not the sort of pub where I got the same change twice ;-)
13 Jul 2008 16:04
Agree with the previous comment and call me grumpy but wasn't all that thrilled to have the barmaids little dears screaming loudly and jumping about me at 10:45pm. Can't see it being open that long again. Come back Carl, all is forgiven!!!
12 Jul 2008 20:55
No wonder YoYo is confused by chopin as I'm reliably informed, ahem, that said massage parlour is in Middle Street not Canon Street where this pub is. Still the pub is a dive though.
27 Apr 2008 17:44
The previous review from Siamesequeen looks a bit suspicious...!!! The afforementioned cook recently went and his replacement was good but not that good, well with my Sunday lunch anyhow. The 2 owners would rather leave the poor old over worked barmaid to it on a busy night and spend time yapping/hugging people. I knew I was in further trouble when the landlord had to get someone else to poor a glass of wine saying "I have no experience of this". I strongly don't recommend this pub!!!
22 Dec 2007 15:17
Just re-opened again after fire damage. Too expensive and although the bar staff were a slight improvement on my last visit there was still people waiting to be served with no one in sight for ages behind the bar or with the 4 or so people thinking there conversation was more important.

The Harvest Moon, North Newton
For once I find myself disagreeing with YoYo. Yes the one member of staff on hand was friendly but what a hole. The decor and seating, certainly in the bar area, is well nuff said really and I swear I shot a good percentage of the locals recently on Resident Evil 4.
24 Sep 2007 19:16
Excellent pub and one of the few excellent ones in Taunton. Value for money, good atmosphere and a decent pint of Guinness.

Back to beggarsbanquet's profile
The Canal Inn, Wrantage
Changes it's name to "The Far Canal" a few months back. Gone back to just being another tired old pub on a tired old street.
