The Old Fountain, Old Street

One of the best real ale pubs in the area and justifiably CAMRA East London & City branch's pub of the year 2013.
Senberbex......I think your taste buds, as well as your spatial perception were seriously disoriented.......Fosters???? Agreeably palatable????? :)

12 Dec 2013 18:18

The George, Croydon

Shut it, slerpy, you twat.

29 May 2013 08:12

The Glamorgan, Croydon

Expensive, compared to what? Wetherspoons? Probably the least expensive ale in the vicinity. The Oval, Builders Arms, Porter & Sorter, Cricketers (Lebanon Road) are all more expensive. Await abuse and trolling in true slerpy fashion.

The Glamorgan, Croydon

Tip-top pints of Harveys Sussex and Mordue Spring Tyne, definitely justifying this pub's entry in the current Good Beer Guide. I haven't personally experienced the owners' rudeness as expressed by other reviewers, though a couple of friends have also mentioned this to me, so there is definitely an issue there.

The George, Croydon

Slerpy, you have now proved once and for all that you are an utter idiot, and are in danger of bringing CAMRA into disrepute. Before you say that I am doing the same, note that I am not a CAMRA member.

1. My job is not boring and I have an exemplary employment record.
2. The Glamorgan is one of the best pubs in the local area for real ale - its entry in the current Good Beer Guide confirms this.
3. A while back you wrote about the Glamorgan: "Having had a meal here recently I must say that this is the pick of Croydon's pubs for food ( o.k. a tad pricey), a few decent real ales as well".

So you are inconsistent as well.

25 Mar 2012 10:43

The George, Croydon

Dementer, spot on! One advantage of slerpy's ubiquitous, boring and asinine posts is that they give an indication of which pubs he visits, so we may avoid...

21 Mar 2012 19:43

The One Tun, Goodge Street

An OK pub, but no more than that. As is the norm with most Youngs pubs these days, it has been messed around with. Beer quality is good. The most annoying thing is that tables are frequently reserved before football matches. This is a pub, not a restaurant, so please stop this practice...it should be first come, first served.

11 Feb 2012 13:49

The Glamorgan, Croydon

....and also because it is never open when local residents would use it most - i.e. Sundays and bank holidays.

30 Aug 2011 06:46

The Glamorgan, Croydon

Unfortunately it is. The truth is that the majority of the local residents no longer go to this pub because of the sheer masses of office workers that take it over at times.

27 Jul 2011 13:03

Nambucca, Upper Holloway

Great venue for music, but shocking door staff (making us queue although the bar was almost empty, confiscated sealed cans of lager(fair enough, but failed to return them when we left). Greene King Abbot was undrinkable, but they continued to serve it even after being advised of this.

30 Apr 2011 11:18

Funky Munky, Camberwell

Pub now closed. Munky777, why are you so obsessed with how people dress? The only thing that matters is how they behave and whether they are clean. Indeed there were lots of thing wrong with this pub, but people's dress wasn't one of them.

16 Mar 2011 18:04

CASK Pub and Kitchen, Pimlico

nigam2000......given the other reviews, and my experience over many visits, it sounds as if you were the one causing the problms. Fine beer range in tip-top condition, served by enthusiastic staff.

11 Mar 2011 21:55

The Skylark, Croydon

Slerpy, crawl back in your hole. We are all sick of your pathetic ramblings. A good reason to visit the Skylark now that you will not be going there any more.

19 Feb 2011 12:11

The Glamorgan, Croydon

Went for a quiet meal the other Saturday night. Our peace was soon shattered by an excrutiatingly loud live band in the other bar, hired for a private party, which made conversation well nigh impossible. If we hadn't got so far into our meal we would have walked out. A shame, because the food, drink and service was very good.
Today, fancy a quick beer on the way home......no chance, this time the whole pub is closed for a private party. No doubt another braying crowd of the stripey shirt brigade.....where do they come from?
No wonder the locals are decamping to the Builders, Windmill or Oval.

6 Nov 2010 16:05

The Spread Eagle, Croydon

The ubiquitous slerpy strikes again. What are these 'failing pubs' nearby...the Green Dragon, Royal Standard, Dog & Bull and the Ship are all doing well and also serve a good range of well-kept ales.

24 Sep 2010 19:53

The The Rail View, South Croydon

That's decided then, one pub I shall continue visiting, knowing that slerpy will not be going there any more.

8 Sep 2010 15:26

The Glamorgan, Croydon

...and wampy, is there such thing as a decent pint of lager (unless it's one of the proper Belgian or German ones)......?

31 Jul 2010 17:54

The Glamorgan, Croydon

wampy, the point is that in the City (or Canary Wharf) you expect suits, and, yes I do go out in the City sometimes. To be fair the problem is not what people wear but how they behave, and it has to be said that a few of the corporate people are loud and somewhat arrogant. (that is not to say that the real locals are perfect either!). Several of my neighbours say that they will no longer visit this pub at times when it is busy, which is a shame. Cross Road is a mainly residential area so it would be really good if the pub catered more for the local residential community. Beer quality remains good to very good.

31 Jul 2010 17:51

The Stand Up Inn, Lindfield

Slerpy, you're at it again. I have used this pub many times and found it to be superb. Don't you see a common theme here......has it occurred to you that you seem to spend your life antagonising bar staff or making rude comments about them and that's why you so often get on the wrong side of the staff? If you carry on like this you will get thrown out of every pub you visit.

20 Jun 2010 11:43

Woodies, New Malden

Slerpy, please STOP posting abusive, irrelevant and mildly racist comments. These are becoming extremely tiresome and annoying and you are in danger of bringing CAMRA into disrepute. Stick to real pub news and beer range / quality.

19 Jun 2010 11:43

The Cleveland Arms, Bayswater

Went there yesterday evening......as usual the beers were in excellent nick, but my visit was spoilt by one arrogant youngster who thought it funny to bray at 11 on the volume scale about how much money he's got. The slightly eccentric locals are great......but there's no place for people like that.

16 May 2010 16:48

The Oval Tavern, Croydon

The sort of pub where you go in for a quick half and end up having 3 pints.......say no more. Consistently good real ales and very friendly staff and customers.

17 Jan 2010 20:10

The Oval Tavern, Croydon

Great locals' pub with friendly staff and customers. Refreshingly free of corporate bores unlike some of the other pubs in the area. Excellent live music events - mainly blues. Normally 2 well-kept real ales. Highly recommended.

22 Dec 2009 08:25

The Water Poet, Shoreditch

An OK pint of Pride, once the barstaff had worked out that we were next to be served....the ill-mannered Shorditch crowd were up to their usual tricks, attempting to push in....

27 Sep 2009 20:02

The Glamorgan, Croydon

Noticed that this pub is deservedly in the 2010 Good Beer Guide. Just pick your time to visit to avoid the suits.

27 Sep 2009 19:59

1802, Canary Wharf

Yet another corporate bore-bar in Canary Wharf, with the usual over-loud music, no real beer and slow service. Extremely expensive, too. Why can't someone in Canary Wharf open a bar whose USP is NO MUSIC?????

9 Jul 2009 13:21

The Horseshoe Inn, London Bridge

Beer quality only average and the (few) punters who were there created quite an intimidating atmosphere. Service lacking any welcome. Disappointing as this could be a good pub, if people were a bit friendlier. Maybe I just visited at a bad time.

27 Jun 2009 22:24

The Swiss Cottage, Shoreham by Sea

Very family-oriented, well-kept garden and a great duck pond. Food was tasty and the service was very friendly. The landlady takes rescued birds from the likes of WADARS and this is to be encouraged. Three real ales, not a particularly exciting range, but all in good nick.
Will certainly go back.

4 Jun 2009 18:45

The Porter and Sorter, Croydon

sphinx11 - try writing some half-decent English, then you might get your point across.
Short pints are the norm in this pub when you actually do get served and the bar staff aren't chatting to their mates and ignoring waiting customers.

17 May 2009 19:01

The White Lion, Crays Pond

Re my last posting. Still an excellent pint of Greene King IPA. I did eat this time and the food was superb! Friendly service as well. Highly recommended.

10 May 2009 17:28

The Lock Tavern, Camden

Spot on munky_boy_77 and daveyfern. If a pub demands membership cards it should be treated the same way as a private members' club and be removed from this site.
What other business would turn away customers at any time, never mind during a recession.

30 Apr 2009 20:47

The Glamorgan, Croydon

Consistently well kept beer (Harveys Best, Adnams Explorer plus a guest), good food and service. The pub could be great if only it was more of a locals' pub. Unfortunately it is often overrun with arrogant, braying corporate bores from the local offices. A difficult one, as it is good to see a thriving pub; come on, local residents, make more use of this pub!

30 Apr 2009 20:42

The White Lion, Crays Pond

Outstanding, friendly pub! Well-kept Greene King IPA (yes, a good pint of this beer still tastes good!) and although I didn't eat,the food looks tempting and good value.

22 Feb 2009 20:33

The Oval Tavern, Croydon

A fine, real pub, and a bolt-hole for those who are increasingly fed up with the Glamorgan's pandering to drunken corporate bores. There are usually a couple of real ales available; the pub also has a pleasant beer garden.

14 Oct 2008 12:09

The Porter and Sorter, Croydon

This pub is deteriorating. Real ale quality and variety is dwindling. Shame, could be a good pub if the management had an interest in real ale and also served full measures.

14 Oct 2008 12:04

The Orchard, Croydon

No, Clarabel, what we need is a good MIXTURE of drinking places, some smart, and some more basic.

5 Sep 2008 16:53

Via Fossa, Canary Wharf

Another crap Canary Wharf bar. Stupid bouncers (goes with the trade, really - give someone with no brains some power and you know what happens) - overpriced drinks, poor service, music so loud you can't have a conversation.

20 Aug 2008 13:12

Bar 38, Canary Wharf

Spyker, spot on. How many other types of business would refuse a customer because of the way they are dressed? How about a campaign against dress codes?

20 Aug 2008 13:09

The Swan and Sugarloaf, South Croydon

Undrinkable beer, threatening atmosphere (even during the afternoon), clientele seems to be largely made up of local street drinkers and other dodgy characters. Shame, could be a really good pub. Avoid.

4 Aug 2008 16:45

The Glamorgan, Croydon

Croydoner, I agree to some extent that the food isn't as exciting or as high quality as when they started out, but there is no need for personal attacks e.g. paragraph 2.

3 Jul 2008 20:01

The Dolphin, Kings Cross

An interesting experience! Popped in for a quick pint (no real ale unfortunately) and met a wild and very drunk woman and her slightly more sober friend (added plus, a Tottenham supporter!)
Landlord seemed friendly enough.
For real beer, McGlynns is a better bet.

13 Apr 2008 19:08

The Glamorgan, Croydon

Beer quality still good - always Harveys BB and Adnams Bitter, plus a guest. Food also good, if a tad pricey.

The pub can get crowded with loud and sometimes badly behaved workers from local offices so it's best to visit when those people are not there.

28 Mar 2008 09:17

Henry Addington, Canary Wharf

At least the pub does show some interest in real ale - three were on last night, though not in particularly good condition. Otherwise a fairly dull, noisy, tatty pub.

15 Nov 2007 09:05

The Pitcher and Piano, Bank

No decent ale, or even interesting lagers. Anyone with taste should avoid this place and go to the multitude of proper pubs around the City.

13 Nov 2007 12:53

The Tamworth Arms, Croydon

Good to see that this pub has been saved from the developers. I have always found the beer quality to be satisfactory but there do seem to be one or two rather threatening locals who can make ths place intimidating. Friendly barstaff, though.

13 Nov 2007 12:27

The Claret Free House, Addiscombe

An excellent real ale bar, much more amenable now that the smoking ban is in place. One of the few places where Palmers' beer is normally available. Will become even more popular following the imminent demise of the Beer Circus.

13 Nov 2007 12:24

The Cricketers, Croydon

A superb, proper locals' pub. The landlord is very enthusiastic about real ale, sometimes hosting "Meet the Brewer" evenings. A must if you are in the area.

13 Nov 2007 12:19

The Oval Tavern, Croydon

A good locals' pub with an excellent live music programme. The beer quality, whilst generally OK, does drop from time to time particularly during warm weather.

13 Nov 2007 12:18

The Dog and Bull, Croydon

A great traditional pub, of which there are too few in Croydon. The Youngs is reasonably good, but have to agree with "terenced" that the quality of Youngs' beers generally has deteriorated slightly since the move to Bedfordshire.

13 Nov 2007 12:15

The Glamorgan, Croydon

Anonymous, 9 Nov: What utter rubbish. The positive comments are not from the bar staff or landlord. Ale quality is as good as ever and there are some decent guest ales. Unfortunately, the behaviour of the suits is, if anything, getting worse.

11 Nov 2007 18:43

The Glamorgan, Croydon

re Anonymous, 22 October - if you enjoyed the Brothers pear cider, you may wish to try real perry at a local beer festival.

23 Oct 2007 16:31

The Glamorgan, Croydon

FluffyRona - you are spot on! It would be good to see the red card shown to anyone who is rude to staff or other customers. Of course the owners have to run a business and make a profit but I'm sure that the locals would come back in droves if the "cavemen" were banished. Ale quality is as good as ever and the food is delicious.

22 Oct 2007 16:23

The Windmill, Croydon

There's a notice in the window advising that this pub will be closed for several weeks for refurbishment. I hope that when the refurbishment is complete it continues to serve real ale and doesn't lose its character.

10 Oct 2007 13:45

The Builders Arms, Croydon

An excellent locals' pub - many locals who have been driven out of the Glamorgan by the office workers now come here. The Fullers' beers have improved of late and there is sometimes live music on a Friday night, which is worth a punt.

10 Oct 2007 07:15

The Glamorgan, Croydon

No, I don't condone rudeness. However, don't forget the (now retired) Norman Balon of the Coach & Horses, Soho - London's rudest landlord and a tourist attraction in his own right!

8 Oct 2007 08:00

The Glamorgan, Croydon

Re "Doodso" 5 Oct - if by chance the "local office" is Bank of America, please do go elsewhere, preferably to the town centre corporate bore-bars, or the City or Canary Wharf, where you will fit in better. Don't forget that this is primarily a locals' pub and is not large enough for big office groups. I have not encountered any rudeness or poor service and the beer quality is as good as ever.

6 Oct 2007 11:11

The Glamorgan, Croydon

Re "anonymous" posting on 23 Sep 06 - totally agree with your sentiments. The opening hours are now 12-11:30 Mon-Thu; 12-12 Fri; 4-12 Sat; closed Sunday. Come on, locals...visit this pub and don't let the office workers take it over entirely!

30 Oct 2006 20:33

The Porter and Sorter, Croydon

Reasonably well-kept pint of Hogsback TEA, but otherwise an uninspiring pub. OK for watching the footie but sometimes a few of the customers seem a bit threatening.

1 Oct 2006 20:09

The Stand Up Inn, Lindfield

Superb beer quality and excellent, friendly service. All in all, one of the best pubs I have visited in a long while.

18 Sep 2006 12:07

The Townhouse, Ealing

One of the worst pubs I have ever been in (and that's saying something).
Broke my usual rule of "don't go to a pub which has bouncers" (purely in the name of research!) - wish I hadn't.
Avoid.

17 Aug 2006 17:50

Henry Addington, Canary Wharf

Why is it the grottier the pub the more stringent the dress code? This is one of the worst places in Canary Wharf. The bar staff didn't even know which real ales were on.
Inevitable loud music and no atmosphere.
Go to the Cat & Canary or the Ledger Building instead. Then you will have a better chance of avoiding a punch-up.

13 Aug 2006 19:17

The Glamorgan, Croydon

No offence intended, 'anonymous'.

It's good to see other groups such as the Croydon Backgammon Club using the pub.

13 Aug 2006 12:39

The Orchard, Croydon

Despite the sign promising a "selection of real ales" only London Pride (in relatively poor condition) is available.
Somewhat threatening atmosphere at times, especially in the public bar.

9 Aug 2006 19:16

The Glamorgan, Croydon

I cannot agree less with the post from "anonymous" below.

I have never encountered anything other than friendly service. Might it be that "anonymous" was rude or arrogant to the landlady? Quite rightly, she
stands for no nonsense.

The only problem with this pub is that it is sometimes overwhelmed by large groups of loud corporate bores from the Bank of America computer centre down the road.

The beer is well-kept as well and it is good to see Black Sheep and Harveys rather than the ubiquitous London Pride and Greene King IPA.
