The Red Lion, Bletchley

Stayed nearby and visited over the weekend. Found the four real ales well kept and i particularly liked the Otter Bright. The landlord and locals were friendly and if down this way definately worth a visit. Camra pub of the year (local branch) 2010.

The Court House Inn, Thrapston

re-visited recently to find that since our last visit the placed had closed and recently re opened. Didnt try the food. Beer ok not as much choice as last time. Seems to be struggling.

The Malt Shovel, Northampton

Called in on the May Day BH weekend and they had a mini beer fest with live music. Excellent! Beers were v. good as was the service. Def worth a visit!!

The Ship Inn, Oundle

Visited here mid May for an early evening drink with my wife. My pint of Oakham Bishops Farewell was one of the worst I have ever had! My wife asked for a simple soda water which was flat so she asked for another which was also flat! Dont bother with this place! we certainly wont.

The Crown Hotel, Downham Market

Nice bar area with real fire. Had a good pint of Abbott Ale and the other handpulls also looked good. The real fire really makes the place feel cosy. Didnt eat but the food that we saw come out looked good. Worth a visit.

The Prince Albert, Ely

Visited on a Wed afternoon at the end of March. delighted pub is open all day and staff very friendly. Beer was good with 6 real ales on so plenty of choice. Well kept they obviously know what they are doing. Yes pub is quiet no background music etc. Our only gripe is that there was no heating on. End of March, a rainy afternoon and we were sat with our coats on as were two other couples that came in. Even the bar staff had coats on! We would have stayed longer but were too cold. Com'on guys sort the heating out!

Crown Hotel, Wells next the Sea

The 'local' ale is apparently brewed by the owners wife in a micro brewery and was very nice. It is a hotel and i think the bar area and lounge lacks atmosphere as people tend to be waiting for tables etc and it appears to be void of locals but the beer was good and worth a visit to try a local brew.

The Edinburgh Inn, Wells Next The Sea

Ok lets get real about the pubs in Wells.........in my opinion the Edinburgh is the best pub in which to enjoy a pint of real ale. Woodfordes Wherry and Nelsons Revenge or Admirals Reserve are regulars and well kept. At this time of year they have a roaring log fire and a warm welcome. Happy hours on Tues and Wed @ 2.00 pint. The Globe is a glorified wine bar with prices to match. The Crown is a hotel but does have a good real ale brewed by the owners wife and worth a try but it is a hotel and the bar area lacks character and atmosphere. The Bowling Greeen does excellent food and keeps good beer but it is a dining pub not a drinking pub, as long as you know this then ok but you will be surrounded by eaters. The Fleece has the best location of any pub in Wells BUT it is far from the best pub in Wells.

The Kings Arms, Norwich

Viewed BITE before visiting and I was correct to do so. Friendly helpfull staff, good selection of real ales and a good atmosphere. Only ten minutes walk from the city centre and well worth the trek as the beers were varied and excellent. Def worth a visit.

Rose and Crown, March

Takes a bit of finding but well worth the effort. A real ale pub with staff/owners who know how to look after it and pull it!!!!!
If you are in March, save yourself the chew with the others and vist the Rose and Crown it is by far the best. (and no I dont live in the area)

The Court House Inn, Thrapston

Visited twice on consecutive nights, Thursday and a Friday. The pub has recently (Dec09) reopened with new tennants and has been fully refurbished. The building is the old police station and judges court combined. The old Court House has been tastefully converted to a dining room. There were 4 real ales on tap all from the Caledonian brewery. Tried the Autumn Red which was very nice. All the beers were well kept and in good condition. We received a friendly welcome on the first night and decided to return for a meal on the second night. we werent disappointed. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced. A 10oz Sirloin steak for under a tenner!! We will definately go back. Well worth a visit for the food and/or the beers.

The Greyhound, Milton Malsor

Visited last week and had 4 real ales on. Beer was good but expensive. Paid 3.22 for a pint of Adnams Broadside. Didnt eat so cant comment on the food. Unlike some restaurant pubs they did have a few seating areas for the drinkers.

The Old Crown, Shardlow

Visited recently on a Friday night and they had a mini beer fest on. Excellent beers well kept and a good atmosphere inside the pub. Didnt try any of the other pubs in Shardlow of which there are several but would certainly visit the Old Crown again.

The Alexandra Arms, Rugby

Great pub just off the main drag. Back room can be a bit noisy but beer is excellent and well worth a visit.

The Merchants Inn, Rugby

Excellent real ale pub in centre of Rugby. at least 8 real ales. Only problem is you find one you favour and the following day it has all gone!! you have to be quick. Great atmosphere and great pub.

Mariners Tavern, Great Yarmouth

Visited at end of August. Excellent selection of real ales. owners/staff very friendly and helpful. Best pub in Yarmouth without a doubt.

The Cask and Bottle, Leamington Spa

Visited on Sunday night. Beer good and fair selection. Yes would return but would always go for the Sommerville just around the corner.

The Voodoo Bar, Leamington Spa

Visited late on Sunday and was very quiet. Good relaxed atmosphere and god forbid I had a wine not a beer but found the service excellent. Decor has tried to capture the swinging sixties and to certain extent it has worked. Def go back.

The Benjamin Satchwell, Leamington Spa

This is one of the worst spoons I have been in. The toilets were minging with a pair of wet discarded Y fronts on the floor of the gents. Just a general feeling of lack of control and rowdiness.

9 Dec 2008 21:29

The Somerville Arms, Leamington Spa

Early evening visit and the landlord was extremely helpful. All his handpulls were on top form and he offered us tasters of each. Excellent beer! definately the best real ale pub in Leamspa. A must for a vist. We must support places that serve excellent beer and this is one!

Woolpack, Buckingham

Visited early evening and the place was empty. Staff not very helpful initially but she was coming to the end of her long shift. Modern inside but tastefully done. I had the Landlord which wasn't the best I had had but not too bad. Might be better when busier

9 Dec 2008 21:12

White Hart, Buckingham

The guy behind the bar was very good just like the bitter. Very large inside and popular with locals. Not really my type as I prefer the smaller pubs but ok.

9 Dec 2008 21:08

Mitre, Buckingham

Visited early evening on Thursday 4th Dec. Two good real fires and the staff were friendly and helpful. The beer was good and the place started filling with locals making a good atmosphere. The guy behind the bar was very good giving us testers of the handpull but he wasn't the licensee. yes we would go back

9 Dec 2008 21:04

The Fox and Hounds, Heacham

Visited last week and beer was good. Lively with locals and barstaff went out of their way to provide a container for us to have a 'beer' takeout!

18 Sep 2008 21:00

The Jolly Sailors, Brancaster Staithe

Stopped there last week on our travels. The menu looked interesting but the beer was a little disapointing in that the Brancaster bitter was cloudy. When I queried the barman was honest and said it was just a new barrel and I could change it if I wanted. We would go back.

The Crown and Mitre, Kings Lynn

Caz and I had just visited Weatherspoons just up the road and happened upon this place by accident.(thank goodness) The landlord Roger is a real character and kept us entertained all night. There was an excellent selection of real ales and with the assistance of the local railroad in delivering the beer we had a great night. If you are in KL you must visit this place! Excellent night Roger. Thanks. Trev and Caz.
