The Old Ale Emporium, Harringay

I went in there a few days ago. Nice, friendly bar staff and nice beer. But they tolerate a few loudmouth yobs who pester the other customers, and they let a woman with a toddler in who takes over a quarter of the pub. A decent pub ruined by a minority of its oaf regulars.

For the second time in a fortnight I went in for a meal, as the food is very good. The first time my meal was ruined by stupid, trendy parents letting their children run around the pub shrieking. I went in today, beforehand making sure no cretinous parents were there. As soon as my food came so did the twit parents. I left my food and drink at the bar and complained to the manager. He whined it was a family pub. I will not be going back again. If you want a quiet meal, perhaps buy a kebab and eat it on the traffic island outside.

The Duke (of York), Holborn

I went into the pub on a Sunday and found it very nice. 1930s music playing, friendly staff, nice decor, good food. It's a nice place for a Sunday lunch or to read the papers. Unfortunately it was somewhat spoilt when three families with screaming toddlers turned up, but those sort of selfish middle-class parents nowadays seem to treat pubs as cheap creches, and are ruining more and more previously good pubs.

I'm puzzled by the comments that children aren't welcome in the pub. I went in there the other day, and there were three or four children in there, and the staff were fine about it. But I've also been in there when parents have treated the place as a free creche, and made no effort to stop their children shrieking and running around, and the staff have had to have a quiet word with the selfish parents. Personally, i think it's a very friendly pub overall, with a good quiz night, and a good area out the back for smokers.
