Halfway House, Salisbury

This pub is now under the management of Gary & Natalie and about to produce its own beer brewed on the premises under the name of "Sarum Shield" Brewery. Both Gary & Natalie are very friendly and serve a variety of cask ales all of those I have supped being good.
Friendly locals, entertainment and TV on occasion. Well worth a visit.

The Crown Inn, Dilwyn

The Crown Inn has been recently taken over by the Dilwyn community and reopened in May 2012 with Gayna Taylor and partner John as licencees. A large, warm and friendly pub dating from the 17th century. Three cask ales served being Otter Bitter, Wye Valley Brewery Butty Bach and one guest, usually from a micro brewery. Food served at lunchtime and evenings.

The Carriers, Stockton

Went to this pub on 25th February with a few friends. The pub has just reopened and under the management of Laura and Graham who made us welcome. Pub comfortably full. Carriers is a Free House so look forward to seeing a choice for future visits. Ringwoods Best and Wadworths 6X available on the night and in good form.

The Compass Inn, Winsor

Visited New Years Eve, four beers on: Ringwood Best, Doombar, Fullers HSB and Flack Manor Double Drop. Drank pints of the latter two. Both perfectly good pints.
Ordered food, well cooked and presented; also arrived fairly speedily.
Service was good, both barmaid and landlady friendly as were the locals eating and drinking there.
Will be going again and recommending.

The Village, Salisbury

Since my last visit Adie Leonard, the manager, has redecorated most of the pub and has completed a refurbishment of the toilets and the basement bar.
Beers consist of Timothy Taylor Landlord and Downton Quadhop as regulars plus a further three guest beers plus a cask cider at the back of the bar. He also has other ciders and a range of lagers.
Looking up!

The Duke of York, Salisbury

This pub has just reopened. Five real ales, two real ciders and a selection of lagers. Matt the landlord is a local boy but has been running pubs in Southampton in the recent past.
The pub and its toilets are clean and freshly decorated.
Matt and the locals are friendly. Everyone is welcome.
Well worth a visit. I hope the initial promise continues.

The Barford Inn, Barford St Martin

Friendly pub in a country village a few miles west of Salisbury. Had Badger Best and Tanglefoot when I visited both very drinkable.

The Village, Salisbury

The Village has a new bar manager (Adie) who will be running the pub from now on and the landlord only working behind the bar on Fridays and Sundays. Redecoration and refurbishment are in the pipeline so hopefully there will be an improvement in the decor soon.

Safari Garden, Salisbury

Pleasant management and good beer. I haven't tried the food myself but a friend said is as excellent if a little unusual.

The Cornubia, Bristol

Cornubia now has new landlords, Jackie and Phil who have run pubs in the past and whose pub in 2004 was a local CAMRA Pub of the Year in Kent.
The CAMRA discount is still there but the price has risen to 2:50 for beers with an ABV greater than 4% which applied to five of the seven beers on tap.
Luke took most of the fittings with him (they were his) including the vinyl records but these have been replaced with Phil & Jackies own and these match quite well with the pub.
More importantly the new brewer at Hidden appears to have gone back to the old recipes as the Quest was excellent having the sweetness that it lacked three weeks ago when I last tasted it. Pint, Pleasure, Depths and possibly Spring will be on sale soon though i understand the aim is to have a mixture of local ales from the South West in addition to the Hidden range.
Hopefully the place will have a few years stability now.

The Cornubia, Bristol

I returned to this pub after nearly two years absence to find the beer in tip top condition. They now have guest ales besides the Hidden range. I particularly enjoyed the vinyl left by Luke the landlord; been years since I heard Crosby Stills Nash & Young.

Deacons, Salisbury

The phot is out of date (the sign is now blue) but the beer remains fresh.
Usually a Hopback beer or two plus a guest.

The Fox and Goose, Coombe Bisset

Visted this pub last Friday after hearing it had changed hands in the past year. A delightful pub offering a range of good food to go with the beer but I had to eat inside because of the plague of wasps in the beer garden. I had a half of Downton Brewery's Summer Slogger which was light and refreshing. Downton produce a large number of excellent seasonal ales and this was up with the best.

The Wyndham Arms, Salisbury

RogerB was confused about the cricket score?
The match was the annual "Pork Pie Cup" that was traditionally played between the Wyndham Arms and the local CAMRA branch but which went into abeyance when the latters active cricket playing membership declined below eleven. In 2008 the match was revived with the pub playing a mixture of old and new CAMRA members and their friends. As so many turned up we were able to have teams of thirteen instead of the usual eleven. The Wyndham scored 113 for 11 wickets but lost the match. This seasons match resulted in a tie of 106 runs each!.
I'm glad Roger enjoyed his tour of Salisbury (13 pubs?) and will visit us again soon.

The Rai D'Or, Salisbury

I agree with emilywu that to get a table in this pub you need to book a day or so in advance particularly mid evenings when the pub is usually full and especially later in the week when the pub is extremely busy. I have spoken to the landlord who has confirmed he is happy for drinkers to have a table if they tell him that is all they want to do and have booked so he knows who is coming and he can plan accordingly for the evening as he usually has to turn some diners away since space is limited (but never ale drinkers who can always find a spot in the bar area). Make sure your intentions are noted in the diary but it may also be politic if your group orders a starter or two to share even if you are not planning to have a full meal. Note also that he usually knows many of the customers who are mostly flexible about squeezing up or even moving to a smaller table when theyve finished eating but he wont mind if you are not one of the those people so just be honest and tell him. Hes in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for 2009 and gives a discount on the beer to CAMRA members on production of the membership card.

The Chough, Salisbury

The Hidden Brewey took over this pub a year ago and have cleaned it up, fitted new beer lines and redecorated. Dave Reed and his team are welcoming and friendly. I was allowed tasters of the beers before I chose, particularly liked the Hidden Depths stout. Good food at reasonable prices, not a gastropub as someone else had concern about.
I shall definetly keep using this place whenever I can.

The Yew Tree, Odstock

Friendly country pub serving good food and beer.

The Appletree Inn, Redlynch

This pub has been closed since a fire in 2003 destroyed most of the building. The locals have fought off a number of attempts to have the site redeveloped for housing and are looking to rebuild it themselves.

The Chough, Salisbury

The Chough has just been taken over by The Hidden Brewery. They already own three other pubs in the South of England including the Cornubia at Bristol which is playing to packed houses of beer enthusiasts.
While there is a great deal of refurbishment to do the new owners are offering a range of Hidden Beers (all good) and a limited range of bar food while the kitchens are upgraded. I'm marking high for the beer but expect it won't be too long before I can do the same for the food.

18 Dec 2007 16:58

The Cornubia, Bristol

I went to the re-opening of this pub last December and was delighted by the welcome, the people and most of all the beer. There is a lot of potential here and not just the "Hidden Potential" on sale at the bar.
