March Hare, Broughton Hackett

Rating wold be ten for the food especially the excellent carvery. However the landlord is now having a laugh with the price of the beer. It has always been above average for the West Midlands even for a country pub but since the refurbishment it has become ridiculous. Last week paid £3.75 for a good guest ale but less than 4% strength. Even Banks' Mild is well over £3 so now make one pint last with the carvery meal and move elsewhere to drink.

The Smugglers Den Inn, Newquay

Visited three times at the end of February. Excellent Suday lunchtime pint and was busy with diners with what seemed to be excellent roast dinners. Back on Monday evening for a lovely meal off the specials board- a little above average prices but restaurant quality and friendly attentive staff.
Another visit for a couple of pints on a chilly Tuesday evening after an abortive trip to The Old Albion in Crantock. Got talking to the landlord by a roaring fire- a very pleasant experience.
Would give it a ten but some people would say the food was too dear.

The Old Albion, Crantock

Have to agree with other comments. Visited at the end of February with very fond memories of holidays in yers gone by.
Didn't even stop to sample anything and moved on to the Smugglers Den the other side of Cubert. If memory serves me right this was nothing special in the 70's and 80's but is now superb.

Ye Olde Globe Inn, Berrynarbor

Always a warm welcome from staff and a very obliging landlord.Exmoor ale always spot on and a good range of guest beers that changes regularly. Good value and frehly cooked food enjoyed by our party of four on a quiet October evening. Now open all day in the summer months.

Napoleon Inn, Boscastle

Went here with some doubts having read reviews although it had been booked by a friend who goes often. A busy Friday night-it was the local food and craft festival-but no problems at all. Friendly and efficient service for drinks and food which was very good and not unreasonably priced for Cornwall holiday places. Excellent pint of HSD from the barrel. Atmosphere completed by live acoustic music in the back bar.

Butchers Arms, Woolhope

For information- I believe this pub is now closed.

The Cat Inn, Enville

What a find. A 'proper' pub in the 21st Century. Excellent Enville ale- even had a replacement pint brought to the table when they realised that the next one pulled was the end of the barrel. Good value food-try the steak and ale pie. Check opening times though before you go, closed on Mondays and Sunday hours are 12 until 5.30 with food until 3pm. Don't know who has given the low ratings but a 10 from me.

The Kilvert's Hotel, Hay on Wye

Visited on 2nd august - excellent pizza to share with side dishes such as salad, chips vegetables all at 2.50- a tad expensive but it is a hotel and at 12.95 in total for a meal for two good value

Have to agree with some of the other comments. Great place to sit outside with a drink on a summers afternoon. Bar staff (often from down under) are always friendly and helpful. However we have been refused a food order at 1.55 because 'the kitchen already have enough to do until 2.30!!'. Is this a business or what? A few years ago we booked for an evening meal as long as we could be there by 7pm. We were but our food order was not taken until about 7.20 although we were ready on arrival. The meal was excellent but we were told at 8.15 that we would have to finish our meal as the table was required for other customers. If we required a sweet we could eat it in the then smoky bar. We declined. A classic example of a brilliant pub where the owners have become complacent and now have a take it or leave it attitude as there will be other customers along to maintain the level of business. A great shame.

The Dolphin Inn, Combe Martin

Popped in for an early evening drink the first week in July. Doombar OK but have had better. Wines out of a Stowell's dispenser cabinet which is OK but like others say a bit dated. Unfortunately one of the glasses was greasy on the outside(served by an old fellow who could hardly see- so not his fault) but the landlady(?) was most un-concerned when I pointed this out. Agree that it could be a real gem of a pub with its location but needs to come out of its time warp.

The Crown Inn, Woolhope

Used to go here regularly until the long term licensees left about 3 years ago. Had varied reports since but most recent visit was OK. Range of local beers and excellent value home made faggots. Starter of one small ring of black pudding and one poached egg with a drizzle of sauce was overpriced at 4.50. Quite a restricted menu with no fish main course- they have a long way to go to catch up with the standards set by Neil and Sally who now help to run the restaurant at the Leisure Complex in nearby Fownhope.

The Black Venus, Challacombe

Our ' local' when staying at our caravan nearby. Excellent food, mostly sourced locally and a bargain pint in 'Cousin Jack' Gets very busy at weekends and in holiday season so get there at 6pm opening or leave it until after 8 if you want to eat as they do not take bookings.

The Elizabethan Inn, Luton

Used to call in here in the late 80's and early 90's on our way to Cornwall and South Hams. Must have had one of the largest pub menus in the country at that time but was excellent. Changed hands since then and menu not so big but all food is still first class. Try to go when they have one of their beer festivals. The one at the end of November featured 4 real ales form each of Devon and Cornwall at 1.90 a pint and there was a 3 course menu on offer for 14.95.

The Peterville, St Agnes

New licensees since Sept. 2007. Excellent food, plenty of local beers and friendly attentive service. Not a place for fast food, most if not all is cooked to order. Can recommend the beer battered haddock with chips and mushy peas- no dearer than my local chippy!

The Pandora Inn, Restronguet

Been here loads of times over the past 30 years when in the area-even had Sunday lunch on our 30th wedding anniversary just before Christmas 2006. Must say that we find the service good and friendly, prices for evening meals are Ok but apart from that Sunday lunch its not cheap for a lunchtime snack with ploughmans at 8.95 and Jacket potatoes over 7. Wonderful location and still enjoyed our liquid only visit last week.

The Victory Inn, St Mawes

Excellent recent lunchtime visit.Friendly with good value food. The 2 ladies in our party raved about the home made pea and basil soup and benifited from having 2 large glasses of house wine with the rest of the bottle free-have experienced this in big chain pubs but never before in what is basically a great local. Plenty of notices about other offers as well.

Jubilee Inn, Pelynt

Changed hands again middle of 2007. Now in the capable hands of Charlie and Carole formerly at the Norway Inn, Perranaworthal. Excellent food and friendly efficient service- they have quickly put their unique stamp on the place. Only negatives were problems with a smoky fire apparently caused by blow back from the kitchen fans although it was also very windy on our visit and the high price of a pint of 'Proper Job' albeit compensated by cheaper wine than elsewhere in the area.

Norway Inn, Perran ar Worthal

regular visitors here when we stay in the area. The high standards set by the previous managers Charlie and carol are being maintained. Yes its not cheap but you do expevt to pay for quality which is what you get here. Its about the only place where I have a dessert and they are pretty much the most expensive but all made on the premises and well worth it!
