Now the Bank Top Ale House with 9 cask ales available on my visit.

18 Jan 2015 08:48

The Bowling Green, Horwich

A decent traditional pub with 5 casks available and open late at weekends. Well worth a visit.

18 Jan 2015 08:47

Heroes Bar and Grill, Blackrod

A decent pint of Copper Dragon - and what seemed like a decent food menu - but the place was spoiled by kids running round the pub with nobody making any effort to stop them.

18 Jan 2015 08:44

The Tynemouth Lodge Hotel, North Shields

An excellent, friendly local with a good choice of well kept cask ales. Well worth a visit.

13 Jan 2015 22:16

The Sun Inn, Craven Arms

A friendly pub with well kept cask ales including their own Corvedale Brewery ales.

29 Dec 2014 15:01

The Ridgway Arms, Blackrod

A decent friendly pub next to the station, food-centric but well kept cask ales available too.

11 Nov 2014 09:26

The Rose and Crown, Chorley

A decent traditional pub with 4 well kept cask ales available.

11 Nov 2014 09:23

The Eagle Ale House, Clapham

A decent local pub that (as it proudly advertises) features both in and ON the 2015 Good Beer Guide! A decent selection of wekk kept cask ales available.

3 Nov 2014 09:37

The Jubilee, Norwich

A suberb, friendly local with 8 cask ales available including some very well kept Woodforde's ales. They don't serve food, but let customers bring in take-aways and even provide plates and cutlery.
Just how a local should be, highly recommended!

2 Nov 2014 07:22

The Red Lion, Norwich

Traditional pub, 6 handpumps available with 5 in use on my visit. A bit pricy but a nice pub in a decent location.

1 Nov 2014 09:36

The Castle, Norwich

A decent gay pub with two well kept Woodfordes ales available.

1 Nov 2014 09:34

The Ketts Tavern, Norwich

The House Without A Name, Bolton

A decent local pub with well kept cask ales. A very limited food menu is also available.

27 Jul 2014 12:39

The Crown Inn, Stockport

A decent traditional pub with 12 casks. Worth the walk from Stockport station.

25 Jul 2014 22:53

A decent village pub with a large seating area outside. Food very good, if a tad pricey. Two well kept cask ales available. Certainly worth a visit again.

21 Jul 2014 20:59

The Old White Horse, Ainsworth

A traditional local pub. One cask ale available (Holts).

21 Jul 2014 20:57

The Tudor Rose, Marylebone

A tudor exterior and traditional London boozer inside. I tried the Adnams Bitter which unfortunately was too warm; presumably none had been sold for ages and they'd not pulled anything through.

9 Jul 2014 10:25

The Quebec, Marble Arch

A decent, laid back gay pub with two cask ales available; the ale I tried was well kept.

8 Jul 2014 11:05

Wetherspoons, Victoria Station

If Wetherspoons launched a "Wetherspoon Metro" then this would be it! A cut down food menu with no steaks at all, for example. I tried the Doom Bar at £3.65.

8 Jul 2014 11:03

The Torch, Wembley Park

An okay pub, in an area that seems devoid of decent pubs. I called in on a quiet Sunday evening. Two casks - one London Pride plus a cider. Large smokers' paradise outside the front.

6 Jul 2014 22:01

J J Moons, Wembley

An average 'Spoons... okay pint of Doombar sampled.

6 Jul 2014 19:36

The Green Man, Wembley

Not quite sure if this place knows what it wants to be. A decent enough Sunday roast, but their website advert of "We have a large selection of lagers & real ales to suit all tastes" didn't quite live up to expectations.... three handpumps on the bar, only one had a pump clip on (Doombar) and that was off!

6 Jul 2014 19:35

The Hop, Leeds

A decent pub under the railway arches overlooking the wharf with outside seating area at the front. A very good selection of cask ales at very reasonable prices for the area. Recommended; well worth a visit.

19 May 2014 21:36

Old Salt Quay, Rotherhithe

3 cask ales available, large outside concreted area overlooking the Thames. The upstairs area and verandas were closed for some unknown reason, even though one of the bar staff told me it was open! There are better pubs overlooking the river.

27 Apr 2014 18:34

The Mayflower, Rotherhithe

Seemed a decent pub with good selection of cask ales available, but the veranda was closed for a wedding on our visit so we carried on elsewhere.

27 Apr 2014 18:28

West Five, South Ealing

Large, decent, busy gay pub with a number of rooms. Just a shame there was no decent beer on!

27 Apr 2014 18:26

The Haven Arms, Ealing

A decent and friendly pub in a quiet area just round the corner from the hustle and bustle of Ealing Broadway station. Large covered area outside. Well worth a visit.

25 Apr 2014 20:39

The Wheatsheaf, Ealing

A decent Fullers pub in a quiet area just round the corner from the hustle and bustle of Ealing Broadway station. Well worth a visit.

25 Apr 2014 20:39

Ossians, Edinburgh

Decent traditional style pub with 3 cask ales, just on the next block up from the Premier Inn. Unlike most other pubs in the area you can still get served at around midnight too.

15 Apr 2014 23:57

The Haymarket Bar, Edinburgh

A decent Nicholson pub, 12 handpumps available and even allowing for a couple of duplicates and one being off, still an impressive range. A modern refurbished interior, but done tastefully. Worth a visit and very handy for Haymarket Station.

15 Apr 2014 23:33

Ryries Bar, Edinburgh

A decent enough pub in terms of beer quality and traditional interior, but £3.80 for a Deuchars IPA (even given its location) is excessive (the Haymarket over the road sold the same beer for £3.35 on the same day).

15 Apr 2014 23:31

Platform 1, Romiley

A decent, friendly bar with a good choice of cask ales. Well worth a visit.

13 Apr 2014 18:46

Smithy Fold, Glossop

A decent Wetherspoons with good choice of ale.

13 Apr 2014 18:45

Via, Manchester

One of the better pubs/bars in the Village, on different levels with plenty of seats and alcoves. Cask ales now back on again too!

13 Apr 2014 18:43

The Wrens Nest, Glossop

Called in for breakfast this morning but the quality was poor. Had a quick look at the bar - a couple of handpumps there but neither seemed to be on.

29 Mar 2014 18:48

The Jolly Angler, Manchester

Tried to call in yesterday for a pint but told it was "members only" on matchdays (we were unconnected with the City game and just wanted a pint). I know it must be difficult for pubs near the city centre on matchdays but disappointing nevertheless. What do you have to do to become a "member" and what are you a member of? Who knows!

23 Mar 2014 19:00

The Rising Sun, Stockport

A handy pub for the station but we visited at the wrong time - only 1 of the 5 casks was available (Bombardier) as the landlady was about to leave. Be interesting to see what happens to the pub next.

23 Mar 2014 18:56

The Old Hall Inn, Whitehough

A very good pub with 6 or 7 well kept cask ales. Extensive food menu, although we didn't eat there.
Purely from a personal perspective, I'm not that keen on traditional country pubs that have been modernised inside, but nevertheless it was pleasant and welcoming and the prices weren't excessive either. Well worth a visit and the 10-15 mins walk from Chinley Station.

23 Mar 2014 18:52

Castle Inn, Bradway

A decent pub with large beer garden outside. Decent pint of Farmers Blonde. Friendly landlady who sadly is leaving in a week's time.

23 Mar 2014 18:47

The Maynard, Grindleford

Decent pint of Doombar. Busy with a wedding party when we called in, so hard to judge what it's like normally.

23 Mar 2014 18:45

Little John Hotel, Hathersage

Unfriendly and self opinionated staff. Presumably paying customers don't deserve a friendly welcome but rather rude comments. Avoid.

23 Mar 2014 18:43

Travellers Rest, Bradwell

2 casks available. Okay pub.

23 Mar 2014 18:13

The Old Hall Inn, Hope

The Gas Lamp, Manchester

A basement bar with a couple of cask ales available.

13 Mar 2014 22:48

A handy modern pub next to the tram line and Travelodge. Decent carvery and 2 or 3 well kept Lees cask ales.

1 Mar 2014 14:35

The Benjamin Huntsman, Sheffield

Decent enough Wetherspoons - most cask ales were a bit on the strong side, but Ruddles was great value at £1.85!

21 Jan 2014 23:05

The Museum, Sheffield

A modern feel pub but with a good selection of well kept cask ales - 6 available out of 7 on my visit. Worth a visit if you're in the area - just opposite the restaurants on Leopold Square.

Okay town centre pub with cask ales available.

A decent traditional inn with a cask ale available.

A large pub with a couple of cask ales, convenient for the station. Nothing special.

The Railway, Hale

Robinson's pub, Dizzy Blond was fine.

15 Dec 2013 20:42

The Bricklayers, Altrincham

Once cask ale (Pedigree) which was okay and certainly preferable to being in the nearby shops.

15 Dec 2013 20:39

The Malt Shovells, Altrincham

Decent, traditional Sam Smiths pub with Sam Smiths prices.

15 Dec 2013 20:36

Okay pub, decent Cumberland ale.

An excellent, traditional pub. 6 well kept cask ales and decent food at reasonable prices. Well worth a special visit.

3 Dec 2013 19:13

Globe, Liverpool

A small but decent traditional pub with well kept cask ales. Handy for the city centre and well worth a visit.

26 Nov 2013 09:10

The Isambard, Paddington

A surprisingly decent bar on the main concourse at Paddington. Three cask ales, the Doombar I sampled was very good. Use your BITE card to get 20% off - making a pint of Doombar very good value for the location at £3.04!

19 Nov 2013 22:17

The Brewery Tap, Leeds

A decent modern style bar just round the corner from the station. A good selection of well kept cask ales and friendly service. Recommended.

13 Nov 2013 23:20

Sportsman, Huddersfield

A decent pub with a good choice of cask ales, only a short walk from the station.

8 Nov 2013 20:36

Glasshouse, Norwich

This could be an excellent JDW pub if it were not for the seemingly mandatory minimum wait time to be served. Even late on, lots of staff - but all wandering round doing other things while customers are waiting with nobody serving. If they sorted this out it would be a great pub!

3 Sep 2013 23:59

The Adam and Eve, Norwich

Lovely little pub, well worth a detour. 5 cask ales available, the Woodforde's Sundew I tried was excellent. A bit pricy at £3.70 a pint was the only slight drawback. Food served until 7pm midweek.

3 Sep 2013 20:52

The Fat Cat, Norwich

Traditional ale house, worth a visit if you're in the area. Plenty of ales both on handpump and gravity.

3 Sep 2013 20:48

Traditional local, worth a visit on a pub crawl or if in the area.

2 Sep 2013 23:21

The Ribs of Beef, Norwich

Very good pub indeed. 9 cask ales available, pleasant location by the river. Shame they don't do food in an evening and the wifi wasn't working but that's me being a bit picky I suppose! Overall, well worth a visit, by far the best pub I've come across in that part of Norwich.

2 Sep 2013 23:19

Glasshouse, Norwich

Overall doesn't seem a bad Spoons, team leader busily chatted for ages with someone she seemed to know leaving me stood waiting to be served, but the beer was good and a decent pub inside.

2 Sep 2013 23:17

The Birdcage, Norwich

Handy pub in the city centre, a couple of cask ales available on my visit - the TT Landlord was well kept. Good to be able to buy fish and chips at the great chippy over the road (Grosvenor hish bar) and take them in to eat with a pint - something the chippy and pub both encourage!

2 Sep 2013 19:16

Molly Moggs, Soho

Called in Sunday evening, two handpumps but no cask ales on... so surprisingly we went somewhere that did!

2 Sep 2013 00:50

The Lamb Brewery, Chiswick

Average place, decent cask ales, food okay, nothing special.

1 Sep 2013 15:37

The Jolly Carter, Little Lever

A decent pub, improved since the change of ownership. Pity there's only one cask ale (Bank Top Flat Cap).

Smugglers Den, Morecambe

Closed at around 2.30pm on a summer Sunday afternoon...

Decent selection of 8 cask ales, seemingly one of the only decent pubs in Morecambe.

26 Aug 2013 11:30

Turks Head Hotel, Tynemouth

A decent pub with well kept ales.

15 Aug 2013 08:45

15 Aug 2013 08:38

The Pot Still, Glasgow

23 Jul 2013 14:06

The Black Eagle, Hockley

An excellent local with 6 cask ales and decent, traditional pub food, both at reasonable prices. An unspoilt interior round the bar in the different rooms helps the homely and friendly feel.
I was staying in the city centre but really pleased I made the short and easy journey to the Black Eagle. 5 mins on the tram from Snow Hill to Soho Benson Road, then a less than 300m walk to the pub.
Highly recommended - surely the best pub in the Birmingham area?

25 Jun 2013 20:12

The Wellington, Birmingham

A decent pub, in spite of the downstairs bar being closed for refurbishment (I thought it was shut at first!) there were loads of apology notices and the upstairs and outside bar open. Well worth a visit - sure it will be superb when finished.

24 Jun 2013 22:48

The Briar Rose, Birmingham

Decent 'Spoons with enough staff on too - not always the case! Fair selection of cask ales.

24 Jun 2013 22:46

The King and Castle, Kidderminster

An okay place, handy of course for both Kidderminster stations. However if you're travelling on the SVR then I much prefer the Railwayman's Arms at Bridgnorth, which has a far better atmosphere and is about 60p per pint cheaper for some reason!

24 Jun 2013 21:49

The Railwaymans Arms, Bridgnorth

A great pub, surely the gem of the SVR! About 8 cask ales available, prompt and friendly service and a decent traditional atmosphere. The ale I tried was excellent value for money too at £2.25 - this pub is far nicer and cheaper than the pub on Kidderminster SVR station!

24 Jun 2013 21:47

The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham

A decent Fullers pub in a nice setting overlooking the Anglican Cathedral. However it is very expensive, a pint of 3.9% cask ale setting me back £3.80!

24 Jun 2013 21:44

The Lord Wolseley, Islington

A decent, bustling pub in spite of its location tucked away on a side street behind the Jury's Hotel. Decent choice of cask ales, worth a visit.

6 Jun 2013 22:14

Ostrich Inn, South Creake

Decent, traditional food with good food at reasonable prices. Wherry on cask, the guest was not on when I called in. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

29 May 2013 15:57

The Ark Royal, Wells next the Sea

Worse today than I remembered from 4 years ago! Wherry went off, so apart from Abbott (a bit strong for a lunchtime session) just keg left. Food simple and still overpriced.

28 May 2013 14:23

The Hansom Cab, Lytham St Annes

Now the Railway Hotel, a Wetherspoons... and a very good JDW at that. Friendly and efficient staff, decent ale choice, good standard Spoons food menu and an outside seating area at the front. Worth a visit.

22 May 2013 08:26

Red Lion, Over Hulton

A large Fayre and Square chain pub/restaurant with extensive food menu and various deals. The food was good and the pub well furnished inside.
The one cask bitter was not right sadly, but I've only been once so will put it down to a one-off - they claim Cask Marque accreditation.

15 May 2013 12:43

The Hulton Arms, Over Hulton

Seems to be under new management. They have banners outside advertising a carvery but the kitchen was well and truly closed when we called in. Luckily we'd eaten at the Red Lion over the road. Three cask ales available which were kept fine.

15 May 2013 12:39

The Dog and Partridge, Rochdale

Called in on a Saturday afternoon and we were the only customers in! No cask ales and around £3 for a pint of keg Smiths. There are FAR better pubs in the area (eg the Cemetery).

12 May 2013 20:30

The Cemetery Hotel, Rochdale

An excellent traditional pub. 6 cask ales available and decent home cooked bar food which was great value for money. Well worth a special visit.

The Queen Elizabeth Hotel, Bolton

Local boozer, no cask ales at all.

18 Apr 2013 01:01

The Devonshire Arms, Blackpool

Largish pub, didn't try the food. Thwaites Bitter and Wainwright on cask, the Wainwright was just about okay but far from the best pint of it.

17 Apr 2013 16:00

The Crown and Anchor, Manchester

A handy pub somewhat hidden a little off the beaten track, but only a short walk from Piccadilly Station or Piccadilly Gardens. While not a traditional interior, it's a friendly pub. 4 cask ales available, some were decent although one was a bit warm, presumably stood in the line a while.
Worth a visit.

10 Apr 2013 18:11

The Unicorn, Manchester

Traditional pub, four cask ales available. Worth a visit if you're in the area.

10 Apr 2013 18:05

Herdwick Inn, Penruddock

A friendly Jennings pub with well kept cask Cumberland and good food. Recommended.

A decent country pub with well kept Jennings ales and plenty of seating in the beer garden.

6 Apr 2013 20:58

Dog and Gun, Keswick

Bustling town centre pub, well kept ales, definitely worth a visit.

6 Apr 2013 20:56

Gloucester Arms Hotel, Penrith

A traditional style pub with dark wooden panelling and an open fire. Cask ales were decent. The kitchen was closed for some reason on our visit.

6 Apr 2013 09:58

General Wolfe, Penrith

A decent Thwaites pub. Well kept Wainwright and decent food specials - on a Friday night, we went for the 16oz ramp with sides that you can help yourself too. Worth a visit.

6 Apr 2013 09:56

Lowther Arms, Penrith

A friendly locals pub, well kept cask ales.

6 Apr 2013 09:55

Walters Bar, Hull

Superb! It advertises up to 23 ales outside and the trading standards people won't be able to criticise! 17 cask ale handpumps (15 of which were on) plus a further 6 real cider pumps. I called in late on and wished I'd come here first! Highly recommended for any cask ale fan. It's not often I give 9/10!

25 Mar 2013 22:18

Ye Olde Black Boy, Hull

Pub with traditional rooms (smoke room at the front with a serving hatch bar etc) and a range of cask ales - the XB I sampled was decent. Certainly worth a visit.

25 Mar 2013 21:36

Ye Olde White Harte, Hull

By far one of the best pubs in Hull. Traditional and historic interior combined with a good selection of well kept ales. The friendly barman proactively topped pints up which was good too see too. Well worth a visit.

25 Mar 2013 21:04

Pi, Chorlton

As its name suggests, popular for pies and more of an eating place, but also served a decent pint.

24 Mar 2013 08:12

The Marble Beer House, Chorlton cum Hardy

Decent modern style ale house, pretty busy on our Saturday mid-afternoon visit.

24 Mar 2013 08:11

Sedge Lynn, Chorlton Cum Hardy

Average Wetherspoons - handy for food as usual!

24 Mar 2013 08:10

The Horse and Jockey, Chorlton cum Hardy

A decent, busy pub tucked away in a residential area. I'd imaging it would get extremely busy outside in summer. Well kept ales, we didn't try the food although plenty of people were eating.

24 Mar 2013 08:09

The Spread Eagle, Chorlton cum Hardy

Large Holts boozer, decent cask ales but no food seemed to be served, which was a surprise for a pub that size.

24 Mar 2013 08:07

The Lloyds Hotel, Chorlton cum Hardy

A large Lees pub with a pleasant conservatory at the back overlooking the bowling green. Couple of decent cask ales. We had considered eating there, but the food menu was very limited so we ate elsewhere.

24 Mar 2013 08:05

Electrik, Chorlton cum Hardy

Cosmopolitan style cafe/bar - our early afternoon visit saw a mix of families eating, people calling in for a coffee and those there for a pint. Decent selection of cask ales available, we tried the Wainwright which was very palatable.

24 Mar 2013 08:04

The Crown and Kettle, Ancoats

Decent pub with generally traditional interior.

21 Mar 2013 19:00

The Castle Hotel, Manchester

Traditional pub with a decent sized room at the back behind the bar as well.

21 Mar 2013 18:57

Went for the first time, a good evening's night out at a comedy club. No cask ales, but apart from that highly recommended!

3 Mar 2013 08:21

The Rose and Crown, Bury

Sadly, the Rose has deteriorated heavily since Val passed away. Called in one evening last week to find NO cask ales on at all. Not surprisingly we went elsewhere.

22 Feb 2013 17:41

The Maltings, York

Now extended (towards the river) giving much-needed capacity in a tasteful way. Still a decent pub - well worth a visit.

7 Feb 2013 21:47

Old Hunters Inn, Stalybridge

A great, traditional pub with well kept ales. Well worth a visit!

3 Feb 2013 15:21

The Millpond, Stalybridge

Sadly, not my best experience. One one ale available, which was too strong for a session. The most annoying thing however was a child running round and screaming, with nobody (parents or staff) making any effort to stop. Moved on hurriedly elsewhere!

3 Feb 2013 15:19

Society Rooms, Stalybridge

Not a bad 'Spoons - good choice of ales with decent food and service. Doesn't attract the best clientele, but that's not the pub's fault!

3 Feb 2013 15:14

Lyndon House Hotel, Walsall

A pleasant, friendly local with well kept ales. Wifi a very handy bonus too. Well worth a visit, highly recommended!

15 Jan 2013 22:34

Excellent pub with 16 handpumps, 15 of which were on and the other being changed! Well worth a visit.

15 Jan 2013 22:32

Imperial, Walsall

Fairly big Spoons with a very pleasant interior. Quiet on the Tuesday I called in for the Steak Night. Beer fine.

15 Jan 2013 20:07

White Lion, Walsall

A decent local with 4 well kept cask ales and a friendly landlady. It's only a 15 minute or so walk from the Park Inn, by Bescot Stadium station, where I was staying. Worth a visit if you are doing likewise!

15 Jan 2013 16:38

The Railway, Ramsbottom

Much improved now under the current management, although I've not eaten there.

7 Jan 2013 23:06

The Royal Oak, Ramsbottom

Thwaites pub now called the Oaks after its refurbishment. Decent pint of Wainwright.

7 Jan 2013 23:04

The Shakespeare Inn, Kendal

Beer selection okay, but seemed a little cliquey with a group of people round the bar and nobody else in.

7 Nov 2012 21:53

Black Swan Hotel, Kendal

Was very quiet when we called in on a Tuesday evening, the two of us almost doubled the patronage! Beer okay.

7 Nov 2012 21:51

The Riflemans Arms, Kendal

A friendly pub with decent enough beer.

7 Nov 2012 21:49

The Miles Thompson, Kendal

A big 'Spoons but somewhat unusual. Despite a long bar, and sign on it telling people to use its full length, people formed a checkout-style queue at the till in the middle!
The free wifi doesn't reach the big upstairs seating area.
Beer and food okay.

7 Nov 2012 21:48

Alexanders (The Castle Green Hotel), Kendal

Very food-centric, but decent cask ales on offer. If you're staying in the adjacent hotel it's very handy.

7 Nov 2012 21:44

Hawkshead Brewery Beer Hall, Staveley

Full choice of Hawkshead ales, as you'd expect. For a modern building, done in a tasteful way. Worth a visit if you're in the area.

7 Nov 2012 21:42

The Duke William, Staveley

A clean and tidy pub with decent cask ales. Helpfully located between the Eagle and Child and Hawkshead brewery tap.

7 Nov 2012 21:41

Eagle and Child Inn, Staveley

A great pub, well worth its acclaim in many beer and pub guides! Well kept cask ales at reasonable prices and decent food on the lunch 5 menu. Well worth a special visit.

7 Nov 2012 21:39

Wetherspoons, Leeds

A busy 'Spoons on Leeds Station. No particular complaints.

28 Oct 2012 19:14

The Commercial Hotel, Slaithwaite

Decent ales at excellent prices, not too keen on the open plan layout but you can't have everything I suppose!

28 Oct 2012 19:09

The Riverhead Brewery Tap, Marsden

Good beer and service, great selection of cask ales. Well worth a visit.

28 Oct 2012 19:07

The Railway Hotel, Greenfield

A decent pub across the road from the station. We started our rail ale trail here and it set us off on a good footing. 6 cask ales available, no complaints.

28 Oct 2012 19:05

The Witness Box, City of London

Downstairs bar tucked away on a quiet corner off the hustle of Fleet Street. Selection of reasonable cask ales.

14 Sep 2012 11:05

The Witness Box, City of London

Downstairs bar tucked away on a quiet corner off the hustle of Fleet Street. Selection of reasonable cask ales.

14 Sep 2012 11:04

The Harrow, City Of London

Okay pub on a quiet back street from the hustle of Fleet Street etc. London Pride and Seafarer's cask ales available.

13 Sep 2012 21:35

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

A decent, traditional pub just over the road from Blackfriars station. My first impressions weren't good as they'd run out of cask ales (apart from a 5.7% caramel ale) apparently due to the Olympics stuff (which I'm glad are over!)
Today's visit was far better however with a decent choice of ales and good food at reasonable prices. Due to the location it gets very busy but also has a seating area outside by the main roads. Certainly worth a visit, if only to see the historic interior!

13 Sep 2012 21:32

The Knights Templar, Chancery Lane

A good 'Spoons - good choice of ales with prompt, friendly and efficient service. Atracts a very varied crowd with people from all walks of life.

12 Sep 2012 21:49

The Crooked Billet, Leigh on Sea

Good selection of cask ales - the Doombar I tried was very pleasant. Decent food too at sensible prices. Pleasant location overlooking the river with a large outside seating area. Only 5-10 mins walk from the station too. Recommended!

12 Sep 2012 19:43

The Volunteer Arms, Southport

Well kept Thwaites ales but, as said by others, a somewhat uninspiring pub. Only a couple of minutes for the station so handy for a quick pint.

8 Sep 2012 13:34

Baron's Bar, Southport

Decent choice of cask ales at reasonable prices. Quite dark inside but plenty of seating.

8 Sep 2012 13:31

Brewery Tap, Bolton

Decent traditional pub with around 9 Bank Top cask ales available. Furnishings a tad plain but pleasant nevertheless. Well worth a visit - by far the best pub in the area!

8 Sep 2012 13:27

The Golden Fleece, Tremadog

Decent food and ales.

13 Aug 2012 19:13

The Retro Bar, Manchester

Bit of a spit and sawdust type place but a couple of cask ales now available. Cheap food at lunchtime.

9 Aug 2012 19:14

Joshua Brooks, Manchester

Decent selection of cask ales. Worth a visit.

9 Aug 2012 19:13

The Bluebell, Bury

Large, decent Holts pub with a restaurant area.

29 Jul 2012 21:12

Sheaf of Wheat, St Ives

A little off the normal tourist route; ok cask ales and food served.

12 Jul 2012 10:52

Lifeboat Inn, St Ives

Large pub with 4 well kept cask ales. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable.

12 Jul 2012 10:50

The First and Last, Penzance

A decent, traditional pub with pleasant staff and well kept cask ales - well worth a visit.

10 Jul 2012 22:19

The Dolphin, Penzance

Decent pub with a nice traditional interior although very food-centred... not the type of place you'd just call in to for a pint. Good pint of Tribute, though, to wash the food down!

10 Jul 2012 22:15

The One and All Inn, Penzance

As previously mentioned, now the "One and All" - decent pint of Tribute.

10 Jul 2012 22:12

The Longboat Hotel, Penzance

Not a bad pub, handy for the station and up with the times (unlike many in the area) offering free WIFI. Good pint of Tribute plus other cask ales available. Didn't try the food.

10 Jul 2012 22:09

The Turks Head, Penzance

A pub wannabe restaurant. Decent cask ales, the food (after having been sent back twice for not being what I ordered) was good.

10 Jul 2012 22:06

The Shoulder Of Mutton, Holcombe

Decent pint from a selection of about 4 cask ales. Didn't eat there - seems to be fairly expensive restaurant-type prices (eg rump steak 14.95).

8 Jul 2012 09:25

The Royal Oak Hotel, Didsbury

Seemed a friendly enough local, decent beer.

6 Jul 2012 13:13

The Didsbury Inn, Didsbury

Good choice of cask ales and decent location with plenty of outdoor seating. Didn't try the food (ate next door).

6 Jul 2012 13:12

Ye Olde Cock Inn, Didsbury

Decent pub with a selection of cask ales and good food.

6 Jul 2012 13:10

Horse Shoe, Radcliffe

Beer prices a bit steep at 3.30 for Wainwright though...

2 Jul 2012 19:22

The Spread Eagle, Kearsley

No cask ale, nothing to entice me in.

28 Jun 2012 07:58

The Unity Brook Inn, Kearsley

Called in one evening, no cask ale, hardly anyone in, not much atmosphere.

28 Jun 2012 07:52

Red Lion, Doncaster

In many ways, not a bad 'Spoons... although they close the bar without any notice (even though nearly every other pub in the country rings a bell or at least tells paying customers) so if you happen to then arrive at the bar for (another) drink 2 minues after the designated time - due to lack of knowledge as they've not told you - it's tough luck! Customer service excellence! At least the staff get to finish early though...
If you put that aside it's okay.

27 Jun 2012 23:38

The Salutation, Doncaster

A very good pub with good food at very reasonable prices plus a good choice of cask ales - 6 available on my visit. Well worth a visit.
My only suggestion for improvement is that it keeps up with the times, eg by offering WIFI and accepting card payment for food - both of which would have been really useful for me, while in Doncaster on a business stay.
That said, still a really good pub with pleasant and helpful staff.

27 Jun 2012 20:20

The Black Horse, Kearsley

The best pub in the area. Two cask ales available and what seems to be a decent food menu.

27 Jun 2012 08:19

The Archibald Knox, Onchan

Fairly modern pub/restaurant with friendly bar staff. Okells cask ale was well kept and the food good. The mixed grill had good cuts of meat, although you do pay for it at 18.50!
If you're looking for pub food with a decent pint, this is worth a visit, especially being away from the main tourist drag.

13 Jun 2012 13:11

The Albert Hotel, Douglas

Very much a back street local boozer, although the beer was good.

13 Jun 2012 13:08

The Queens Hotel, Laxey

Decent pub, more frequented by locals as it's a (very) short walk up from the electric railway station. Decent cask ales, pleasant people, well worth a small detour!

11 Jun 2012 23:06

The Railway Inn, Union Mills

A decent pub only a few minutes on the bus from Douglas with well kept ales. No evidence of them serving food on my visit, which was the only pity. Well worth a visit though!

10 Jun 2012 21:57

The Black Lion Hotel, Little Walsingham

Can't understand comments about high prices as the Black Lion is the cheaper pub in the village (and was last time I visited too!) Local ales now feature too, along with very good food. Well worth a visit.
Outdoor seating not only at the front but in a courtyard at the back too.

5 Jun 2012 00:08

The Eagle and Child, Whitefield

Decent pub with a good pint of Holts and lots of outdoor seating and a bowling green at the back. Recommended.

27 May 2012 11:59

The Same Yet Inn, Preswich

A decent pub in a pleasant location - great views from the beer garden at the back. Lees isn't usually a beer I'd choose, but the Same Yet serves the best pint of Lees I've had. At first we had an issue about being able to order food, but the landlord was excellent and we'll certainly be back!

27 May 2012 11:56

The Yorkshire Hussar, York

Now reopened as a gay pub - cask ales available including a well kept Golden Pippin.

16 May 2012 07:55

The Corner Pin, York

Three cask ales, could have been a decent pub but (without warning) they decided to close an hour early due to being "too quiet"! After all, a pub's there for the convenience of the staff rather than the customers, isn't it?
A trip round the corner to the Maltings found a full pub with every seat taken at exactly the same time as the Corner Pin had closed early due to being too quiet... I wonder why?!

16 May 2012 07:53

The Cask Inn, Scarborough

A decent, traditional pub, well worth a visit - just far enough from the town centre! A good choice of cask ales, the Deuchars IPA I drank was well kept.

26 Apr 2012 00:20

The Centurion, Newcastle

Quite good for a station bar with a lovely interior (apart from the naff little balcony over the external door to house a DJ or something). Three or four cask ales, the one I sampled was well kept.

25 Apr 2012 16:14

The Robin Hood, Tottington

One cask ale - Greene King IPA.

22 Apr 2012 16:44

The Malt Shovel, Northampton

Decent traditional pub with a good choice of cask ales. Very busy on my Wednesday evening visit due to a live band being on.

19 Apr 2012 16:58

The Rams Head, Disley

A large chain pub with a decent food menu and three cask ales available. Extensive seating at the back too. Just at the top of Disley Station approach.

15 Apr 2012 08:16

The Pack Horse Inn, New Mills

An excellent country pub with cask ales and what looks like an excellent food menu in a lovely rural location. Great accomodation too - well worth a visit. About a mile from New Mills Central station, with good exercise provided by the steep hill!

15 Apr 2012 08:14

The Sweet Green Tavern, Bolton

Nowhere near as good as it used to be, which is a great shame. Now only has a very limited choice of ales which were average at best.

25 Mar 2012 09:45

The William Wilberforce, Hull

Very limited choice of ales, 3 available of which 2 were the usual Abbot and Ruddles.

13 Mar 2012 15:44

Three John Scotts, Hull

Not a bad Spoons, reasonable choice of ales on my visit, food to usual Spoons standard. Probably the best of the 3 JDWs in Hull.

13 Mar 2012 15:42

The Star Tavern, Belgravia

Good, tucked away pub. Good wholesome pub food at reasonable prices for the area served until 9pm.

10 Mar 2012 16:31

The Farmers Arms, Bolton

Since it reopened a year or so ago, this pub offers good pub food and about three cask ales at reasonable prices.

2 Mar 2012 17:44

The Ducie Bridge, Manchester

Not a bad pub, 2 cask ales - Holts plus one other. Only a couple of minutes from Victoria Station, but heading away from the city centre.

22 Jan 2012 20:20

The Station Hotel, Clitheroe

Well worth a visit, three cask Thwaites ales available. The refurbishment has fortunately been done more tastefully than many. Didn't try the food although the menu looked good.

3 Jan 2012 07:29

The New Inn, Clitheroe

Excellent choice of (I think) 11 cask ales. Worth a visit.

3 Jan 2012 07:27

The Swan Hotel, Whalley

Cask ales ok. Already eaten over the road so we didn't try the food. The refurb made the interior feel somewhat soulless.

3 Jan 2012 07:27

The Dog Inn, Whalley

A decent choice of cask ales in a traditional style pub, the food was good too. Apart from somewhat chaotic bar service this pub is highly recommended.

3 Jan 2012 07:25

The Knott Bar, Deansgate

Decent choice of ales, and a decent (albeit limited) food menu which, fairly unusually for Manchester city centre pubs, is served until 8pm. Just across the road from Deansgate station.

31 Dec 2011 20:46

The Briton's Protection Hotel, Castlefield

Lovely traditional Victorian interior, good choice of cask ales, always seems busy. Only a short walk from Oxford Road or Deansgate stations.

31 Dec 2011 20:43

The Queen Anne Hotel, Little Lever

Decent traditional pub with well kept Thwaites ales. Just changed management. Worth a visit.

29 Dec 2011 18:32

The Stopes Tavern, Little Lever

Friendly pub, well kept Bank Top Flat Cap at reasonable prices. Worth a visit.

29 Dec 2011 18:31

The Red Bridge Tavern, Ainsworth

Now boarded up, presumably the nail in its coffin was the closure of the road outside for months on end to do with laying a new sewer.

25 Dec 2011 17:24

Railway Hotel, Preston

Handy pub for the station. Cask ales at reasonable prices.

17 Dec 2011 22:59

The Railway, Ramsbottom

Not been in here for a long time - how a pub can decline! Several broken windows not repaired. One room looks more like a back street cafe with plastic tablecloths. The 'refurb' of the bar is horrendous, completely ruining the atmosphere of the pub. Six handpumps but none in use despite a Spitfire pump clip being on - the best they could muster was a bottle of Spitfire!
Avoid - I certainly will be while the pub is under its current management. There are far better pubs nearby.

12 Dec 2011 10:13

First Chop, Ramsbottom

Small but decent place with a good choice of nwell kept cask ales. Not tried the food. Worth a visit in Ramsbottom!

12 Dec 2011 10:10

The Furness Railway, Barrow In Furness

Average 'Spoons.

7 Dec 2011 21:21

New Inn, Radcliffe

A decent pub, called in for the first time yesterday. 3 cask ales available.

14 Nov 2011 18:04

Grapes, Appleby

Small quiet place, says Jennings outside but the one cask available on my visit was Ringwoods. Clean and well kept.

5 Nov 2011 18:40

The Masons Arms, Gargrave

Traditional pub, three cask ales.

5 Nov 2011 09:30

The Bears Head, Sandbach

Traditional coaching inn with oak beams etc located on the A50. Seems mainly centred around food (I'd already eaten). Two cask ales available, the Doom Bar I sampled was okay but quite expensive at 3.30 a pint.

7 Oct 2011 08:19

The Old Red Lion, Holmes Chapel

Ember Inns chain pub - three cask ales available (the one I tried was well kept) plus a reasonable food menu.
From my perspective, the "no under 14s" policy is welcomed as too often, chain pubs serving food are spoilt by kids running rampant.

6 Oct 2011 13:02

The Dog Inn, Over Peover

Excellent, friendly and traditional pub. Very good food and well kept ales. Definitely worth a visit!

4 Oct 2011 00:49

The Horseshoe Bar, Glasgow

Very traditional pub with a variety of cask ales at reasonable prices. Handy for Central Station and well worth a visit.

19 Sep 2011 21:29

Crystal Palace, Glasgow

Large open plan Spoons - there is a room upstairs too although it was closed for a function when I visited. Average Spoons pub.

19 Sep 2011 20:34

The Hinckley Knight, Hinckley

Already eaten but called in for a pint - 3 casks of which 1 (Landlord) was available, reasonably priced too. Other than that a fairly typical Flaming Grill chain pub on the A5 almost next to J1 of the M69.

14 Sep 2011 20:57

Blue Pig, Wolvey

Excellent pub all round. Apparently dates back to the 15th century, certainly a traditional and unspoilt oak-beamed interior. Excellent food (we had the mixed grill - highly recommended) and 5 cask ales, 2 of which are guests. Well worth a visit.

14 Sep 2011 20:53

The Carpenters Arms, Wighton

Notices now state that the pub is closed pending a structural survey.

13 Sep 2011 15:16

The Three Horseshoes, Warham

A nice old fashioned pub although still worrying how quiet it is. Possibly needs to step its game up to draw more people in (keeping the historic interior and feel) perhaps by better advertising, accepting card payments for food etc... there's a difference between keeping a traditional style and being stuck in a time warp!
I hope it does succeed as I'd hate to see it be another closed village pub.

13 Sep 2011 15:16

The Black Lion Hotel, Little Walsingham

Now reopened and much improved. Accomodation very reasonable and a couple of well kept cask ales available at reasonable prices for the area (just a shame they aren't local ales such as Wherry!)
Worth a visit.

12 Sep 2011 18:30

Shakespeare Hotel, Sheffield

Decent selection of cask ales. A bit of a traditional "spit and sawdust" type pub with live music and popular with heavy metal types.

27 Aug 2011 13:52

The Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield

Excellent pub with 12 cask ales available and pleasant lounge. Received many CAMRA awards. Traditional bar snacks available at lunchtime. Well worth a visit.

27 Aug 2011 13:50

The Fat Cat, Sheffield

Ok to call in and a good choice of ales.

27 Aug 2011 13:49

Harlequin, Sheffield

Very good pub with decent staff and a wide selection of cask ales. Worth a visit.

27 Aug 2011 13:48

The Bankers Draft, Sheffield

Typical Spoons although you have to fight your way through the smokers who seem to think the doorway's there for their sole benefit to get in or out.

27 Aug 2011 13:47

The Rutland Arms, Sheffield

A decent and popular pub with well kept ales. It was that full that we sat upstairs, which was a shame as that room is tired and grubby and lets the rest of the pub down.

27 Aug 2011 13:45

Roebuck Tavern, Sheffield

A good pub with 3 decent cask ales and a good food menu at reasonable prices. Worth visiting for food in the evening.

27 Aug 2011 13:43

Red Lion, Sheffield

Decent pub, well kept cask ales.

27 Aug 2011 13:42

Sheffield Tap, Sheffield

Decent pub on the station with a wide range of cask ales available. Very spacious with (I think) 3 large rooms. Worth a visit.

27 Aug 2011 13:41

The Postern Gate, York

Ok Spoons, although unusually we had to take a beer back (and wait the usual near-eternity at the bar a second time).

27 Aug 2011 13:40

The Red Lion, York

Decent place, the staff clearly care about their ales as we were offered a taster of one. Worth a visit.

27 Aug 2011 13:36

The Judges Lodgings, York

A decent place to sit outside, well kept cask ales.

27 Aug 2011 13:32

The Hope and Anchor, Hammersmith

Big shame no cask ales on. I and three mates (all gay) called in yesterday but went elsewhere purely due to the lack of ales. A shame, would have liked to stay.

31 Jul 2011 15:13

The Blue Anchor, Hammersmith

Very nice pub with panneled walls etc inside and an idylic location overlooking the river. Well kept ales, not too expensive taking into account the location and quality (3.60 cask ales). I didn't eat there but the food seemed popular too.
Well worth a visit.

31 Jul 2011 15:06

The Roebuck, Hampstead

Okay pub with outdoor seating, nothing special.

30 Jul 2011 10:15

The King William IV, Hampstead

The best thing about this pub is the food, which was excellent by pub standards. However not sure what the pub wants to be. If a restaurant-pub, the service wasn't there (children lean over your plate to pick up empty glasses etc). If a pub, the three cask ales need more attention as they were all too warm for my liking and none good enough to have a second pint. They attempted to charge me 52 for a 41 bill before I queried it, which was corrected with no apology (why would a customer expect an apology for them attempting to overcharge me by 10?!) etc.

Needs to sort out its identity crisis then fix the details... could then be a really good pub!

30 Jul 2011 10:13

The Beaten Docket, Cricklewood

A decent sized Spoons with quick and friendly service so better than most JDWs in that regard. The 4 cask ales available weren't JDW's most inspiring range, however.

28 Jul 2011 13:51

Wetherspoons, Hampstead

One of JDW's worst. Went in on a Wednesday evening and waited that long to be served I eventually gave up and went elsewhere. They had 4 staff on but the bar was heaving so needed 6. Pub very dark inside too.

28 Jul 2011 13:49

The Railway, West Hampstead

Chain pub by West Hampstead station, evening deal days are remarkably similar to Wetherspoons'! Three cask ales. Okay but nothing special (what is round here?)

28 Jul 2011 13:47

Sir Michael Balcon, Ealing

A fairly small pub by JDW standards but well kept ales and decent food.

26 Jul 2011 18:34

The Mark Addy, Salford

Well worth a visit; cask ales very good and the staff seem to genuinely care (not many city centre pubs offer a taster!) Extremely pleasant location too next to the river; well worth the short walk from the city centre and also very handy for Salford Central station.
I've not eaten here; the food is clearly targeted at the restaurant clientele rather than pub food market.

15 Jul 2011 19:45

The Sawyers Arms, Deansgate

Three cask ales on, the two which we tried were good.

Also useful to find a city centre pub other than JDW serving food in the evening (most don't bother after they've cashed in on the lunchtime market). However the food took ages to arrive and was far from brilliant, even basic things were wrong like "Steak and eggs" advertised on the menu as with 2 eggs arrives with only one; the staff arranged for another to be provided but I'd almost finished before it arrived. A shame; had the food been good I've had made this a regular place to start an evening out.

15 Jul 2011 19:41

Ainsworth Arms, Radcliffe

Called in yesterday for the first time in ages - they've now started doing a carvery at weekends which is good value at 5.95. Three cask ales available from small breweries which were okay.

I never feel drawn back to the pub however as the service is always lacklustre. There are always quite a few staff around but it comes across as though they just get round to the customers as and when; quite often the bar is completely unstaffed and you stand there twiddling your thumbs waiting for someone to appear! Plates etc are collected after eating without even the normal courtesy of asking if the meal was okay.

A shame; given a change in culture back to the most important people (customers) this pub would be really good and people would go back regularly.

10 Jul 2011 19:22

The Library Bar, St Peter Port

No cask ales, but they do an excellent value carvery!

30 Jun 2011 22:53

Cornerstone Cafe Bar, St Peter Port

Excellent value food with good portions at reasonable prices plus some well kept cask ales. Worth a short walk from the town centre, can be combined with a visit to the Cock and Bull next door too!

30 Jun 2011 22:10

The Cock and Bull, St Peter Port

A decent pub just a couple of minutes walk from the town centre. 5 well kept ales available - possibly the best selection on the island? Worth a visit, can also be combined with a visit next door!

30 Jun 2011 22:08

The White Lion, Bury

Now has a cask ale available again, which is a guest ale so varies. I've made a point of going in quite often since and have always found it to be a well kept session ale. A nice traditional pub interior too. Now well worth a visit again, probably one of the better pubs in Bury town centre!

16 Jun 2011 18:37

The Dragonfly, Bolton

Now Dragonfly instead of Barracuda, part of a Smith and Jones chain I think. 4 or 5 cask ales available and food.

25 May 2011 19:04

The Oyster Rooms, Fulham

A decent Lloyds No 1 (JDW) bar in a handy location in the shopping centre above Fulham Broadway tube station. 5 or 6 cask ales available but not tried any (for once!)

18 May 2011 18:57

The Major Hotel, Ramsbottom

A decent pub, 4 cask ales - tried Copper Dragon's Pippin which was well kept. Worth a visit if you're in the area - far better than some others nearby.

14 May 2011 22:04

The Lost Dene, Deansgate

Initial impressions seemed good, with around 4 cask ales available and a good value but basic food menu available. However, the food taking 45 minutes to arrive (for simple choices - one fish and chips and one pie and chips) somewhat puts me off a further visit.

13 May 2011 18:46

The Kings Arms, Salford

Not a bad place to call into between other nearby pubs (like the New Oxford) and Manchester city centre. A decent selection of real ales available. Ver mixed decor - seems to have a confused personality!

13 May 2011 18:44

The Old Pint Pot, Salford

Nice setting overlooking the river and well shielded by trees from the adjacent main road.
A shame the cask ales (2 on) weren't up to much; a top up asked for was a great inconvenience to the barman who just wanted to move on and serve the next person!

13 May 2011 18:40

The Crescent, Salford

Despite its outward appearance, this is a decent pub inside. 9 handpumps, of which 8 were in use when we visited. Well worth a visit!

13 May 2011 18:38

Red Lion, Swinton

A Crown Carveries pub, offering their usual (excellent value) carvery meals plus cask ales at very reasonable prices. The Marstons EPA I tried was well kept and very good value at 1.95.

10 May 2011 18:07

Masons Arms, Ramsbottom

Average-ish pub, nothing to justify a special visit there though.

2 May 2011 19:19

The Waterside, Summerseat

Reopened and refurbished. A large interior combined with plenty of seating outside. Black Sheep and Landlord cask ales available.
Worth a visit if you're in the area visiting the Footballers and Hamers Arms.

2 May 2011 19:18

The Fusilier, Ramsbottom

Cask ale taken off sale now, apparently due to lack of demand. Sadly no reason to visit this pub again.

2 May 2011 19:15

The Black Bull Hotel, Bury

Agree with the last post. A tasteful refurb (unlike many!) and 5 cask ales available - the Thwaites Original I tried was excellent.
Also worthy of mention is the food, which was of excellent quality at very reasonable prices. Highly recommended!

27 Apr 2011 21:03

The Hare and Hounds, Bolton

Now closed.

15 Mar 2011 20:07

De Rhodes Arms, Barlborough

Usual Crown Carveries selection, handy for J30 of the M1. Good value carvery food plus a couple of cask ales.

8 Mar 2011 16:22

The Carpenters Arms, Wighton

Check before you make a special journey - we called today in passing (Monday evening) but it was closed. I couldn't see a sign but assume it mustn't open Mondays.

7 Mar 2011 20:45

The Bowling Green Inn, Wells next the Sea

Good pub for traditional food supplemented by well kept Wherry. One large L shaped room around the bar with a stove fireplace. Worth a visit if you're eating in the area.

7 Mar 2011 20:43

The Crown, Colkirk

Seems mainly food orientated although three cask ales were available, two Greene King (Abbot and IPA) plus Thwaites' Wainwright.

7 Mar 2011 20:40

White Horse Inn, East Barsham

Still highly recommended. Two well kept cask ales (Adnams Bitter and Broadside) and reasonably priced traditional food. A welcoming atmosphere with a friendly landlord. Well worth a visit.

7 Mar 2011 09:52

Gap Inn, Muston

Usual Crown Carveries fayre. Decent value carvery. Didn't try any beers.

6 Mar 2011 13:39

The King's Arms, Blakeney

Highly recommended both for food and ales.
Sadly most pubs in the area seem to serve expensive, pretentious, restaurant style food - not here! Traditional pub food of good quality with decent portions. The best pub in the area. Cask ales available, some on handpump, the others by gravity straight from the cask.

6 Mar 2011 13:37

The Three Horseshoes, Warham

A nice pub with a seemingly locally sourced food menu. Worrying though that there were only 6 people in at 7pm on a Friday evening.

4 Mar 2011 20:38

The Black Lion Hotel, Little Walsingham

Currently closed. I hope it reopens before the main season starts.

4 Mar 2011 20:35

The Millstone, Bolton

A Holts pub - now called the Millstone.

18 Feb 2011 16:34

The Alma, Bolton

Called in here for the first time despite living in Bolton for over 7 years. A good choice of cask ales, the Cumberland was well kept. However the put itself is far from endearing, with peeling wallpaper and a general decrepit look. The toilet has broken tiles, graffiti and no soap, dryer or handtowel. Due to this, although the beer was good I can't recommend the pub sadly.

3 Jan 2011 20:59

Red Lion, Littleborough

A good, friendly pub with a decent choice of cask ales. We combined it with a visit to the White House and Moorcock.

28 Dec 2010 11:38

The Moorcock, Littleborough

A decent pub part way between Littleborough and the White House. Some 528 buses go past (although be careful as some go a slightly different way and don't stop outside).

28 Dec 2010 11:37

The White House, Littleborough

A nice country pub in a remote location out on the moors. 4 well kept cask ales available, good food and friendly staff. Various large rooms so plenty of space. Well worth a visit. Despite its remote location, the 528 bus stops outside so no excuse!

28 Dec 2010 11:36

The Top Bull, Breightmet

A decent and seemingly popular local on the main A58.
One cask ale (Holts bitter) on my visit this evening, which was well kept and very reasonably priced.

22 Dec 2010 23:25

The City Road Inn, Manchester

Called in, signs looked good at first but no cask ales were available otherwise we would have stayed for a few beers and food as well. As it was we took our custom elsewhere, there are plenty of pubs in the area with decent beer on!

17 Dec 2010 20:46

The Deansgate, Deansgate

Called in for the first time this week, okay but the ales we tried were far from the best and certainly not worth the expensive prices charged. We were going to eat but couldn't get a seat so went elsewhere.

17 Dec 2010 20:43

The Seven Oaks, Manchester

Small, seemingly friendly local pub - a couple of cask ales available on my visit. Ok but nothing special.

12 Dec 2010 09:13

The Victoria, Bayswater

An excellent pub with traditional furnishings and well kept ales. The food looked good, with hindsight I wished I'd eaten here!
Well worth a visit - easy reach of Paddington and Lancaster Gate.

1 Dec 2010 18:56

The Mitre, Paddington

Not a bad pub, the food was okay although I agree with the other sentiments about the plethora of reserved tables (I had to be moved from a supposedly "reserved" table that didn't have a notice on, even though several other tables were reserved).
The beer was fine and the staff friendly.

1 Dec 2010 18:54

Metropolitan Bar, Baker Street

A handy 'Spoons next to Baker Street tube station with a good line up of ales.

30 Nov 2010 00:37

The Camelford, Brighton

A great pub, visited in September. Decent cask ales, free wifi too.

9 Nov 2010 21:05

The Scarbrough Hotel, Leeds

A Mitchells & Butler pub very convenient for the railway station (just down the stairs).

Well worth a visit if you're in the area. Several cask ales, from Tetleys at 2.25 through to various guest ales. Decent food served until 10pm.

12 Oct 2010 22:43

Fowlers, Ryde

Ok 'Spoons, although I called in on a midweek afternoon so can't vouch for it at weekends or evenings.

10 Sep 2010 17:45

The White Horse, Brighton

A decent pub - gay focused but attracting a mixed crowd. Four well kept cask ales at resonable prices plus decent food and free WIFI. Well worth a visit.

8 Sep 2010 22:09

The Bright Helm, Brighton

One of JDW's worst and sadly to be avoided.
I called in twice today. At early lunch time (before 12) waited to be served at the downstairs bar as only one person on.
This evening - early tea time, about 1815, waited ages. The only guest ale went so left with just Ruddles or Abbot cask ales (compared with some 'Spoons that have about 6 guest ales). Was told the food would be 15 to 20 minutes. It arrived 30-35 minutes later and most was cold - how can that be, unless they cooked it when we ordered then just left it standing there???!
Most JDW pubs do a decent jobs but a few like this sadly let them all down by association. Not sure whether it's poor management of this particular pub or what, but as a customer I will definitely head elsewhere tomorrow!

7 Sep 2010 19:41

The King and Queen, Brighton

Called in on a quiet Tuesday late afternoon so no problems then. Fair selection of cask ales which were okay, prices weren't too bad.

7 Sep 2010 18:30

The Hobgoblin, Brighton

A decent selection of cask ales, but you certainly pay for it! 6.70 for two session-strength cask ales is ridiculous, even in the south of England - other Brighton pubs a lot better than the Hobgoblin don't charge anywhere near that much.

Although the ales were well kept, there are far better pubs within easy reach.

7 Sep 2010 18:26

The Marine Tavern, Brighton

Small, friendly pub with a cask ale available.

7 Sep 2010 11:43

The Bulldog Tavern, Brighton

Friendly pub with three cask ales on - worth a visit!

7 Sep 2010 11:42

The Paramount, Manchester

This is by far the best 'Spoons pub in the city centre and worth a visit. It's well managed, with friendly staff and efficient service. A good choice of well kept beers plus the usual 'Spoons food menu.

They also now do breakfasts from 7am, must admit I call in here quite often for a bacon roll and coffee before work too!

30 Aug 2010 12:50

The New Oxford, Salford

A friendly pub with at least 12 well kept cask ales - mainly from smaller breweries - plus a seemingly good selection of continental lagers.

Don't be put off by the location, it's only a short walk from Manchester city centre and 5 mins from Salford Central station. Very much worth the walk; an excellent pub!

30 Aug 2010 12:46

The Garrett (previously The Old Garrett), Manchester

No cask ales, but a simple and inexpensive food menu available - handy for lunch.

2 Aug 2010 12:29

The Strawbury Duck, Entwistle

Brilliant to visit the recently-reopened Duck again. It was surprisingly busy to say it's only been open for about a week!
Well worth a visit. Four cask ales, I tried the Cumberland and Black Sheep and both were well kept. We didn't eat this time, but looked at the menu and it seemed very good too.
Well done to the new landlord, please keep it up! Highly recommended again now - they should easily dispel the poor reputation from the previous management. For those who haven't visited before, it's opposite Entwistle Station (a request stop on the Bolton to Blackburn line)
.

30 Jul 2010 00:05

Old Bridge Inn, Ripponden

A lovely pub with well kept cask ales and outdoor seating overlooking the river. Recommended!

18 Jul 2010 11:52

The Great Western, Marsden

An excellent pub in a rural location on the A62 between Marsden and Delph.

Three cask ales - the two I tried were excellent. The food was excellent quality with very generous portions and superb value for money. It took quite a long time to arrive but was worth the wait!

18 Jul 2010 11:50

Swan And Cemetery, Bury

A good pub with an interesting mix of pub and restaurant clientele. 3 cask Thwaites ales available. The Sunday roast is advertised as the "best in Bury"... while it's above average, if it really is the Best in Bury that doesn't say much for everything else!

4 Jul 2010 21:06

Royal Oak, Heaton Park

A friendly local with well kept Hydes cask bitter.
Good transport links: less than 2 mins from Heaton Park Metrolink and Bury Old Road.

4 Jul 2010 21:04

The Victoria Hotel, Walshaw

Could be a very good pub, but unfortunately a let down. Two cask ales - but the Black Sheep I tried was that poor we moved on to the White Horse without risking the other!
The White Horse just up the road (or Lamb on Tottington Road) are both far better pubs with better beer.

30 Jun 2010 23:40

The Lamb Inn, Bury

A small pleasant, friendly local with a couple of cask ales. Very good indeed.

29 Jun 2010 00:03

Le Moulin de Lecq, St Ouen

Pleasant location (although not overlooking the sea) with a small selection of well kept cask ales.
Food decent too, although on my visit on a very quiet day the staff seemed more interested in using their own laptops and watching the TV than attending to customers promptly.

21 Jun 2010 23:16

Old Court House Inn, Saint Aubin

A pleasant pub overlooking the harbour with a decent cask ale available. Food looks typical pretentious/expensive type stuff though.

21 Jun 2010 23:14

The Lamplighter, St Helier

A decent traditional pub with well kept ales, well worth a visit. Shame due to its location there is no outdoor seating.

21 Jun 2010 09:31

The Peirson, St Helier

Okay pub, with some outdoor seating available and two cask ales.

21 Jun 2010 09:30

The Cock and Bottle, St Helier

A decent pub with a well kept Liberation cask ale available and a large outside seating area on the square.

21 Jun 2010 09:28

The Minerva Hotel, Hull

A decent boozer overlooking the estuary. 4 cask ales on when I called in. Outside tables and chairs for sunny weather too. Worth a visit.

14 Jun 2010 00:00

Ye Olde White Harte, Hull

An excellent, pretty unspoilt traditional pub with oak panels etc. Down a side passage off the road with a courtyard opposite for outside seating and smokers.
A decent selection of cask ales (7 I think) - I tried two Caledonian brews, both of which were well kept. The others were fairly standard stuff as I recall.
Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. I called in for a pint, tried somewhere else then headed back for more!

13 Jun 2010 23:58

Admiral of the Humber, Hull

An average 'Spoons, service ok but not brilliant when I visited on a quiet Sunday evening. Usual 'Spoons food menu and a decent selection of cask ales; the one I tried was well kept.

13 Jun 2010 23:54

Inn on the Wharf, Burnley

A decent pub with friendly staff and well kept cask ales.

10 Jun 2010 06:53

The Strawbury Duck, Entwistle

Has the pub reopened yet?

5 Jun 2010 22:03

The Elephant and Castle, Bolton

Good now, 5 very reasonably priced cask ales (two @ 1.49) and decent carvery type food. A good alternative to 'Spoons for food.

17 May 2010 07:41

The Viaduct Tavern, St Pauls

Busy pub for city-types. Decent cask ales.

14 May 2010 08:56

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

A gem of a pub tucked away down an alleyway. Well kept Fullers ales and a historic interior. Worth a visit.

14 May 2010 08:55

The Penderel's Oak, Holborn

A large Spoons with a large downstairs bar as well. Good service, decent ales, apart from them not knowing what a "well done" steak is, no complaints at all!

14 May 2010 08:52

The Cittie of Yorke, Holborn

Another visit yesterday evening, glad I did! Apart from the historic bar (I assume it must be listed?) a pint of cask bitter is less than 2! Just demonstrates how much those places charging around 3.30 a pint must be ripping people off!
Well worth a special visit.

14 May 2010 08:50

The Black Lion, Hammersmith

Called in for a few pints last night, a pleasant pub with well kept ales and friendly bar service. Worth a visit!

29 Apr 2010 20:57

The Dove Inn, Hammersmith

A busy pub with a nice veranda overlooking the river. Four well kept Fullers ales, although a bit pricey even by London standards. Worth a visit.

29 Apr 2010 20:53

The Three Pigeons, Bolton

Good value food, especially the 2 for 10 meals which are not only good value but very good sized portions too!

Two handpumps were on the bar - on my visit, one of them had nothing on but the other had a good pint of Bank Top Old Slapper on. Amusingly, one of the bar staff said she "didn't know how to do that one" and had to ask one of the other staff (I assume the landlord or duty manager?) to pull the cask pints for her :-)

Overall, well worth a visit - I will be back! - and a pleasant semi-rural setting too. 540 bus to Bolton stops outside and close to M61 junction 5.

18 Apr 2010 22:25

The Art Picture House, Bury

Definitely one of the better Wetherspoons and worth a visit. The food is good for a Wetherspoons (with their usual value menus) and the choice of cask ales has improved a lot recently. Far better than the other Wetherspoons in Bury!

Stunning decor for a pub as it still maintains the previous cinema decor fittings. Convenient location directly opposite the bus & tram interchange too.

6 Apr 2010 18:48

The Southfields, Bolton

Good value food and cask ales available.

28 Mar 2010 12:48

The Sparkling Clog, Radcliffe

A fairly big pub, with good value food served all day and 3 or 4 well kept cask ales. Worth a visit!

28 Mar 2010 12:45

Brigantes Bar and Brasserie, York

Excellent food and ales. Well worth a visit. Congratulations on making a new bar such as this so good.

17 Feb 2010 17:43

The Artful Dodger, York

Some cask ales on, but more of a bar than a pub. If you want to listen to the music or watch football on TV, I'm sure it would be fine. If you want a quiet drink, there are far better places around.

17 Feb 2010 17:42

The Bull, Fakenham

A pleasant, recently refurbished pub in Fakenham town centre. Five cask ales on - the Wherry that we drank was well kept.

Good bar food - although the Sunday roast advertised on their own website wasn't available on a Sunday lunch time, it was just the normal bar menu.

Still recommended though!

15 Feb 2010 12:56

The Smithfield Hotel, Manchester

A typical "spit and sawdust" type pub in a run-down area near the city centre, but with excellent cask ales. Worth dropping in on a pib crawl.

7 Dec 2009 18:44

The Grey Mare, Salford

No cask ales and nothing else to attract me back there again.

7 Dec 2009 18:42

The Eccles Cross, Eccles

A better Wetherspoon's pub, with about 10 cask ales available - all the ales we tried we very well kept.
Right opposite the tram stop so very handy for transport links. Definitely worth a visit.

7 Dec 2009 18:41

The Ship Inn, Rainhill

A pleasant pub/restaurant, next door to a Premier Inn and opposite Loyola Hall.

Two well kept cask ales available and good quality pub food at not too expensive prices.

27 Nov 2009 20:57

The Art Picture House, Bury

Now The Art Picture House, a Lloyds No 1 bar.

21 Nov 2009 18:51

The Rose and Crown, Bury

Called in for the first time yesterday evening since its refurb some years ago.
A busy pub with very good food (eg mixed grill sizzlers) at very reasonable prices.
Three cask ales on, the Ruddles I drank was on good form.
Worth a visit!

15 Nov 2009 09:44

The Sun Inn, Hawkshead

Wasn't overenthused about this pub despite some good previous reviews. Staff weren't particularly helpful at all and the food (which we didn't try in the end, due to a 30 min wait) seemed to be at usual, overpriced, Hawkshead prices.

14 Nov 2009 06:56

Horse Shoe, Radcliffe

A nice local Thwaites pub with 3 cask ales.
However we made the mistake of visiting on the only evening (Monday) they don't serve food so had a partially wasted journey - and this wasn't advertised anywhere until you asked at the bar!

14 Nov 2009 06:54

The Tower Bank Arms, Sawrey

5 excellent local cask ales. Good (restaurant style) food too.

Well worth a visit!

7 Nov 2009 15:15

The Heald Green (Beefeater), Headle

Not a pub as such and no cask ales. However good value daytime food, conveniently located next to Heald Green Station.

20 Oct 2009 23:25

The Taps, Lytham St Annes

Great selection of well kept ales... and we even got a seat last night!

24 Sep 2009 06:52

The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping

Visited again yesterday. Excellent service and well kept cask ales (although there only seemed to be two on now, were four on my last post in June last year).
The location with river views is possibly the best in London. The food was good and reasonably priced, although the portions seemed a lot smaller than I remembered.
Worth a special visit. Be even easier to get to when Wapping Station reopens!

18 Sep 2009 08:20

The Peter Boat, Leigh on Sea

A decent pub with a large beer garden overlooking the Thames. Cask ales too.

16 Sep 2009 22:40

The Olde Smack Inn, Leigh On Sea

A decent pub with well kept cask ales. Very pleasant views over the Thames from within the pub or on the small balcony outside (and the balcony outside has also sensibly been kept non smoking due to people eating in the area).
I called in at a quiet time in the afternoon but from that visit would recommend it.

16 Sep 2009 22:38

Elms, Leigh On Sea

A typical 'Spoons in many ways. However the service this afternoon was very fast and friendly.

16 Sep 2009 22:30

The City Pride, Isle of Dogs

No cask ales so I didn't stop for a drink. Just seemed like a typical chain pub.

16 Sep 2009 22:24

The Bulls Head, Reigate

A homely, traditional style pub with straightforward bar food at reasonable prices. 3 cask ales too. It's the only pub I've been to in the area but would go in again if I'm ever in Reigate again.

16 Sep 2009 00:07

Slug and Lettuce, Bournemouth

A decent pub, very good food and some really good special offers available.
The only pity is no real ale available - but I managed to 'make do' with Peroni on tap.

15 Sep 2009 10:01

The Branksome Arms, Bournemouth

Gay pub, no real ale but the beer garden at the back is very pleasant.

14 Sep 2009 09:59

The Bakers Arms, Bournemouth

A friendly gay pub. One well kept cask ale which is a rarity in a gay pub. Worth a visit.

14 Sep 2009 09:57

The Mary Shelley, Bournemouth

One of the better 'Spoons places. A little bit off the main area. Surprisingly quick bar service for 'Spoons, even on a Saturday night. Usual Spoons menu and ales etc. Worth a visit.

13 Sep 2009 19:50

The Q Bar, Stalybridge

A traditional type pub just under the railway bridge. Open fire going in August (although the weather possibly justified it!) and quite a large beer garden to the side and back.
Well kept Hydes cask ales. Worth a visit.

25 Aug 2009 20:11

The West Riding Refreshment Rooms, Dewsbury

Very highly recommended. Located on the station so easy to get to. Well kept cask ales at a reasonable price.
The food menu looks good although I've not eaten there.

25 Aug 2009 20:09

Brigantes Bar and Brasserie, York

Went in for the first time yesterday and very impressed. Well kept cask ales plus a wide choice of continentals too.
The food menu looked good although we didn't eat.
Not a traditional pub but still worth a visit!

25 Aug 2009 20:07

The Kings Arms, York

A very pleasant location where you can sit outside by the river (assuming it's not flooded!). Sam Smiths on electric pump which is far cheaper than most York pubs.

25 Aug 2009 20:04

The Tap and Spile, York

A decent pub with well kept ales and a decent sized beer 'garden' to the side and rear. Outside the walls so a bit further afield than many pubs, but still worth a visit.

25 Aug 2009 20:01

The Blue Bell, York

A very small pub but very traditional with welcoming staff and well kept ales. Worth a visit!

25 Aug 2009 19:58

Pivo Cafe Bar, York

A handy place which clearly cares about their beers (both UK real ales and continental lagers). Worth dropping in if you are passing.

25 Aug 2009 19:57

The Angel, Manchester

Called in for the first time yesterday since it reopened. Quite nicely furbished inside and two decent cask ales on.

20 Aug 2009 19:41

The Stables Bar, Preston

A decent pub with a good range of cask ales available.

11 Aug 2009 17:24

Fairfield Arms, Greenhalgh

Sadly the cask ales were off on my visit, however good value food available with a "two for one" standing offer.
The pub is located next to the M55 junction 3 on the Wesham side.

11 Aug 2009 17:23

The Derby Arms, Treales

Very good food, well kept Robinsons Unicorn on cask. A decent sized country pub. Well worth a visit!

19 Jul 2009 17:41

The Knowsley, Bury

Called in on a quiet Monday evening intending to order food, but the bar service was that slow we went elsewhere!

Refurb not bad inside and 3 cask ales on though - if you can wait long enough!

8 Jul 2009 00:46

Watermillock, Bolton

A large Toby Carvery pub on the A58 ring road. Now has cask ales on as well.

26 Jun 2009 17:17

Waterfold Farm, Bury

A large, family type pub that specialises in roast meals, but also has two well kept Moorhouses cask ales on. Next to the M66 junction 2.
Handy for a bite to eat at a decent price with a good beer.

26 Jun 2009 17:15

White Horse Inn, East Barsham

A decent, old coaching house type country pub on the direct road between Fakenham and Little Walsingham.
Good food and well kept cask ales; accomodation also available. Worth a visit.

25 Jun 2009 22:30

The Ark Royal, Wells next the Sea

I called in the other day and on my visit it wasn't anywhere near as bad as people have said before.
There were 5 cask ales available, the Wherry that I drank was fine. The food was okay although a little bit pricey for what it was. A handy enough location though.

11 Jun 2009 11:58

The Mad Bishop and Bear, Paddington

A handy pub and far better than most chain-operated bars found at mainline stations!
Decent enough food menu and a good choice of Fullers and other cask ales.

28 May 2009 21:08

The Bank, Manchester

Although a chain pub, a decent place with 6 cask ales available. I had the Cumberland which was well kept and at a very reasonable 2.45 for a city centre pub.
Decent, plain food, again at good value prices.
Handy location for the city centre, worth a visit although probably somewhere best to visit when its quiet!

19 May 2009 08:09

Moon Under Water, Wigan

Wetherspoons pub - the beers I tried were well kept. Handy location for both stations.

3 May 2009 23:44

The Slipway, Burscough

Very nice pub, next to the canal and bridge - very pleasant location! Easily walked from New Lane (by road) or Burscough Bridge (along the canal towpath) railway stations.
Well kept cask ales, plus an excellent value, self service (ie all you can eat!) Sunday Lunch main course for 7.

3 May 2009 23:37

The Wayfarer, Parbold

Good food (a bit dearer than average pub food, but well worth it) and well kept cask ales. Worth a visit!

3 May 2009 23:34

The Windmill Hotel, Parbold

Had a refurb since last time I was there. Modern decor which is decent (although my personal preference is older style).
4 cask ales were available at a reasonable price, which was good. Only a very short walk from the station, worth a visit.

3 May 2009 23:32

Stocks Tavern, Parbold

Sadly it would seem this pub has closed. I went past today (Sunday lunchtime) and no sign of life.

3 May 2009 23:29

The Howcroft Inn, Bolton

Called in last night, not been for ages. A decent pub, 4 well kept cask ales and a welcome escape from the usual town centre pubs! Worth a visit.

22 Mar 2009 10:02

The Strawbury Duck, Entwistle

Went there yesterday (Saturday) evening just after 7.30pm, only to find the pub closed with no notices or any other apology at either entrance (even though there were lights on upstairs and in the kitchen etc). This was my first visit for well over a year due to previous disappointments at what was once a great pub.

At this rate I'm sure it will join the growing list of pubs permanently closing... why would anyone go all that way on a wild goose chase again?

22 Mar 2009 10:01

The Trackside, Bury

The Trackside has improved a lot recently and a new manager has just been appointed. A wide range of well kept ales always available.

6 Mar 2009 17:27

The Hansom Cab, Lytham St Annes

A well kept cask ale was on and friendly bar staff.
Tried their carvery on Friday evening... excellent value for money at 3.50!

7 Feb 2009 15:27

The Queens Hotel, Lytham St Annes

Definitely the poor relation in the area. The only poor pint of the evening. There are plenty of better places in the area so don't intend to go back!

7 Feb 2009 15:25

Ship and Royal, Lytham St Annes

Decent well kept cask ales, large pub. Didn't try the food.

7 Feb 2009 15:23

The County Hotel, Lytham

A large, busy pub with a few well kept cask ales. They seem keen on real ales and even have a blackboard behind the bar asking for suggestions!
They also serve food although I didn't eat there.

7 Feb 2009 15:21

Miller and Carter, Parbold

A large, seemingly recently refurbished pub on the A5209. The open fire was welcome today!
Two cask ales on - I had a couple of pints of the Thwaites Original, which was very good. Didn't try the Tim Taylors Landlord which was also on.
The food was well presented and had far more of a restaurant than bar food feel. Prices seemed a little more than some pub prices but not much.
Overall, in my opinion a handy and decent enough place although not special enough to warrant a special journey.

26 Jan 2009 15:57

Peels Arms, Padfield

A nice, traditional style pub. Well kept cask ales. A separate dining area is available which seemed popular although I've not tried the food.

11 Jan 2009 12:15

The George Hotel, Glossop

A very handy location for the town centre and transport links. A very modern and clean interior.

Good food served and two cask ales were available (Old Speckled Hen and Spitfire) when I visited yesterday.

11 Jan 2009 12:12

The Bulls Head, Tintwistle

A friendly local with 2 cask ales on.

9 Nov 2008 10:39

The Globe Hotel, Glossop

A nice traditional pub with excellent real ales brewed on site.
Well worth a visit.

9 Nov 2008 10:37

Norfolk Arms, Glossop

A refurbished Holts pub with their standard (good) food menu and well kept Holts beers. Handy for the railway station too.

9 Nov 2008 10:36

The Old Wellington Inn, Manchester

Called in for food earlier this week. Very different to last time I ate here a few years ago. The food area upstairs is still nice, but the food is now traditional bar food. It was extremely good value for money, with good straightforward pub food and decent sized portions. Given that most city centre pubs cash in on the food market at lunchtime then don't serve food in the evening, I'll definitely be returning here!
About 3 cask ales on - I drank the Cumberland, which was fine.

25 Oct 2008 10:35

The Black Cap, Camden

A gay pub with with a very mixed clientele. Good value meals and a nice decked terrace upstairs at the back. No cask ales :-(

11 Oct 2008 18:32

The Cardinal, Victoria

A decent enough pub... Sam Smiths so very cheap beer. Apparently it gets busy at tea time but when I called in on Saturday afternoon there was plenty of room. A convenient location too, only 5 mins from Victoria Station.

11 Oct 2008 18:27

The Packhorse and Talbot, Chiswick

Called there this evening for a meal. A large pub on a busy main road, but I was still able to get a table at 7pm on a Friday evening.
A good, traditional pub food menu (none of the pretentious gastro-type food that seems to dominate everywhere else in the area!) with decent sized portions at very reasonable prices.
Two cask ales (Pride and Landlord). I had the Pride, which was ok but by no means the best pint in the area.
The bar staff were very friendly and attentive too. Overall probably more of a convenience-type pub that one to head specially to, but certainly no complaints.

10 Oct 2008 20:22

The George and Devonshire, Chiswick

Decent well kept cask ales available in a spacious pub.

Haven't tried the food.

9 Oct 2008 17:13

George IV, Chiswick

Called in for lunch today. A decent selection of 5 well kept cask ales was available. For food, they specialise in a wide selection of pies although other options are available as well. The lumberjack chips are very nice and very filling! Reasonable prices for both the ales and the food.

The pub's a decent size with the courtyard area at the back as well. A handy location being on the main road. I would definitely visit again.

9 Oct 2008 17:09

The Bull Inn, Walsingham

A decent pub with 3 cask ales.

No food in the evening, however, which is surprising.

26 Sep 2008 20:42

The Coach and Horses, Whitefield

Nice, traditional local with a very well kept pint of Holts. Still keeps the traditional rooms, including the snug at the back with it's own bar!

No food as far as I know. Convenient for buses on the main road and Besses Metrolink station.

22 Sep 2008 18:04

The Black Lion Hotel, Little Walsingham

Stayed at the Black Lion for a few days this week. Good food (the mixed grill was very good value!) with a restaurant area to the back.

Two cask ales; I drank the Wherry which was excellent, there was also another Woodfordes ale on as well.

Recommended; well worth a visit!

13 Sep 2008 15:56

The York Arms, York

A decent pub, well kept Sam Smiths on cask which at 1.50 a pint is outstanding value for money, especially for a city centre pub a stone's throw from the Minster.

9 Sep 2008 16:56

The Gillygate, York

Visited for the first time yesterday.

A very friendly pub near enough to be convenient for the city centre, while being outside the walls, just far enough away not to attract all the tourist market!

The food was very good (I had the gammon) and both cask ales, John Smiths and Hobgoblin, were well kept.

Worth the visit. I will definitely go there again!

9 Sep 2008 16:54

Rembrandt Hotel, Manchester

The cask ales have gone! (They used to have Lees on up till fairly recently).

21 Aug 2008 19:37

Mr Thomas' Chop House, Manchester

Only a very small area inside for people not drinking. Beer very expensive, even at city centre prices, at 3.20 for a pint of Black Sheep.

Despite its historic interior, there are much better pubs within a short distance.

21 Aug 2008 19:26

The Cross Keys Hotel, York

Bargain priced food - not the best you'd find, but certainly well worth the money!

Two cask ales on, Black Sheep and Deuchars IPA. I tried the Black Sheep and it was okay.

Not the best pub in the area but can be handy for the food.

14 Aug 2008 20:38

The Woodthorpe Hotel, Prestwich

A nice, large pub in a convenient but pleasant location just south of Heaton Park on the main road.

Well kept Holts ale, and reasonable (although not exceptional) food. The main problem is the bar service is VERY slow, even when it's not that busy.

Still worth a visit, however!

29 Jul 2008 18:17

Ainsworth Arms, Radcliffe

Been in a few times over the last few months. Since the refurb they are making the effort. Last time I ate there it was okay but in fairness was just after they'd reopened; not eaten there since.

Called in last night for a few pints. Well kept Bombardier on cask plus two other guest ales - no complaints!

Not a bad location with two bus routes nearby. Worth a visit.

27 Jul 2008 11:57

The Masons Arms, Bury

Was open on this visit! A decent pub with well kept Moorhouses Premier on cask.

3 Jul 2008 19:53

The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping

An excellent pub, the best I have visited in the London area and well worth a special detour!

Four very well kept cask ales at reasonable prices. Also excellent food with generous portions at very reasonable prices.

Added to that, a nice location with two outdoor areas, on different levels, both overlooking the river - and indoor areas with river views too.

I'll definitely be going there again next time I'm in London!

6 Jun 2008 15:49

The Sun Trevor, Llangollen

A good pub with large restaurant, but also selling bar snacks as well. The bar food we had was good and reasonably priced. Two well kept cask ales on, from the Weetwood brewery. Well worth a visit. A shame it was raining as I'd have loved to sit outside with the views!

On the A539, a mile or so out of Llangollen; also about a mile's walk from the Bryn Howel Hotel in the other direction.

26 May 2008 16:10

The Hamers arms, Ramsbottom

Tried the food yesterday... it was very good and excellent value for money. 8oz gammon, egg, chips and peas for 6.00!

Three cask ales on, Pedigree, Theakstons Best and Ruddles Best. Tried the latter two and both were excellent.

This pub is well worth a visit. Although in a village, easy to get to - 10 mins walk from the main road/bus route, or 10 mins walk from Summerseat ELR Station. The Footballers is literally just over the road as well.

2 May 2008 18:52

Llanerch Inn, Llandrindod Wells

A excellent pub, I called in there yesterday. A traditional, old fashioned inn. Just over the road from Llandrindod railway station.

Two real ales - we tried the Youngs Special and it was very well kept - and an excellent food menu.

If you're in that area, well worth a visit!

27 Apr 2008 09:42

The Crown and Anchor, Manchester

The pub itself isn't bad... has had a fairly tasteful refurb and the usual well kept Holts bitter/mild plus special on cask. Food is served but I've not tried it.

However last night (Tuesday) they rang last orders at 2150 and told everyone to drink up at 2220... in spite of the sign in the main doorway stating open to 2330 on a Tuesday! A bit pathetic for a city centre pub to say the least and needs sorting out.

Will try it again before long, however.

26 Mar 2008 19:43

The English Lounge, Manchester

A pleasant pub/restaurant. Well kept Copper Dragon.

Good food - not the cheapest but is more aimed towards the restaurant than the bar snacks market.

26 Mar 2008 19:27

The Pump and Truncheon, Blackpool

Visited again yesterday, very glad we did!

The best pub in Blackpool town centre that I know of.

Even out of season, three well kept cask ales. The food is very good and fantastic value for money.

A gem of a pub given its location. Well worth a visit.

14 Mar 2008 15:51

The Masons Arms, Bury

Was closed during the day yesterday (Saturday) so check their opening times before making a special visit! We were going to call in on the way back from the Lord Raglan.

27 Jan 2008 13:09

Hare & Hounds, Ramsbottom

A large pub, refurbished on a modern style inside.

Good food is served until late at very reasonable prices.

Several well kept real ales available, with a useful board to indicate their type (light-dark etc). Got the cask marque accreditation.

A very handy location for buses etc, well worth a visit.

27 Jan 2008 13:06

The Hamers arms, Ramsbottom

A pleasant pub, two well kept cask ales available.

Have not tried the food but it looked okay!

27 Jan 2008 13:04

The Lord Raglan, Nangreaves

We visited the Lord Raglan yesterday for the first time in many years.

It was definitely worth the visit. The beers were excellent and a wide range was available - from the on-site Leyden brewery.

The food was more than adequate and the prices were okay... not the cheapest available but certainly not too expensive either, especially given the location.

The pub is traditional but has the added benefit of excellent views across the valley.

My only suggestion is that two bar staff were needed - but the barmaid worked very hard so it's no reflection on her!

Overall, my visit was very positive and I'll be going back again before too long.

27 Jan 2008 13:03

The Victoria Hotel, Leeds

Called in the other day.

A good pint of Barnsley bitter with a decent selection of cask ales available.

The food was reasonable and good value for money. However, beware... the blackboards all advertise food served till 10pm, but the day I was in they stopped serving at 8pm!

19 Jan 2008 12:59

Paddy's Goose, Manchester

A traditional pub in the Village. I went in yesterday for the first time in some years and the pub had a pleasant atmosphere with two well kept cask ales.

There was also a decent-looking lunchtime food menu, although I've not eaten there for some years.

Convenient for a lot of the city centre and coach station and worth a visit.

9 Jan 2008 17:43

The City Arms, Manchester

A traditional pub with a very good selection of well kept ales. Gets very busy at times as it's only a small pub.

6 Dec 2007 18:55

The Vine Inn, Manchester

A friendly, traditional style pub. Hobgoblin cask ale was on last night - very well kept. However, a shame it was the only cask ale on - the guest had gone off - as not everyone wants to drink a 5% beer.

Well worth a visit.

6 Dec 2007 18:52

The White Hart Inn, Bouth

An excellent pub, my ideal pub in just about every way!

Excellent selection of well-kept real ales. Pleasant, traditional country pub atmosphere. Superb bar food. Just want to try the accommodation next as well!

My favourite pub - the only one so far to be awarded an accolade of 10/10 by me but well worth it!

15 Oct 2007 11:08

The Watermill Inn, Ings

An excellent pub, with several real ales available including their own brewed Collie Wobbles, which is a nice session beer.

The food is also excellent as well. Worth a visit.

22 Sep 2007 14:09

The Royal Oak, Bowness on Windermere

A popular local with about 6 handpumps, the ale I tried (Tiger and Cumberland) was kept fine.

The food is also excellent, very good value for money. Probably the best pub to eat in, in the area.

22 Sep 2007 14:06

Mariners, Bowness on Windermere

A pleasant, friendly local with well kept Jennings ale - Bitter, Cumberland and Cocker Hoop were all on when we visited.

Well worth a visit.

22 Sep 2007 14:04

The Foresters Arms, Brockenhurst

A very pleasant pub with plenty of seating outside in two beer garden areas.

Very good food and well kept ales. Just round the corner from the railway station and well worth a visit.

14 Sep 2007 19:32

The King Charles Inn, Poole

A very pleasant pub. Good bar snacks that are excellent value for money... we had a ham, egg and chips plus a pie and chips for 8!

Two ales, well kept. Friendly service.

Worth a visit, a welcome escape for the money-spinning places on the front round the corner!

14 Sep 2007 19:24

The Cork and Bottle, Weymouth

A decent sized pub and the ale was fine when we visited.

A substantial food menu offered, but we had ordered two gammons and waited a good few minutes before they came back and told us they had no gammon left!

14 Sep 2007 19:22

The Porterhouse, Westbourne

A good no-frills type boozer, a variety of Ringwood ales all well kept. Worth a visit.

14 Sep 2007 19:13

The Westcliff Tavern and Carvery, Bournemouth

A very good place to eat, good value carvery at 7.95 and also the other steaks etc were substantial and good value for money. Seating areas both inside and out.

There were two real ales on my visit, the bitter was okay.

Suggest eating here then going on to the nearby Goat & Tricycle!

14 Sep 2007 19:12

Goat and Tricycle, Bournemouth

A good pub with a tremendouds 11 handpumps, all of which were on, and all (that I tried at least) were very well kept. It's not the cheapest (as previously mentioned) but on the other hand I didn't find the prices unreasonable.

The food was also good - I ordered the mixed grill which was very filling and worth the 13.95! Beware however that you might not always get exactly what you asked for... I asked for the steak on the mixed grill well done, but it came red in the middle; also with no onions, and lo and behold it turned up covered in onions!

The pub is large and has a pleasant courtyard outside, including a covered part for non smokers.

That said, overall a decent pub and well worth a visit.

14 Sep 2007 19:10

The Royal Oak, York

Well worth a visit.

I recommend their bar menu! I recently had an excellent sirloin steak, plus traditional home style chips and peas for a remarkable 8.50.

6 cask ales, those I tried were in reasonable condition, given that not many were being sold that evening.

Worth a visit if seeking food in the evening (last orders I think at 7.45pm)

9 Sep 2007 01:33

The White Horse, Turton

Good selection of cask ales, pleasant pub. Not tried their food yet.

The Black Bull is only just down the road as well.

28 Aug 2007 08:14

The Black Bull, Turton

Good food and ale in a pleasant rural location. Worth a visit - why not combine with a visit to the White Horse?

28 Aug 2007 08:13

Olive's Bistro & Wine Bar, Edgworth

This seems to be in the process of conversion to a restaurant or bistro.

28 Aug 2007 08:11

The Waterside, Summerseat

Now closed.

26 Aug 2007 13:26

The York Hotel, Bolton

A thriving gay pub, only shame is no real ales.

18 Aug 2007 23:18

The Sweet Green Tavern, Bolton

Well worth a visit, lots of good quality ales! Also very convenient for the railway station and other transport links.

18 Aug 2007 23:17

Bird I'Th Hand, Birtle

Only Tetleys and a mild on cask, the Tetleys was unfortunately not the best on my most recent visit and quite pricey.

16 Aug 2007 13:44

The Red Bridge Tavern, Ainsworth

A few weeks ago my predicted problem happened! The Black Sheep went off when we called in for food on a Sunday afternoon. I said I'd wait while they changed it but they'd none left, so no cask ales at all.

We therefore walked up to the Duke William in Ainsworth, nearer than you think at about a 10-15 mins walk away.

A shame, as otherwise this is a nice pub.

29 Jul 2007 21:03

The Black Bull Hotel, Bury

A very pleasant local with with friendly staff.

Called in for Sunday lunch, very good food and excellent value for money.

Excellent Thwaites bitter and Thwaites guest cask ale.

Well worth a visit!

29 Jul 2007 20:58

The Strawbury Duck, Entwistle

Sadly seems to have gone downhill recently. Hopefully this will have been a one-off.

The beer selection was various Cains ales plus Pendle Witches. However the only available were a poor Cains IPA plus Pendle Witches. The food was not cheap but very disappointing, the chips in particular were the worst pub chips I can remember for a long time and tasted as though they had been on a hot tray for far too long.

Due to the pub's remote location, sadly experiences such as this will only put people off going there in the first place.

27 Jul 2007 19:42

The Banker, Cannon Street

A decent, busy pub with 5 Fuller's cask ales available on my recent visit. As well as the outside seating balcony, there is a conservatory (located directly under the railway bridge over the river) with views along the Thames.

Did not try the food although looking at the menu, would probably not have been my type of thing as I prefer straightforward, English bar meals!

Convenient for the station and worth a visit. Think average cask ale price was 2.80 per pint.

29 Jun 2007 18:48

The Volunteer, Bolton

Well kept cask Holts Bitter at a very low price (about 1.40 per pint!)

Friendly staff, a popular local.

25 Jun 2007 18:31

The Mines Tavern, Laxey

A pleasant pub, great to sit outside in the large beer garden overlooking the electric railways (both Douglas to Ramsey and Snafell Mountain).

Well kept ales and reasonable food, although they didn't know what was in their own pie! (The steak and ale pie turned up with onions and mushrooms in, although when I asked before ordering was assured no onions were in it!)

23 Jun 2007 23:02

The Sidings, Castletown

A convenient pub right next to the steam railway station and just off the main road by the Shell petrol station.

7 cask ales were on when I called in, the one I tried was excellent. Also very good value lunchtime bar snacks - nothing fancy but even the chip barm was good value.

23 Jun 2007 22:55

The Red Bridge Tavern, Ainsworth

Well kept Black Sheep, although my worry would be if this went off as there are no other handpumps or alternative nearby pubs!

The pub is deceptively spacious and pleasantly furnished.

Not tried the food... yet!

23 Jun 2007 22:50

The Falcons Nest Hotel, Port Erin

Well kept ales and good food (I had the carvery)

The best place to sit is in the conservatory overlooking the bay.

Convenient for the steam railway and bus stops.

23 Jun 2007 22:47

The Terminus Tavern, Douglas

Well worth a visit.

Right next to the termini of both the electric railway and the horse drawn tramway. At the far end of the prom so away from the busier end of town and a little quieter. The outdoor seating gives good views of the bay.

Well kept Oakells cask ales and excellent quality and value food.

23 Jun 2007 22:44

The Queens Hotel, Douglas

A busy pub, popular with locals, on the promenade but a little further away from the busiest area.

A large covered area at the front provides a pleasant place to overlook the bay while enjoying the beer.

Three handpumps, Oakells (which was okay) plus Black Sheep and Bombardier, which I didn't try.

The food was excellent value for money with extremely generous portions.

23 Jun 2007 22:41

The British Hotel, Douglas

A large but pleasant pub close to the ferry terminal with a warm welcome from the staff.

Well kept cask Oakells bitter. A comprehensive food menu, good value for money and generous portions.

Worth a visit, especially due to its convenient location.

23 Jun 2007 22:36

The Help Me Through Inn, Bury

Under new management, well worth a visit and supporting. One well kept real ale on when I visited recently.

8 Jun 2007 17:52

Bird I'Th Hand, Birtle

A very pleasant, country style pub. Although a bit out of the way, the 469 bus stops outside the door.

There are a limited range (2/3?) of very well kept real ales.

The food is a little bit pricy but is excellent and well worth the money. The staff are very attentive.

Definitely worth a visit!

8 Jun 2007 17:49

The Church Inn, Uppermill

A very pleasant pub with a genuine country pub feel. 8 cask ales were on last night out of 9 pumps available.

The two ales we sampled were their own brews, both good pints and extremely reasonably priced (around 1.50).

A comprehensive-looking food menu was available although we were not eating.

8 Jun 2007 11:34

The Masons Arms, York

An excellent pub! I've been in both this evening and last.

The food is very good with generous portions.

Four real ales were available. I tried both the Deuchars IPA and the Everards Tiger; both were very well kept.

Being outside the walls, this pub is a bit off the normal city centre route, but it still gets a bit busy from about 7.30pm - get in earlier if you want a seat!

6 Jun 2007 20:38

The Maltings, York

An excellent pub and very convenient being only a short walk from the railway station.

The wide variety of real ales are always excellent. The food is absolutely tremendous, substantial portions at an extremely reasonable price.

Gets very busy at lunch times, you need to get in early to get a table!

3 Jun 2007 16:45

Footballers Inn, Ramsbottom

An excellent pub, well worth the effort needed to get to it. Plenty of well kept real ales always on.

It's very busy on Friday evenings etc, which is of course brilliant, but you'll find it hard to get a seat!

28 May 2007 17:24

The White Horse, Walshaw

An excellent, friendly and well furnished local pub with a country feel about it. It's popular in the evenings but you can still normally get a seat.

The only cask ale is Thwaites bitter, but don't let that put you off as it's always been on excellent form whenever I've been!

I've not eaten there so can't comment on the food, although the menu seems okay.

The pub is much recommended, though!

28 May 2007 17:09

The Bulls Head, Manchester

A well appointed and friendly pub with a relaxed atmoshpere, literally just over the road from Piccadilly Station. A good selection of well kept real ales are available.

I first drank in the Bull's Head in 1996 and have been back on and off ever since! Always worth a visit.

28 May 2007 16:55

Olive's Bistro & Wine Bar, Edgworth

Last time I was in Edgworth (a few months ago) this pub was closed.

28 May 2007 16:29

The Red Lion Hotel, Hawkshaw

A pleasant, well furnished pub with well kept Jennings ales and others. The food is also good as well and they do offer accomodation if you're staying in the area.

It's also the type of place that people take their mothers and grannies out to for a meal!

28 May 2007 16:27

The House Without A Name, Bolton

A good local with well kept beers including Deuchars IPA.

Be careful you don't sit in someone's seat, though. Many seem to have invisible place names on for the regulars!

28 May 2007 16:24

Sinclairs Oyster Bar, Manchester

A good real ale pub handy for the shops (Arndale etc) and Victoria Station. The Sam Smiths is well kept and exceptional value for money! Food is good value as well. The best rooms are upstairs.

Has been completely non smoking for ages which means you can go home without your clothes reeking. It hasn't stopped people drinking there though; so much for the cynics!

Shame they don't seem to bother opening the upstairs bar, and always seem to have too few bar staff at busy times, eg Saturday evenings. That said, still good.

28 May 2007 16:21

The Dusty Miller, Bury

Well kept Moorhouses beers plus a changing guest. Very much a local, popular with real ale fans. The landlord and landlady make the effort and have made a lot of effort since they took over. Easy walk from Bury town centre.

28 May 2007 16:17

The Pack Horse Inn, Affetside

A good pub if you can get in the small lounge at the front (by far the best room, with an open fire in winter). Failing that, plenty of space to sit outside in summer as well, with splendid views for miles around. Well kept Hydes ales and decent food.

Don't rate any of the other rooms though.

28 May 2007 16:13

Mabel's Tavern, Euston

A handy pub within very easy reach of Euston, St Pancras and King's Cross. The ales have been good on my visits.

28 May 2007 16:05

The Prince Edward, Bayswater

An excellent pub. Good selection of well kept ales with a landlord who makes the effort. Food is also good value as well. I make a special effort to visit this pub when in London!

28 May 2007 16:01

The Albert, St James's

Not been in since the refurb, but previously this was a decent pub in a very handy location, with a good choice of real ales. The upstairs carvery lunch was excellent value for money!

28 May 2007 15:57

The Bulls Head, Manchester

Good real ales, friendly staff, very convenient for Piccadilly Station.

20 Nov 2006 22:56

The Hole int' Wall, Bowness on Windermere

Highly recommended for real ale fans. A genuine friendly local. Visited out of season when there were plenty of seats free, so unable to comment on what it's like in season!
