The Highwayman, Sourton

Well, this is definitely an intersting pub and worth a visit just to see the place. However, when we stopped here for a drink and a meal in the summer, we found a few things that we didn't like, Firstly, the menu was very limited; I had a turkey ploughmans type meal, the salad was very small and the turkey appeared to be processed meat, for the price I was very disappointed. On the other hand, my wife had smoked salmon and was very pleased with her meal. Also, there were a lack of tables suitable for dining. We ended up eating the meal with plates balanced on our laps. On the whole, for location and ambience, this is a good pub; but do not choose it as a destination for food. (Although the pies are supposed to be very good).

The Kings Arms, Portesham

We stopped here for lunch on a visit to the area, the food was fantastic for normal pub food, and the owners (I think they were the owners) were very friendly. We sat outside so can't comment on the atmosphere inside the pub itself, but for a lunchtime stop, highly recommended!

(Great for children too as there is a large, safe lawn for them to run on).

The Fisherman's Arms, Plymouth

Ignore my previous comment - this place has been desecrated, turned into another of the standard Barbican type pubs. It has been sold and refurbished in the worst possible way. It's lost all his character, olde pub charm, friendliness and individuality. There is no longer a free jukebox (or indeed any jukebox), pool table or dart board. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!! Try the Commercial instead if you're in the area.

The Mount Pleasant Inn, Dawlish Warren

Fabulous views, slightly disappointed by the food but the beer was ok - well, average, I suppose.

Teignmouth Inn, Dawlish

Nice friendly pub with an interesting feature well.

The Railway Inn, Newton Abbot

Only visited the once, when there was an England rugby match on, very busy but quite friendly. It's a long way to the loo though!

The Jolly Porter, Exeter

Visited here on a train journey to Exeter - nice pub, friendly owner (or was he just a barman? - think he was the owner though), food on offer too. Big seating area with large screen TV, but also a more cosy area with real fire for more intimate pints; pool table too. Worth a look, I would say.

The Rising Sun, Plymouth

If you check, you'll see I didn't rate it, just posted a comment.

The Boathouse Tavern and Grill, Dawlish Warren

Went here for a meal yesterday. Well, tried to anyway. Service was practically non-existent, bar staff totally uncaring and not interested in customer care.

A great location overlooking the sea...well, you could do from the top deck if it was open, but on a wonderfully hot and sunny day yesterday, it was closed.

And to top it all, the Newky Brown was served in a pint glass!

We certainly shan't be returning. (Not that they'll care!!!)

The Rock Hotel, Weymouth

Can't comment on it's recent history, but I used to go there regularly when Chip ran it (does he still?) - enjoyed it, friendly, easy-going, very good beer...but we're talking probably 12 years ago!!

Kings Arms, Bideford

Not at all bad. Decent beer, friendly staff, not over-run by kids.

The Gog and Magog, Plymouth

This is a typical Wetherspoons pub...ie poorly kept beer, unhelpful staff, bad food. If you like Wetherspoons, you'll love it!!

The Mermaid, Eggbuckland

Last time I went, was very much a pool-player's pub. Also has a big screen for footie.

Crabby Dick's, Bideford

Not really my sort of place, but deserves to at least be listed.

The Two Trees, Plymouth

Awful place, avoid it like the plague

The White Hart Inn, Bideford

Quiet, friendly back street pub.

The Rising Sun, Plymouth

Never been in, but advertises real ale and good food...

The Fisherman's Arms, Plymouth

This is a great little two-bar pub tucked away in one of the back streets off the Barbican (but make sure you get the right pub if you're coming up the steps from The Barbican - it's very easy to go in the first one you come to by mistake...go under the flats and it's just round the corner). There is a good selection of real ales, and a friendly landlady who'll happily play darts with her clientele (I've never seen more than six people in there at any one time). There's a quiz machine, pool table and FREE!!! jukebox. Not the place for you if you're out for a night getting drunk with the lads (although there's plenty of pubs like that on The Barbican, so maybe start here), but if you fancy a couple of quiet beers and some surreal chat with the two or three locals, give it a try. No food at the moment, but they are "considering" it for the future.

Kitty O'Hanlans, Plymouth

This is an ok pub for the City Centre, not brilliant but not awful either.

Prince Maurice, Eggbuckland

I can't really add any more to the previous reviews - this really is the best pub in Plymouth, a "country pub" atmosphere within (fairly) easy reach of the city centre. Numerous well-deserved CAMRA awards, friendly locals, good if limited selection of pub food at lunchtime (with the emphasis on PUB food...ie the traditional offerings, definitely not a gastro-pub!). There are a few tables outside if you have children with you with a pleasant outlook. And on the first Thursday of (nearly) every month there is a good-natured, well-attended pub quiz - but get there early if you want to take part because this is a SMALL pub and you may end up standing all night otherwise...not a good idea with all those fantastic real ales on offer!
