The Black Horse, Chippenham

It is close to the station, which is the best thing about Chippenham.
And being close to the station is the best thing about this pub.
A large imposing building, pleasant, from the outside...
The staff were friendly, not offensive.
Would suggest bottled beer.

The Four Seasons, Chippenham

A vaguely tolerable place.
The punters were mildly amusing.
The beer had a slight taste of having been rolled down the A4 from Chiswick.

Angel Hotel, Chippenham

This place has a lot of potential, if it were to stop trying to be so pretentious. It apears to attempt being the bar in a boutique hotel.
Staff: friendly, but sometimes haphazard.
Beer: standard fare, over chilled.
Toilets were very clean.
I write this as somebody who had a drink in the bar, and not as an overnight guest.

The Rose and Crown, Chippenham

Doesn't quite know what it is doing. Is this meant to be an "Olde Worlde" pub in the centre of a small market town, or trying to grab the picture post card clientele. the type of pub that david cameron might choose to loose his daughter.
Beer: tasteless.
Staff: colourful, but bland.

The Bear Hotel, Chippenham

Being stuck in Chippenham for a night, I tried 5 bars around the main High street/Market Place area. This was the most friendly and relaxed. It doesn't try too hard to be something that it isn't.
The bar area is spacious, basically split into two, with good views directly up the High St.
The beer, Caledonian, that I sampled was in very good condition, not chilled to tasteless buggery, as is the norm in this part of the world. The rest of the bar was well stocked for both lager and cider drinkers. The coffee was strong and flavoursome.
The couple, who have recently taken over this place, were friendly and obliging, but not over bearing. Their hospitality was good and appreciated.
The customers were fine and reasonably amusing.
Surely the best option that I sampled in this little town.

The Cross Keys, Wootton Bassett

Visited on a Monday night. Stranger in town.
The couple running it are new to this locale. Of the pubs I tried that evening, they were the most friendly and welcoming, despite being busy.
My beer, 6X, was in excellent condition and well priced.
The menu is wide ranging and aggressively priced.
It's good "pub fare".
The food was of a high quality, well portioned, and promptly served.
The pub itself consists of 2 bars and several cosy to larger rooms off of a main corridor.
It is clean and warm throughout.

The Wagon and Horses, Clevedon

Under New Management! The new people are oddly friendly, welcoming and seem to know know what they are doing; the beer was very drinkable. The local's are amusing.
