The Prince Albert, Ely

Everything that has been said about the pub is true but it depends what you want from a pub. Well kept ale and all that but atmosphere wise you would have to be well turned 65 to get on well here and have a mustard coloured cardigan with wooden buttons. Certainly unlikely to suit anyone under pensionable age. Been in a few times and I wouldnt drink there again if the beer was 1940s prices, like most of the customers

The Falcon, Norwich

If your name is Bill Gates or even Richard Branson, you might just be able to affords to drink here. Pub not too bad bit the prices!!!

The Kimberley Arms, Norwich

Sweet little pub? What particular hallucinogenic had you been experimenting with that day. This place makes the Cat N Fiddle look classy. Run by half wits for half wits and if you want a good slapping I cant think of a more likely place to get one.

The Steam Packet, Norwich

The're doing what they can for live music in a tiny little gaff. Can't stand Adanams beer but lots of people seemed to like it. Well managed, limit to what they can do given the size constraint.

The Slug and Lettuce, Norwich

Usual city centre shit. Could be any city centre. Not an evil place but the usual 'Yates' design, cheap shit trying to look classy. Full of the one night out a week brigade. On the bught side they do serve John Smiths, shit loads of places like this have stopped serving bitter at all. I sometimes pop in for one. Just the usual stuff you would expect.

3 May 2007 23:14

Royal Oak, Norwich

Good pub under new management. Every Tuesday an excellent blues jam session. No house instruments so you have to bring your own guitars but usually someone will lend you one. Excellent resteraunt and well kept beer. Check it out.

3 May 2007 23:10

The Ribs of Beef, Norwich

Yeah decent pub, usually too crowded for my liking but you can hardly blame them for that. Well furnished, clean, ggod range of drinks. Not great but pretty much ok.

3 May 2007 23:07

The Playhouse, Norwich

Odd little bar full of odd and mostly little people. Not bad place for a pint. No John Smiths (bastards). One night I was there they've got some guy placing vinyl on two decks. What is that shit all about. The reason we got rid of records in favour of CDs and now hard drives ipods etc is 'cos vinyl id shit. Why do people pretend there's some kind of art from going on 'cos some dudes playing a few records. I couls have done the same thing with my laptop but I've got 50,000 tracks not the dozen or so grubby recors that this boy had. Besides that the gaff is well worth a look at. Attached to a theatre you can forgive it for being a bit off the wall.

3 May 2007 23:03

The Office, Norwich

Does it's job. Full of yuppie (are there still yuppies) and people getting plastered on their one night a week on the razz. Not a dreadfull place but expensive as shit. Woth a look but better take you Amex card.

3 May 2007 22:58

Norwegian Blue, Norwich

Pretty shit to be honest. Cheap shitty beer, just the usual Wetherspoons type of shitty place. Most of the customers that I've seen in there would probably not feel at home on Univerity Challenge.

3 May 2007 22:54

The Nelson, Norwich

Go along with everything that's been said. Community local that seems to side step the chav brigade. Clean and tidy. Good beer and staff, check it out.

3 May 2007 22:50

The Mustard Pot, Norwich

We liked this pub and never had any problems with the dog. Maybe it was a different dog. Well appointed, clean pub. Bar staff were friendly and efficient. No probs with the beer. Always pop on if I'm in that neck of the woods.

3 May 2007 22:48

The Murderers, Norwich

Not a bad pub. Decorated in early demolition. Bit grubby but decent prices and good staff.

3 May 2007 22:46

The Mill Tavern, Norwich

The Mill Tavern is no longer. Used to have a good jam session but other than that bit of a shit hole, but none of that matters now 'cos it's gone.

3 May 2007 22:42

Micawbers Tavern, Norwich

Charactor pub for sure, in real shit location but seems to do everything right. All the nice oak beams and twee little touches. Beer is ok, well kept, staff polite and efficient. Good little pub.

3 May 2007 22:41

The Magpie, Norwich

Now closed but if you never went there, you missed bugger all. Wonder where all the weridos are drinking now?

3 May 2007 22:38

The James The First, Norwich

Decent community local, does all the stuff a pub should. Locals can be a bit rowdy but usually well natured.

3 May 2007 22:37

The Mash Tun, Norwich

It works and attracts a well behaved crown but despite obviously shit loads of money being spent on it, it's pretty ordinary. Nice and clean with decent beer but shouldn't every pub be. Ok for a visit on the circuit but nothing special.

3 May 2007 22:35

The Elm Tavern, Norwich

Friendly enough community local. Younger age group but never seen any problems. Clean and well kept.

3 May 2007 22:17

Compleat Angler, Norwich

Pretty ordinary. Which is sad as given it's riverside location it could be better. Staff do the job but little more than that. Place is a bit tired. Ok for a quick drink but I wouldn't want to spend an evening there.

3 May 2007 22:08

The Bull Inn, Norwich

Only been there during the day. Good looking pub, clean with a vary good beer garden. Never eaten there, well ok a plate of chips once but the resteraunt looks well laid out and very efficient. Two female bar staff were on duty. Neither looked old enough to drink in the place but at my age that's not uncommon. Polite and served drinks well. Beer ok with reasonable range. Clientelle leaving towards slightly chavvy but not hideously so. Few shaven heads, why do guys shave their heads? Never could understand it. Oh back to the pub, worth checking out .

3 May 2007 22:01

The Brickmakers, Norwich

With the demise of the Romany, The Brickmakers only serious music rival in the city, The Brickies is now top of the tree. Pub itself is a bit tired and shabby and a bit of furniture has seen better days. Toilets are spotless and the beer is fine. Locals can be a bit rowdy but that's not an awfull thing. Pub obviously dominated by it's live music. Big stage, good PA and mixing desk, new lighting rig that is really quite impressive. New second 'live' room mainly for all the emo (shit) bands that no one wants to hear. Can hardly hold a candle to the general quality of bands that are on. The legend in his own lunchtime Lee Vassey performs there every Sunday afternoon. Good jam session on Monday, even if it is a bit clicky. Bands like Choir Boys, Hamsters, Buster James, Tea, Adam Bomb, Worlds Apart, Emma Hall Band are regular contributers. Recent air conditioning makes the place a lot more pleasant when they are busy and they do get very, very busy. If you're into live music this is the place for you if not it's not. Never been in during the day so I can't comment but I believe it's not very busy.

3 May 2007 21:51

The Branford Arms, Norwich

Yeah decent pub. clean and well kept. Amazing range of bottled products. They must have every bottled spirit, shot and whatever behind the bar. Good beer and once a month they have a kind of jazz, 30s 40s band. really good stuff. Pub is worth a visit.

3 May 2007 21:37

The Ber St Gates, Norwich

Bit of a dump. think most of the hookers have moved from Ber Street now. Won't be smokey from 1st July 2007 so we'll see what happens.

3 May 2007 21:25

Belle Vue, Norwich

Think that some people must be getting their pubs mixed up. Yes there's nothing wrong with the beer but then there shouldn't be. I've been in the licensed trsde for donkey's years and there is nothing magical about keeping good beer. The only time we should mention beer is if it's not well kept. Place is friendly enough but it's dingy as shit and in the back bar it's so dark I thought I'd morphed into Stevie Wonder the fisrt time I went in there.

3 May 2007 21:01

The Beehive, Norwich

Decent enough local but wouldn't travel far to get to it.

3 May 2007 20:12

The Artichoke, Norwich

Much improved. Just hope the new people can keep on top of things. This pub given it's location will require a watchfull eye if it is not to return the the bad old days. As it stands a good pub, good well kept beer and regualr entertainment.

3 May 2007 20:10

The Alexandra Tavern, Norwich

Clean friendly local with substantial student audience. Not a bad pub but nothing to rave about.

3 May 2007 20:07

Spencer's, Norwich

Stand by my earlier review but have to agree with poppi about the closing times. We are not talking about a late drink or the old style lock in here, I mean a place should stay open for the hours stated or the hours it usually stays open. No landlords, don't start quoting me the law here, I know you can legally close anytime you want, I'm not saying you can't. I'm saying if someone gets a ten quid taxi from the other side of the city, or worse from out of town because you are known as being open til 2 or 1 or 12 or 11, the actual time is irrelevent. Only to find that you are closing early because, 'your tired' 'it's been a long day' 'you've had a row with your missus' well learn to live with it. We all get tired and have long days. The girl at the check out at Tesco can't knock off early 'cos it's been a long day. Start thinking about customer service, customers, remember those awkward little shits who actually pay the bills. C'mon whatever time you say you open til then open til that time.

2 May 2007 14:22

Yates's, Norwich

It's shit 'cos it's Yates's but it's one of the least shit Yate's I've been in. Nothing wrong with the beer or selection. Decor wise like any other Yates's. Toilets could do with a refurb but clean and functional. Ebay plasma screen TVs everywhere. Music is marginally better than the usual boom boom club shit. Ok it's not Stairway to Heaven and if I sound like I'm defending Girls Aloud, then I'm not but it's just that reasonable inoffensive pop chart shit, which is shit but not as shit as dance music. That's the most shit's I could get into one sentence. Never seen any trouble there, door staff seem pretty switched on. Still a Yates but ok for a couple of drinkks

30 Apr 2007 00:29

The Wild Man, Norwich

Not a terrible pub at least not been turned into a brass and polished wood Wetherspoons monstrosity. The place is called the Wildman because it used to be a lunatic assylum. Well if you go in most nights you'll see not a lot has changed from those days in fact a reasonable prtion of their clientele look like they belong in an assylum. Often just seems on the periphery of being out of control but to be fair have never seen real problems their you just kind off expect it. No it's not the chavvy brigade, it's like the entire clientele could be Big Issue sellers, the kind of I'm too werid for my own good crowd. Beer in there is ok and it's worth a look with some live music on certain nights but don't dress to impress, they don't.

30 Apr 2007 00:18

The Windmill, Norwich

If this place burned down it would do about 20 worth of damage. Never seen a pub so run down in a long time. Clientele seem to suit the decor, slippery likely lads you wouldn't turn your back on for a second. I've heard they're gonna knock it down so they can bulid a slum.

30 Apr 2007 00:08

The West End Retreat, Norwich

Little pub, well kept beer, clean and tidy. No prolematic customers in fact most times I've popped in no customers at all. The truth is it's in a timewarp. Feels like your stepping into the early seventies. Not a bad place by any means but will never set the world alight. Average customer age is approaching 100.

30 Apr 2007 00:04

The Ten Bells, Norwich

Not a bad pub and well kept beer. Bit lost in it's theme, if a pub needs a theme. Few signs on the wall for streets and places, reminicent of a students room. A red telephone box in one of the rooms doing little other than being there. Whole place just lacks any definitive direction. Not that sinfull though. Decent enough place for a drink and a talk.

29 Apr 2007 23:59

The Stores Cafe Bar, Norwich

Weid little place. Pre clubbing joint but it seems to work and it's open til one but you gotta be in by twelve most nights. Usually busy so they must be doing something right.

29 Apr 2007 23:53

Spencer's, Norwich

Long L shaped upstairs bar. Reasonable decor but nothing special. No real ales but usual selection and that seems well kept. Usually seem to be understaffed with on eguy working his bollocks of behinfd the bar. Best juke box in Norwich, great selection. Downstairs bar with an odd dance area. Main reason peole use this pub is 'cos it's open til four at weekends but closes earlier in the week (but seldon before one). Seen a few little scuffles but the door staff (only on at weekends) have always sorted it out quickly and professionally.

Nothing special but where the hell else do you go if you want a drink at one in the morning and you don't want to pay 37,000 to get into Mercey.

29 Apr 2007 23:51

The Refreshers, Norwich

not been in during the day but I hear the food is decent value. At night, however, bit hard to be too critical of the clientele because there usually isn't any. Those who do remain are definately in the superchav league. Never seen a problem, fight or so in ther but probably 'cos they're actually too hammered on stella to fight anyone. Not a strongly managed pub.

29 Apr 2007 23:42

The Mitre, Norwich

Not a bad gaff, beer is ok, prices as good as anywhere, clientele, seem for the main part, ok. Main whing is it's too dark, atmoshere is fine but it's like drinking in a coal shed. I know electric isn't cheap but c'mom now, nice to be able to see what your drinking.

29 Apr 2007 23:34

Henry's Bar and Cafe, Norwich

Well decorated with higher prices than you might like but if that's the price of keeping the Wetherspoon brigade out then I guess it's price worth paying. I thought the food was crap and well over priced. All in all not a bad pub though, well run and staff are quite well trained and cheerfull.

29 Apr 2007 23:30

Heartsease, Norwich

Fairly typical community local. Needs a makeover but then so do the customers. Beer is well kept and decently priced. You get a crick in your neck from looking over your shoulder all the time. Wouldn't hang out there for too long. Dodgy old customers, yes one pint will do me then I'm off.

29 Apr 2007 23:27

Glasshouse, Norwich

Wetherspoons, well no need for a review, said it all really. Not the worst I've been in and not the best. The usual chave central, watered down with a few students at the weekend. Cheap drinks, you would expect that and the food is reasonable value but I wouldn't go there for more than one drink and then only to 'quietly' take the piss out of the pathetic collection of pissed up loosers that masquarade as real people. Croc of shit but just what you would expect.

29 Apr 2007 23:22

The Ferry Boat Inn, Norwich

Now closed. Parasites from Norwich City Council saw to that. A few whinging yuppies from across the river moaning about music from apub that had been there a damn sight lobger than they had. The council will not be happy until there is not one music venue left in Norwich.

29 Apr 2007 23:15

The Garden House, Norwich

Can't knock the range or quality of the beer, quite expensive though. The pub itself baffles me. It's always busy, why? Nothing special about it. Music is pretty shit. Garden you can't argue with hence the name but the rest of the place is just horribly 'ordinary'. Noisy students and a smattering a chavs. What that all about.

29 Apr 2007 23:11

The Fat Cat, Norwich

I'm the man who's not into real ale but I guess I have to say it is a shit hot pub and all the stuff people say is true. Wish, to my taste, there was some music but what the heck, the guy has got winning formula that works.

29 Apr 2007 23:07

Eaton Cottage, Norwich

Well kept pub, good selection of beer and well kept. Well disciplined, no obvious chav types, fair few students as well as genuine locals. Thursday night see's Lee Vassey, Norwich's own legend in his own lunch time. It's always packed, too packed as it happens but no one seems to mind.

29 Apr 2007 22:56

The Cidershed, Norwich

It's everything that everyone says about it but not everyone is into real ale. I Know Camra with have a contract on my head for this but I think it tasts like shit. Gimmi a nitro gassed John Smiths any day. Problem with real ale is this. I can go into any pub in the country and if the beer is well kept ie lines clean then a John Smiths or any other 'normal' beer will taste the same anywhere. In a real ale pub you are faced with 11,000 hand pumps with not one single name that you recognise. And it takes 38 pints before you find one that doen't taste like shit. Sorry all you bearded dudes in sandals and jumpers that your Mum knitted, that's just how it seems to me.

Besides that the place is just odd. Friendly certainly, with good clientele and no sign of any problems. Goog polite and efficient staff, get served quickly.

But it's still odd.

29 Apr 2007 22:49

The Constitution Tavern, Norwich

Used to be a real dump. The latest Govenor seems to be doing a good job turning it around. Reasonable friendly if not noisy community local with frequent entertainment, singers and karaoke.

29 Apr 2007 22:42

The Castle, Norwich

Gay bar for sure. My patner and I are both straight and we use it now and then, never had any problems in any respect. Well fitted out modern, clubby feel, clean as a whistle. Yeah, decent pub.

29 Apr 2007 22:40

City Gate, Norwich

You certainly, until recently needed to be wearing head to toe Burberry just to get through the door. More tucked into socks Primark jogging pants than you could shake a dead hampster at.

Been in last week and believe I may have seen a whiff of improvement. Clientele seemed marginally less chavvy. We'll always need this type of pub, cheap booze and an air of out of control about it but if it, also under new management is improving then we'll give it a go.

29 Apr 2007 22:37

The Cat and Fiddle, Norwich

Think the comment by ed chambers must be about a different pub. 'CLEAN' it hasn't been cleaned since the old queen was on the throne. Type of place where you wipe your feet on the way out. 'FRIENDLY' if you go in there without pepper spray, a stab jacket nad an AK47 you're a braver man than me Gunga Din. I have to say it's worth a visit from the novelty point of view but don't look sidways at anyone, don't pay with a note bigger than a fiver, don't go in with a flash mobile or you'll come out without it, don't go to the toilet in any circumstances unless your wearing a full nuclear biological and chemical protection suit and gas mask. The person who discribed it as Norwich's shit hole was being rather kind.

29 Apr 2007 22:31

Boundary, Norwich

Been through changing fortunes over the years, been a ggod pub, been a bad pub. Until recently full of dodgy red faced stella drinkers. Polciy about no caps and everyone in the place wearing a cap. If your gonna have rules then at least stick to them. Under new management again for the umpteenth time let's hope they make a better job. Was in there a week or so ago and it seems some what improved. Decor wise the leasing company has spent thousands on doing it up. Sadly they may not have spent thousands on sorting it out. I'll give it bebefit of the doubt and keep popping in. The new people deserve some support if they genuinely want to make this a decent pub.

29 Apr 2007 22:20

The Kings Arms, Ely

It's had it's ups and downs but last time I was in, last week it seems to be on an upper. Some decoration done, seems to have got rid of most of the 'clowns'. Everything going for it if the management can be strong and keep the tossers out they'll have a really nice pub.

29 Apr 2007 21:52

The Hereward, Ely

The chav central comment is probably true but the food is good value.

29 Apr 2007 21:49

The Fountain, Ely

Can't complain about the beer and it's a well disciplined pub with decent clientele. Have to say the comments about closing early is one of the most grevious things a pub can do in my humble opinion. People are entilted to drink and be served until the time stated or the time that the pub usually closes. We're not talking legal stuff here, I know the pub can close anytime they decide. I mean the moral and ehtical issue of taking peoples money then closing befroe you expect them to, we not talking about late drinks or lock ins, just the normal time that they close, or should close each night.

29 Apr 2007 21:48

The Cutter Inn, Ely

Improved under new ownership. Obviously invested some serious dosh.

29 Apr 2007 21:42

Bell Hotel, Norwich

Lot's of people use this place so what would I know. Typical Wetherspoons, I've never liked it much. Meals are the usual fairly good value but most times I've eaten there they've managed to get the order wrong. Staff as usual seem inexperienced, pissed off and don't wanna be there. Typical Wetherspoons clientele. Day time it's alcoholic business men and in the evening the light weight chaff brigade with a few students and families thrown in for good luck. Never will understand this type of venues 'no misic' policy.

29 Apr 2007 21:40

The Artful Dodger, Norwich

Much inproved in recent months under new ownership. Always good when a new music venue opens. Not too sure about some of the bands but they all deserve a chance. Good luck to them, hope it works.

29 Apr 2007 21:32

The Angel Gardens, Norwich

Community local but can be problematic. Witnessed a member of bar staff serving a guy who had been barred and telling him to 'hurry up and drink his beer' before the boss got back. No way to run a pub. Barred is barred and your staff should know that.
