The Post Office Vaults, Birmingham

Popped in both before and after football at Walsall. Brilliant selection at decent prices. Lunchtime was quiet, early evening it was rammed but not uncomfortably, and no problems getting served. My pub of choice if I've got time to kill near New Street station...

Edmunds Bar, Birmingham

Nice enough pub but a little soulless. Tried their own Christmas Ale but it was a little bland....IPA was better....

The Freemasons Arms, Covent Garden

Fairly dull pub as others have said - not a massive fan of Shepherd Neame beers though you're ok if the Whitstable Bay is on. However, it is a 100% reliable pub for watching sport. Very few places in Soho / Covent Garden these days who are prepared to foot Sky and BT Sport bills, but this has become our default central London pub for the football....

White Horse, Borstal

Visited for a meal for my Mum's birthday - fantastic Sunday lunch. Looked a great pub as well - very nice Theakston's Best.

Globetrotters, Yeovil

We always struggle to find decent real ale pubs when we come to Yeovil for football....thought we'd be ok here from the reviews but it was a bit disappointing. Six hand pumps, but only three being used. I had a JHB (Oakham) which tasted on, clearly on the turn. The Fullers London Pride then ran out, leaving just a ropey Old Speckled Hen. They clearly don't serve enough real ale to justify a selection of six....would be better off concentrating on one or two served well...

The Butchers Arms, Yeovil

We always struggle to find decent real ale pubs in Yeovil when we come for the football, but this one was excellent. Two decent ales (including Bass), very friendly crowd, I don't think we'll bother looking elsewhere on future trips....

The George and Dragon, Swanscombe

Brilliant - two excellent Caveman beers plus three other handpumps and a huge bottled choice as well. Very friendly barman, they even arranged a quick tour of the brewery and a taste of the Citra. Perfect pre-or-post match pub for Ebbsfleet Utd (10 min walk downhill to the ground). Going to recommend the Caveman beers to some of my other local pubs....

The Magpie and Crown, Brentford

Has been the pub of choice when going to football at Griffin Park. Friday night game this year and the pub was packed but still a great selection of ales and foreign beers. I've tried most of the pubs in Brentford and this one's the best...

The Express Tavern, Kew Bridge

For some reason I'd never fancied going here....exterior looked a bit run down (though that will often get me through the door), somehow I expected it to be a bit rough. Not at all, wonderful place with a lovely beer garden for a sunny Sunday afternoon. Three ales, friendly bar staff...

The Eagle Ale House, Clapham

Brilliant pub....fantastic to find a proper real ale pub devoted to sport. This will become my default choice in Clapham - I watched the FA Cup Final here and returned for the Champions League Final. Very friendly place, made lots of mates watching the game, all with a wonderful beer selection. Several Downton beers on alongside a couple of milds...

The Rifleman, Twickenham

In an area blessed with great pubs this one tends to be a bit overlooked. Very friendly, very cosy and usually an interesting selection of beers. We've recently moved to Srawberry Hill from Twickenham and this is likely to become our local....

The Fox, Twickenham

I never used to go here often, generally preferring the Eel Pie. But I think they've done a fantastic job....still has character but much more practical, and still has a fantastic range of beer. Whether the clientele changes remains to be seen - my wife can be a bit particular about pubs and prefers beautiful cosy pubs to proper old boozers and she loved it so that might tell you something, but I still think it should appeal to everyone....

The Bree Louise, Euston

I absolutely loved it and will definitely be back....sensational range of beer. I agree that the decor isn't exactly state of the art but that didn't bother me...maybe a little bright. My wife is more of a pub rather than beer enthusiast so she wasn't too fussed, not cosy enough for her so we moved on after one just I was planning an extended session....

The Will Adams, Gillingham

Favourite pub in Gillingham and my pre-match pub of choice - really good selection of real ales in good nick, always a cheerful atmosphere and agreeably tatty. Perfect really

The Cock Inn, Luddesdowne

Fab pub, with a great range and a very decent pint of Goachers Mild and perfectly good food. I'm not a regular and I'm sure it's very much a locals pub (it would have to be, given the location) but the staff were all exceedingly friendly. My nostalgic side could have kept me gawping at all the memorabilia for hours, and I can't help thinking it would have been a fantastic place to get snowed in a few weeks ago....will definitely be going out of my way to take more people there, one of Kent's best....

The Marble Hill, St Margarets

Tried it out for Sunday lunch - friendly place and I quite like the decor, great place to lounge around. Slightly spoiled by one of the two barmaids being unnecessarily rude (twice doing a "talk to the hand" gesture when asking a simple question, then disappearing...) but maybe she was having a bad day, seemed a bit stressed. But would go back, food was good, beer was excellent....

Britannia Bar Cafe, Rochester

Decent pint of Black Sheep, great food and exceptionally friendly. Took my Mum on Mothers Day and she loved it!

The Grove Inn, Holbeck

Great pub with an excellent selection of beer, all in good nick. The highlight of the day - spent a happy couple of hours in here before watching my hopeless football team get relegated at Elland Road. Bit off the beaten track so great location if you want a quiet pre-match pint

The Vat and Fiddle, Nottingham

Love this pub, always a great selection of unusual and guest beers in immaculate condition - a must for any away trip to Forest or County. In fact, as a Gillingham fan, invariably the overwhelming highlight. Especially yesterday

The Star and Garter, Soho

Really wanted to like this place - nice atmosphere and not too crowded even on a Friday night - but the beer was pretty shocking : 3 consecutive grim pints, not exactly cheap, and staff a bit short on patience as well...

The Porcupine, Leicester Square

I only recently went here for the first time recently, despite spending half my life hanging out in pubs in this area. I always figured it would be heaving...but it's fine, decent beer and the staff were happy to let you taste the more unusual ones...

The Salisbury, Leicester Square

Great pub, and a decent meeting place in the West End as reasonably large and easy to find. Lots of decent beer (decent choice of real ale even if it is from all the usual suspects), friendly staff...I echo the other positive comments on here

23 Apr 2007 17:49

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

Great down to earth pub, down an obscure alley which doesn't stop plenty of people finding it (including walking tours). Beer in great nick, staff very friendly, stairs to the loos are an erection of rare beauty, not to be attempted by the clumsy....

4 Feb 2007 19:50

The Clubhouse, Twickenham

Probably my favourite pub in Twickenham...always friendly, generally quiet and civilised. They'll put whatever sport you like on tv, serves some local (though rather bland) ales...must be getting old but it's just far enough out of town to avoid any nobs that are around....

3 Jan 2007 22:50

The Man of Kent Ale House, Rochester

Fantastic range of beer in good condition - Kent brewers emphatically supported but loads of interesting foreign stuff as well. Down to earth, friendly with invariably a scrap between visiting dogs thrown in - best pub in the area by far
