The Bobbin, Clapham

Live just round the corner and the Bobbin is a great boozer for a quiet evening pint with friends. Totally agree about it being a proper pub in a sea of identikit establishments.

Sunday lunch normally pretty good, hearty helpings of roast meat but the last time I was there the beef was very fatty. Perhaps reduce the portion size and increase quality?

But overall, a great little pub.

The Rake, London Bridge

Nice bar area although a bit small and the outside garden is a gem (although why is the umbrella up now it's almost Summer?) But the bar staff have to take the award for most pretentious beer snobs I've ever come across. Fair enough you don't serve Stella - but if someone asks for it don't address them as if they've just crapped on your living room carpet! Pork pie is good too.

The Calf, Clapham

Have been living round the corner on and off since Sep 2004 and the Calf has gone seriously downhill since then. I think they changed management at the end of last year? Anyway, half the beers are always off, the one's that are "on" often taste distinctly dubious and I wouldn't dare touch the food. Bar staff are pleasant enough but there is the small matter of communication issues...

The Stonhouse, Clapham

Always have a bit of a mixed bag at the Stonhouse. Food is pretty good, but at the high end of pubs in Clapham. Service can range from good to utterly shambolic...6 of us decided to go for Sunday lunch a month or so ago and it took over 90 minutes from ordering to get our main courses. The kitchen were apparently "hungover" which wasn't particularly funny. However, we did get a bottle of wine and all the desserts knocked off the bill. The most recent experience, on a Sunday night, one of our main courses was forgotten (this is basic stuff). Again staff very apologetic but they just seem a bit disorganised. Couldn't really comment on the "smug Clapham disease"...perhaps it's because (thankfully) they don't show football and have banned paint-splattered overalls?
