The Fox, Twickenham

Happy to report the cask ale has had a dramatic improvement. Had a really good, fresh pint of Naked Ladies. Nice to also see some good bottled beers from Oakham, BrewDog and the USA. Haven't eaten but heard good things.

I take my hat off to you. Never have truer words been written.

The Rifleman, Twickenham

Hadn't been in for years but popped in last week and had forgotten what a lovely little back street boozer it is. Had a really well kept pint of ale, cant remember what it was, I'd had a few. Friendly barman, nice atmosphere, will be back. 8/10

The Prince Blucher, Twickenham

3.85 for a Guinness with a 2 inch head! Tasted crap, left most of it and went back across the road to the Sussex. 3/10.

The Teddington Arms, Teddington

Quite possible the most mental interior I've seen in a long time, gold celling? Looks like something out of an Austin Powers movie. That aside, had a nice pint of Sanbrooks Junction (make sure you get it in a straight glass as if poured in a headstarter as my first one was, its not nice fizzy) and had to smile after overhearing the bouncers talk about the scraps they've had in their time then in their next breath, talking about living at home with mum. 7/10

The Anglers, Teddington

Seems to be run by 'youffs' who have had more time in training on how to tie a massive tie knot then how to serve behind a bar. Why Fullers feel the need for the staff to wear shirt and tie is beyond me, its a pub. Was over fun with children, should have rearlised that after seeing the playground in the garden. Average all round really, 5/10

The Old Anchor, Twickenham

Had a great day in here yesterday watching the rugby, good atmosphere, good beer, good banter, will be back.

The Lock Inn Cafe (Canal Side Cafe), Bradford on Avon

Had another great breakfast here on Sunday. Again, would recommend to anyone visiting Bradford-on-Avon.

The Old Ham Tree Inn, Holt

Had lunch here and we were the annoying customers who arrive at 1.55pm with the kitchen closing at 2pm. Even though we had missed last orders, they bent over backward to accommodate us, even bringing out a lamb bone for our dog. Food was good pub grub and real ale was very nice, would visit again when were next in the area. 8/10

How can you say I'm spouting rubbish? You weren't in the pub when we were there, no one was. And as you weren't there how can you say I'm a unpleasant person when you've never met me? If you are the type of person who frequents this establishment, you're not doing it any favors with you spiteful digs at people who do use B.I.TE. as it is intended. In no way was my review a personal attack, we were served an awful meal and as the landlord had no interest or understanding of customer service, we felt it necessary make other people aware of our experience.
Thank you and good night.

The Lass O'Richmond Hill, Richmond

Had lunch here yesterday, food was fine and reasonably priced for pub grub. Specials seem a bit dear, 26 for a steak. Had a lovely pint of Twickenham's Naked Ladies, great to see Young's including local beers. Decor is fitting and service was top notch, will definately be back, hopefully to have a session and watch the rugby 8/10.

I can tell you exactly what day I was in, Thursday 8th September 2011. Why would I write a spiteful comment on a pub I will never be going to again? What do I have to gain? I'm not a local publican, I'm only trying to stop honest people making the same mistake as we did. The food offer sign is at the top of the road at the junction with the main road.

Now, please try and use B.I.T.E. as it is intended to be used (as I have, please see my previous reviews) and not as a promotional tool for your own pub.

What a pathetically desperate, sad individual you are.

The Bear, Twickenham

Sadly all the good beers have gone to be replaced with the staple fosters etc. Going after the weatherspoons trade and its working. Shame.

12 Feb 2012 16:41

The Old Goat, Fulwell

Looks great on paper. Food was nothing special and beer, although a great selection is way, way over priced. 5/10

After walking the dog along the beach popped in here this summer for some lunch.

I dont have a vendetta against this pub, only been the once, I'm not even from the area.

Went to the bar and there was no ale on and no other customers, that should have sent my pub-sense tingling. No bother, ordered Guinness and wine and 2 'fresh, home made' burgers. To say the burgers tasted like dog food is an insult to Pedigree Chum. Both plates went back to the kitchen with one bite out of each burger and the undercooked oven chips uneaten. Would have expected the manager to say something, but nothing. When my better half complained we were told the meat was fresh in today and what was our problem. He then shrugged his shoulders and walked off. Worst meal we've ever had. And to add insult to injury, when driving away up the lane saw a sign offering 2 for 1 on all lunches!! Not offered to us, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

The Roebuck, Richmond Hill

Possible the best view from a pub in London, if not the country. Agreed you tend to spend little time in the pub itself, even in winter, but staff are attentive and know their beers and with a good selection. Bit more expensive than others but its worth it.
Havent eaten so cant comment on food.

The Marlborough, Richmond

Had Sunday lunch here, was ok, veg was good but not enough meat. Dont visit if your a wine lover, took us til at least half way through the wine list to find something we liked and by then it was time to leave.

The Watermans Arms, Richmond

Great little pub hidden away and well worth a visit. Go to the cinema opposite but pop in for a pint before and then a swift one at last orders on the way out.

7 Jan 2012 16:55

The White Cross, Richmond

Nice pub with good service, food could be a little..... more imaginative. And I know its Youngs but the choice of ales are pretty bad. Still worth a visit though.

7 Jan 2012 16:53

The Lamb Inn, West Wittering

Had lunch here in September, apart from the barmaid deciding to finish her shift halfway through our order and then another deciding to do the hoovering while we were having lunch, it was fine.

The White Swan, Twickenham

Such a shame what has happened to this pub. Totally ruined by rich owners who bought it to turn into their own private drinking establishment, not by locals as had been previous thought. If you want to see the type of people who caused the global economy to crash, they all drink here. They are the only ones who can afford it. Total rip off. Gone is all the quirkyness and character. None of the old faces which says a lot. There was nothing wrong with the pub, staff or regulars, it just needed the broken bits fixing.
Service is awful, the lone barman was asked to make a coffee for someone so not only were we subjected to the racket of the machine which can be heard wherever you sit but then had to wait the best part of 15mins for a drink. Would have walked out if not meeting family. And be warned you could be charged nearly 9 for 2 pints then told to move because the owners want to sit where you are. Shocking, the owners should hang their heads in shame. Much much better pubs around.

The Sussex Arms, Twickenham

What a fantastic pub. PUB in the true sense of the word. With 18 cask ales and ciders you cant go wrong. You can if they aren't kept right but never had a bad one here and having worked in hospitality for more than half my life, I take my hat off to the management for keeping them so well. Very hard to get right and lots of hard work involved.
Yes it can get real crowded but that creates a nice atmosphere with people from all walks of life. The staff understand the importance of customer service and its great to see the management on the floor serving and socilaising with punters. Your custom is made to feel truely appreciated.
The food? I don't think I've had a better roast anywhere!
A must visit if in the area.
A must visit if thinking of opening your own place.
A must visit for Fullers, Youngs, Enterprise etc.

1 Guinness, x2 125ml of house white wine - 13.90. Furious. Will write a proper review after I calm down.

The Ship Inn, Itchenor

Has the feel of nice old village pub but looks like it is food led as most of the pub it laid out for dining. Had a lovely pint of Summer Lightning but will not be going back. I asked the barman if there was a minimum on cards and he said no so started to run a tab but event conspired against me and had to leave after a pint. When I went to settle up I was charged 4.10!! More than central London prices. I asked why and was told they charge 50p to use the card machine, shrugged at me and walked off. Now its only 50p but I left feeling like I'd been mugged and my custom was not needed or wanted. Wonder if locals get the same treatment?

The Prince Albert, Twickenham

Only been a few times but this is a good pub and the Thai food is one of the best I've ever had. Was heaving on the last Friday we went. Every time I went to the bar the person next to me struck up a conversation which is a good sign of a friendly place. 8/10

The Bear, Twickenham

Nice range of beers, quiet during the day but very busy fri/sat night. One of the better pubs to go to on a pub crawl.

The Cross Guns, Avoncliff

An old boozer with amazing location. But do have to agree with other comments, wasnt the friendliest welcome (yes comically rude). Govnor seemed to be doing me a favour by taking my order and got the impression that not to much of an effort is needed due to the location. Shame.
Good range of beers though and would recommend a visit. Havent eaten so cant comment on food. They also do carry outs which is great for the lovely walk along the canal back to Bradford. 10/10 for location, 5/10 for service.

The Lock Inn Cafe (Canal Side Cafe), Bradford on Avon

I think this place it wonderful. In a time where the pub industry seem to think that what people want is a generic template, devoid of characture its great to find somewhere the total opposite. We live in London but regulary travel to Bradford to visit elderly relatives. This is a must stop place for us. Yes the staff tend to be on the young side (must be a great employer of young people in the town). And yes the menu is not ground breaking but we dont care. Its the fact that they make the effort. Its friendly, and funny and run by real people not some massive pub company. Have had some great breakfasts and wonderful homemade (yes it was) lasagna. Dog friendly, cat friendly, everybody friendly. Great location also. One day I would like to own my own place and will be stealing (sorry owners but it is the greatest form of flattery) some of the wonderfully quarky feel this place has. Would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the town, an unspoilt little gem.

The Boaters Inn, Kingston Upon Thames

Cracking pub. Great range of beer well kept and the food was good also. Friendly staff and wonderful location. Stumbled on it by chance, Kingston has always been Chav-ton to me and have tended to avoid drink here. Would highly recommend it, well worth a visit.

The Barmy Arms, Twickenham

I think If we discount the comments posted on rugby days (never a reflection of a pub when its full of 100's of drunk rugby boys) and posts by the managers mates we can see a pattern emerging.
I have witnessed this pattern first hand.
Was in the garden with my brother when a fight broke out a few tables away, wasnt going to intervine until the barman who was trying to split it up started to get a kicking. We went over (only ones in a full pub garden) and started pulling people off and picked up the barman. Fair bit of shouting and swearing then calmed down as the scumbags walked off. While in the process off asking the barman if he was Ok, I was punched in the back of the head. Turning round I'm confronted by the manager who is s*itfaced (its 6pm on a saturday) and has to be dragged off me by the barman. Police have turned up by this point, manager, now joined by his equally obnoxious wife, is calling me every name you can imagine and has to be led away by the old bill. I can understand he maybe caught the wrong end of it but after his staff and other punters explaining we were only protecting his staff his appology was, and i quote, 'your still a ****, **** off your barred'. Saw him in another pub few days later and he had no memory it. I have never been back and never will until he leaves but have had to witness his drunken ravings in other pubs, mainly about rugby and mainly because people dont share the same narrow minded opinions as him. Oh and the brief impression i can remember of the place was the poor tasting beer and miserable staff.
AVOID!

The Eel Pie, Twickenham

Was a nice, locals boozer, run well by Alan and Claire. Have to agree with previous posts, lost its appeal. Whats wrong with pub management? Not just here but all over. If its not broken don't fix it. Staff were unmotivated and selection of beer 'upgraded' to overpriced european ones. Shame.

21 Sep 2011 08:22

The Fox, Twickenham

The Fox has closed for a much needed restoration. This was a great pub with a very friendly atmosphere and varied clientele, it was what pub means, public house, open to everyone. Good beer, good food, good staff. I really hope when it reopens it keeps the feel of a boozer. The company running also run the Royal Oak and Sussex Arms so have faith they know what they are doing.
8/10, was head and shoulders above most of the pubs in Twickenham.
