The George Payne, Hove

Very pleasant pub right in the heart of Poets' Corner. Good range of beer, really tasty food, friendly staff. What's not to like?

The Stoneham, Hove

Recent menu changes have made visiting this pub an extremely disappointing experience. The pizza menu used to, until very recently, be really varied and reasonably priced however, within the last month or so the prices for pretty much everything have increased by about £2. I mean £12 for a vege burger and chips?! The pint of Brakspear oxford gold I had was dull and tasteless. I doubt we'll be back. Shame.

The Shakespeare's Head, Brighton

Totally agree with review below. Great range of beers, mainly local which is brilliant, music is always excellent, friendly bar staff and the the sausage and mash is out of this world. Go there.

The Poets Corner, Hove

Have been back to the Poet's a few times in the last year or so. while I have been a bit disappointed with the lack of enthusiasm from the landlord and the fact that twice in the space of a couple of months the Harveys Old had run out by 7.30pm (come on this is a Harveys pub!) it is actually the best pub in Hove apart from the Neptune, although drinks are more expensive here. A little more variety in beers on the pumps (some seasonal Harveys would be great) and a smile from staff from time to time would improve this place no end.

Prestonville Arms, Brighton

Lovely decor, floorboards, old framed pictures, posters, adverts etc.... Landlord seems quite friendly and the food is pretty tasty too. Shame it's owned by Fullers though as the beers are quite boring and very rarely change. Shame about the current choice of bar staff too. A smile costs nothing. Might try the Shakespeare's next time.

The Poets Corner, Hove

Had never been into this pub when it was called The Eclipse but we thought we'd give it a go when we moved back into the area in September 2010. We were really impressed with the atmosphere, the music, the selection of ales and the service. The landlord at the time I believe was a young lad named Lee who always seemed to have a smile on his face. we even popped in for a couple on new year's eve and enjoyed some live music.
Then a few months ago we stopped in again and things were/are very different. Lee has gone and has been replaced by an Irish landlord who I've yet to see crack a smile. Surely you shouldn't feel like you're putting someone out by asking them to serve you? Gone was the good music, replaced with MOR country and western turned down so quietly that you have to whisper in order to keep your conversation to yourself!
This is still a pleasant enough pub but it has the potential to be so much better. Shame.

Connaught, Hove

Went to the Connaught to meet some friends back in May. Although the pub clearly looks a lot better since it has been refurbished I found there to be a distict lack of atmosphere. It has something of the wanky wine-bar feel to. The whole place seemed geared much more towards food than drinks and when I asked for a taste of one of the ales they had on I was reluctantly given a tiny thimble-full by the barmaid. The ale I ended up buying cost 4 a pint.......obscene by anyone's standards. We didn't try the food although judging by how busy it was in there it must be pretty good. However we will not be back here for drinks even though it's just down the road.

The Lion And Lobster, Brighton

I'm amazed that this beauty of a pub doesn't have a higher average rating. All the comments I've read seem very positive and I echo them all. This pub is ace. The layout, the atmosphere, the staff....all great. Definitely one of the best in Brighton by far. We popped in by chance one Sunday eveing as we were passing and witnessed an 80-yr-old lady singing with a live jazz band.....unforgettable!

The Prince Arthur, Brighton

(Please note this review is from the one and only time we went to the Prince Arthur in Sept 2009) Went in for a drink after skating for a couple of hours on the sea-front. When I finally managed to get the attention of the bloke behind the bar away from a loud shoot-em-up xbox game he was busy playing on the big screen I asked if I could have a pint of water as I was very quite dehydrated. He refused to give me a full pint, saying "people never drink a whole pint and we're on a water meter." I downed the half pint that he'd generously given me and then asked for a refill. Not to be akward but because I was very thirsty.
We ordered a couple of pints and sat down to drink them. The atmosphere was shit, we were made to feel unwelcome from start to finish. I would not recommend this place to anyone and have never been back. I hope things have changed since 2009.

The Angel Inn, Leeds

I love the Angel Inn. Since moving to Leeds in December 2009 we have returned to the several times at various times of the day and days of the week. The atmosphere is always good, there is a great mix of people (tattooed kids and old boy regulars side by side) and the prices....what more can you say? 1.47 for a pint of Alpine Ale, 2.20 for Wheat beer....You can't argue with that. We found the Angel quite by accident and had never heard of Sam Smith's pubs/breweries before. When I saw the price list behind the bar I thought they were prices for half pints and, even when I had been served and was sipping it, couldn't quite believe that my pint had cost 1.47! The cheapest pint I have ever bought and tasty too!

We will continue to go back to The Angel for as long as we live in Leeds. Nice crowd, great prices and good atmosphere.
(Could do with some music upstairs though!)
