The Rising Sun, Tottenham Court Road

This place has recently been refurbed and rebranded. I hadn't been in here before but it's certaily nice now. Big and clean with great seats to relax on. Food was good and staff were pleasant. Fine place for a quiet drink, sunday lunch or the start/middle of a larger evening.

The Tattershall Castle, Embankment

Being on a boat you do feel a little drunk before you even start drinking. Though ironically after a few drinks you stop noticing. I thought the place was pretty good looking since the refurb, everything fresh and clean still. As a pub this is fine - food is good, drinks are drinks. The club is quite small and cheesy, which is fine if that's all your after, though it does get very hot when busy. Worth a visit for one of the best views in London to have a drink to.

Goose, Bloomsbury

Well it feels like a Wetherspooons because it's also a chain pub in pretty much the same vein. Cheap beer and food of decent quality. You know what you're getting when you walk in, if you want atmosphere or fine cuisine there are plenty of other places. If you just want a lazy sunday beer/lunch then it's perfectly acceptable.

The London Pub, Bloomsbury

Can't find a lot I disagree with in previous reviews. It seems touristy, it's big though somehow feels cramped. It's not hideous or really worth avoiding if you just want a quick drink, but you wouldn't choose to go there either.

Light Bar, Shoreditch

Big bar which looks pretty good in that industrial way, though when I was there it wasn't that busy so it looked a bit bare, but when rammed I doubt that would matter. Good bouncers (friendly but efficient, didn't go nazi about one of the party who looked a bit young and didn't have id). Big outside area. Should be docked marks just for having toilet attendants (remind me why I should pay to have someone watch me urinate?), but otherwise couldn't complain.

Industry, Shoreditch

Lovely. Great atmosphere, fabulous design, good food and drink. Toilets not quite as good as you'd hope (they never are though..?), but otherwise a great bar.

The Broadgate Exchange, Broadgate

Really does not deserve such a low rating. It would be nice for it to be refurbed, but it's not tatty. Yep, it's pricey, but it's in the middle of the city so it's going to be. But it's a LOT cheaper than local places such as Corney & Barrow and no where near as pretentious. It's a perfectly decent pub and given that it's usually very busy there must be a lot of people who think so.

The Sussex, Covent Garden

Don't know what TheGP is going on about with "Theme Pub hell". It's part of a chain, so what, so are most of the bars in the local area. Inside it's pretty subtle and pleasant. The food and drink are ok (though, yes, west end prices, you are next to Leicester Square!). As mentioned below, it can be a bit crowded on Fri/Sat nights due it's location. But otherwise it's fine. And if you get next to a window it's a really good place to watch the masses of people wandering about outside.

The Marlborough Arms, Tottenham Court Road

Pub has recently been refurbished and looks a LOT nicer than it did, much cleaner and brighter, even improving the toilets. (Could still do with some air con for the summer / to get rid of smoke.) As other reviewers have suggested, this is not a place for a hot date. But if you just want somewhere to relax with friends, have cheap drinks (very cheap compared to the west-end prices a short distance away) and play pool then this is ideal.

Ye Three Lords, Aldgate

I don't really get the appeal of this place. I asuume it's the quality of the beer, which I can't really comment on. Otherwise it's a bit dingy and old and seems to be full of older men leering at any women who walk in. If you want a pub the The Peacock down the street is better.

The Peacock, Tower Hill

A pub, not a bar. Recently refurbished. Pool table is a bonus. Good bar staff, really good place for a post-work drink.

The Fine Line, Tower Hill

Really nice looking bar (apart from upstarirs which is a bit suspect). Might seem a bit quiet upstairs, but downstairs is much nicer and usually busier. If you've got the money (it's expensive even for the city) then it's a nice place to relax after work.

Bar 38, Aldgate

Ok, it's not the best bar in the world (it's a chain bar - what do you expect?) but it's really not bad. It's recently has a refurb and new menu. The food is good the drinks are cheap and it looks pretty nice. That it's full of young drunk people on a friday is not a shock, but I'd rather go there than go somewhere where I get to pay double for the same quality of drinks and listen to old drunk suits shout about how much money they made that week (and I'm not 'back office staff').
