The Garland, Redhill

Like a country pub parachuted into town, the Garland is difficult to beat as Redhill's top pub (although the White Lion at the top of the hill is giving it a good go). Consistently excellent ales - pretty much the full Harveys' range - with a full bottled selection as well.

The Garibaldi, Redhill

Friendly hillside pub that fills up with rugby or football on TV but with a happy, non-obnoxious crowd so a great place to watch a game. Pilgrim Progress seems to be a regular ale and very good it is too.

The White Lion, Redhill

Excellent beer choice for a GK pub, and all ales very well kept. Thai food comes highly recommended too, and the regulars, staff and management are all exceptionally friendly. Baffled as to why this pub doesn't make it into the Good Beer Guide, but as a result it remains Redhill's best kept secret!

The Home Cottage, Redhill

Down out like a gastro pub but very pleasant looking inside - if that's what it takes to keep a pub alive, then so be it. Decent choice of ales, including Wells & Young seasonals.

The Sun, Redhill

Clientele can be a little rough around the edges at times, but the ale quality is consistently good (and far better than most Wetherspoons I've been in). Seems to be a little quieter on weekend evenings now that Redhill's nightclub has closed.

The Jolly Brickmakers, Redhill

Good, honest local pub, yet still very welcoming to strangers (like us). Only three ales (Brakspear bitter, Ringwood 49er plus the monthly Brakspear guest ale), but very well kept and served by a very knowledgeable barman. Would go in here more regularly if I lived nearby.

The Duke of Devonshire, Eastbourne

Very reminiscent of a Wetherspoons, with a crowd of enthusiastic middle-aged drinkers already well into the swing of things at midday on a Saturday. Cheap food and smiling staff, but not overly impressed with the ale choice (Marstons EPA, St Austell Tribute and one other).

London and County, Eastbourne

Less ale choice than many other Wetherspoons (albeit on a par with the Cornfield Garage around the corner). Busy with a pre-club crowd on a Friday evening and mobbed with shoppers on a Sat lunchtime. Much of a muchness.

The Dolphin, Eastbourne

As previously stated, this pub is on the expensive side for Eastbourne, but is very nicely laid out and the staff are exceptionally friendly. Dark Star Hophead in good nick, with Harveys Sussex Best and one other (can't remember - not that exciting) also on offer.

Dewdrop Inn, Eastbourne

Walked in on a busy Friday night to find a disco in full swing and a younger than expected (25-ish) crowd. We only stayed for one (loud music not really our thing), but we weren't made to feel unwelcome and the beer was fine. Seems like it may well be different depending on the time/day of the week, but that's no bad thing and always good to see a pub busy and successful.

The Eagle, Eastbourne

My favourite pub in Eastbourne (of the 10 or so I've been into as an occasional tourist) - very relaxed atmosphere with a somewhat Bohemian approach to decor. The draught ales were all in excellent condition - we found it difficult to choose between Dark Star Partridge Best, Dark Star Black Coffee Pilsner (a seasonal guest - get it while you can!) and Rother Valley Hoppers Ale, so had to keep rotating our choice just to be sure! The two rows of pump clips around the ceiling are testimony to how many guest ales are stocked. All of the bar staff were great without exception - always serving in turn, very friendly and even offering a choice between "straight glass or handle".

The pool table is either free or 50p a game (depending on when you're in), and I'm led to believe there's even a roof terrace garden (not that we were venturing out there in February!). Football is also shown on multiple small screens plus a huge projector, and a real fire was crackling away (with candles on all tables), so very cosy and welcoming. All in all, a superb pub and all you could really ask for!

The Selden Arms, Worthing

Absolute gem of a small backstreet local, stocking 6 ales on hand pull - Dark Star Hophead as a regular and five ever-changing guests (at least one of which will be a dark beer such as a mild, porter or stout). A blackboard to the left of the bar advertises what's conditioning in the cellar, and the wall opposite that has a tally count of the different beers served. The beer festival on the last weekend of January is always popular, but well worth squeezing in for.

The Buccaneer, Eastbourne

Very ornate exterior from late 1800s, leading into a spacious and incredibly friendly pub. The barman was very knowledgeable about the Sussex beer scene and happy to chat about beers past, present and future - sharing a printed tasting notes guide that gets updated regularly. Both the Buccaneer Ale and the Harveys Sussex Best were in excellent condition, and we were assured that all 5 of the pumps are in use during busier months.
