The Wheatsheaf, Borough

My friend had to twist my arm to return to the Wheatsheaf after I gave up on it back in 2004. I'm glad he did. Every beer I sampled was in good condition and the atmosphere of old seemed to have returned. The perfect place to escape the cold.

The George Canning, Denmark Hill

London Pride was served well. Food is a mixed bag: my steak sandwich was excellent but one of my companions' had a burnt burger. Board games and a pleasant atmosphere made me feel like I could spend the rest of the afternoon here but unfortunately we had to return to work (well, by 'work', obviously I mean procrastinating and writing this review). (6/10)

The Fox on the Hill, Denmark Hill

I was initially very dubious of visiting the Fox on the Hill when I heard that it was a Wetherspoon's (well, they do invite comparison with McDonald's) but it wasn't too bad. The age of the building even manages to resist complete 'wetherspoonification'. We didn't wait long to be served (a Friday lunchtime) but those following us others did as our barmaid took her time and insisted on repeating everything back to us twcie - once at the point of ordering and once at the point of payment. The interesting looking range of beers went untried as I'd noticed that everyone in the pub was drinking lager. (5/10)

The Sun and Doves, Camberwell

Withnail - I don't know if they keep an eye on the reviews here but they certainly do now have table service outside (and very attentive it was too). Great beer garden. I've taken advantage of the good weather this week and had a business lunch there on Tuesday and the food was great (trout, caesar salad and some meaty pasta thing). Tagged along with a group from the Institute of Psychiatry today and it was pretty good for a quick sandwich although one girl's bruscetta was burnt. Our waitress was superb and very friendly - certainly wouldn't be out of place at Belvedere or Mirabelle (probably dining rather than serving :-)

The Horseshoe Inn, London Bridge

There are three pubs in the London Bridge area that stand out from the rest:
If you want to stand for most of the night and eat expensive but good gastropub food - go to the Garrison.
If you want to stand and drink good real ales - go to the Market Porter.
If you want to get a seat (even on a Friday night), drink OK but unadventurous real ales, play a game of darts and have a chat with you mates, watch a bit of sport on the big screen tv... you can do it here. Bigger than it looks from the outside and most of the bar staff are friendly, too.

The Island Queen, Islington

Very good pub near the canal and the buzz of Islington. Good food and 3 well-kept real ales (Tim Taylor's Landlord, Fuller's Jack Frost and Adnams' Bitter the last time I pooped in, but varies). Can get very busy at the weekend, but a great place for a meal and a couple of pints on a weekday evening.
