Square Brewery, Petersfield

Decent beer and good jazz on a Sunday lunchtime, worth another visit when I'm in the area.

St James Tavern, Piccadilly

popped in on the way to the tube as it was the nearest pub, served it's purpose but don't specially need to go back again.

The Red Lion, Soho

Had a quick one in here before heading to the Blues Bar across the street ,standard Samuel Smith's boozer - you either like them or you don't.

The Blues Bar, Soho

Very pleasant evening in here, strong lager, great music, can get busy later on...

The Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Portsmouth

Had a beer and burger deal for 3.99, burger was cold, sent it back, problem dealt with straight away, whole meal replaced. Pint of Ruddles Best fine. Golden rule with any Wetherspoons pub - if you're not satisfied, complain immediately and they'll do what they can to resolve complaint as they're concerned with maintaining a good reputation !

The Lady Hamilton, Portsmouth

Worth coming here for the roast dinners, good service and big portions.

Bar 38, Portsmouth

Desperately bad, dreadful tasteless lager, 80% men to 20% women, terrible music, a reminder of why it hasn't been on the "must go there for a drink" list for about 10 years !

The Invincible, Portsmouth

Had a pretty reasonable steak & ale pie in here last week, washed down with a lunchtime half, worth coming back for.

The Dolphin, Portsmouth

Came here a couple of weeks ago for a birthday dinner, drank Guinness as ale not too good, shame as it used to be ok, but the meal (party of 12) was excellent so overall a really good evening, sort the ale out and we'll be back.

Old House at Home, Milton

went here recently, pretty reasonable guest beer @ 2.50

The Barley Mow, Southsea

Proper pub, cosy, good for putting the world to rights over a foaming pint

6 May 2011 19:11

The White Swan, Portsmouth

good selection of Oakleaf beers in here, very reasonable Wetherspoon prices, pleasant staff...

6 May 2011 19:08

The Old Customs House, Portsmouth

Had quite a pleasant pint of Spring Sprinter in here after bad experiences at Slug & Lettuce and All Bar One.

6 May 2011 19:07

Ship Anson, Portsmouth

Fairly good standard Greene King, watched the world go by outside the front with a reasonable pint of I.P.A.

The Phoenix, Southsea

Great pub, the beer is well-kept, the atmosphere is localish without being unfriendly, and you can find yourself playing "spot the celeb" on the amazing collection of theatrical posters in the lounge bar.

The Royal Oak, Langstone

Went on a relatively quiet Friday afternoon, had a decent pint of Hardy & Hanson's Old Trip which blended very nicely with the cheese on my well-presented ploughman's lunch. My dining partners had the sausages and mash which looked excellent, and the slow-cooked duck leg with wild rice which was passable. Nice-looking pub, overall a pleasant experience ; am concerned to read the previous posters' comments about service during busy periods, so probably best to go there outside peak times.

The Fawcett Inn, Southsea

Under new management, saw a fun Irish-style band there on St Patrick's night last week, very different to how it was in here a year ago, get the impression the new landlords are trying to change this place for the better, one to keep an eye on...

The Duke of Devonshire, Southsea

Proper locals pub for those disillusioned by modern chain pubs, pleasant atmosphere and a reasonable pint, will add it to my list of pubs to visit on the Albert Rd run.

The Wine Vaults, Southsea

Doesn't have quite the same character it used to before it was bought by Fullers, however the draught Bengal Lancer was very more-ish when I visited the other night. Agree with the previous poster who stated that it tends to rely on its old reputation and punters who have affection for it. The other Mike Hughes establishments on Albert Rd are too similar to the original pre-Fullers Wine Vaults concept, and therefore too similar to each other !
Still, not a bad boozer, though...

The Hole In The Wall, Waterloo

A welcome oasis of serious beer drinking before you catch your train...oh whoops, there it goes...better catch the next one...better have another pint while I'm waiting, time can pass quite easily in here !

16 Feb 2011 20:37

The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

Great choice of beers, usually something new to try whenever I go in...

16 Feb 2011 20:34

Leopold Tavern, Southsea

Good pint of Oakleaf Hole-Hearted in here, will be back

16 Feb 2011 20:32

The Harp, Covent Garden

Well-deserved accolade ! Have always had decent beer in here, will visit next time I'm in the area, keep up the good work !

The Sir Loin Of Beef, Southsea

Went in on a busy Sunday lunchtime, listened to a very accomplished Jazz trio with a great female singer, am told this happens once a month in here. Had a couple of decent pints of Suthwick Skew bitter. Good choice of ales as befits a free house, and unusually, no Guinness. Recommended if you're having a beer-spotter kind of day and want to try lots of different ales.

The Florence Arms, Southsea

Have been using The Florence regularly for many years now, the cider menu is a definite USP. Beware the short term memory loss brought on by indulging in too many items from the cider menu ! Still a great pub.

25 Jan 2011 15:45

The King Street Tavern, Southsea

Very pleasant, love Wadworths beer, agree that it's become a little more gentrified since its days as The Diamond, but still good.

25 Jan 2011 15:43

The Fifth Hants Volunteer Arms, Southsea

Doormen on a Sunday evening ? Lipstick round the rim of my pint glass ? Used to go in here quite a bit, but will probably not go in very often, it's busy but at the cost of being the decent boozer it used to be.

25 Jan 2011 15:39

De Hems, Soho

One of my favourite boozers in London (maybe the world), atmosphere, selection of beers, great for people watching outside, a gem of Soho

Shenanigans, Southsea

This is a small Irish style bar/cafe in central Southsea, the staff were welcoming, and the breakfasts incredible ! I went for the Scottish breakfast and, being 2.30 p.m., a necessary pint of Guinness. Was told real ale hasn't been a big seller for them so they don't stock any, but when the breakfasts are this good, it's nice to wash it down with a drop of the black stuff, especially when it's as good as this. As I said, the Scottish breakfast was huge (eggs, bacon, Lorne sausage, haggis, tomatoes, potato cake, beans, toast) and delicious. A great place to feel human again the morning after the night before, would like to visit in the evening to see what it's like.

16 Oct 2010 12:15

Sheffield Tap, Sheffield

A gem...great selection of beers, friendly and knowledgeable staff, pleasant atmosphere, being on the station platform there's a bit of Brief Encounter in the air !

16 Oct 2010 11:55

The RMA Tavern, Eastney

A great pub, busy on live music nights, went there last night and saw a wonderful DJ spinning retro-rock vinyl 45's, great fun ! Good selection of Fullers/Gales beers, plenty of choice on the spirit front, friendly bar staff. Would definitely go again.
