Pacific Bar, Stamford Brook

Became the Duchess of Cambridge

The Duchess of Cambridge, Stamford Brook

The Duchess is back. Reopened about a week ago. New management, new décor, new food (hooray). Emphasis on food but a good selection of real ales & trendy lagers too.
Dropped in early evening on its second day and surprised how many people were there. Long may it last.

Thatched House, Hammersmith

New name - The Butchers Hook
Still vaguely publike but food is overwhelmingly the priority. There's another branch of the same outfit by Chelsea FC.
Uncertain if Young's still own the place.
New licensee Gus, apparently a Kiwi, hopefully will do as well as fellow countryman the excellent Tom Kavanaugh did ten years ago.

The Andover Arms, Hammersmith

This place is a gem, tucked away on the fringe of Brackenbury Village in Hammersmith it has such a welcoming feel to it. The real ales, usually a good assortment of Fullers output, always seems to be in exceptionally good nick. Food is plentiful, well-cooked and a fair price, not cheap, fair. Unusally for many Fullers pubs this one doesn't feel like a restaurant that happens to sell beer. One of my London top 10. Hurdlers, comment below, will be pleased to know Tom's back from his hols and hasn't, in my presence, mentioned the Rugby World Cup once.

The Bull's Head, Barnes

I stopped by the Bull's Head a couple of weeks ago. The first time for a couple of years or more. Nothing much has changed except the prices are higher and the Thai grub wasn't available. Has it gone?. The staff were unbelievable, milsonman and lisalovelyfish were treated well! Surely Young's has some sort of selection process that involves staff being positively service-minded and customer oriented. Maybe not.

Thatched House, Hammersmith

Since Young's took back the license late last summer this pub has really gone downhill. No atmosphere in the bar, real ales a bit suspect at times, and there is enormous scope for getting the food back to the standard it used to be; or lower the prices. Not likely somehow.

The Red Shoot Inn, Linwood

Haven't been here for about 15 years despite being relatively local. Home brewed beer delicious (tried New Forest Gold and Tommy Tipplers?) if a bit smokey for some tastes. Had a very decent meal too, large helpings, good value. Efficiently run by a very good team who know what they're doing. The gaming machines and piped music are an unfortunate addition. Given where it is the Red Shoot Inn's hugely popular with walkers, campers, cyclists and other forms of grockle nevertheless it was a very pleasant return to an old friend.

The Goose, Holborn

Wandered in here last Wednesday, first time for years, and knocked out by the range of beers. Had a very decent pint of Wadworth's Henry's IPA. Staff friendly & efficient. Didn't try any food. Recent refurbishment looks good.

The Princess Louise, Holborn

I've been going to this pub for over 30 years and never thought to look at the comments on BITE before now and am gobsmacked. Being absolutely truthful I stopped going after Sam Smith's took it over because I just can't stand their beer. In the 70s and early 80s I'd pass any number of pubs for a proper pint of Sam Smiths now they sell this instant hang-over inducing keg bitter at incredibly low prices. And not even Guinness to relieve the awfulness. How are they able to sell beer so cheaply, obviously it must be made even more cheaply; I wonder where the ingredients come from. Yes, I like real ale and the PL was a mecca for it and all the wonderful make-overs in the world won't induce me back.

The Eagle, Shepherds Bush

This is no longer a pub.
However it is selling some decent real ales that aren't going off.
Food was pretty good, well the kedgeree needed more salt and a lot less cream but the pork belly sandwich was really good.
Long gone are the days when you could get a pub lunch for under a fiver so pleasantly surprised at seeing most items around 7-8, instead of the 12-15 that seems the norm - roll on the recession eh. And this isn't even a pub either.
Latest revamp gets away from the dingy shadows of the last setup and is colourful. It's been done well.

Princess Victoria, Shepherds Bush

A tremendous make-over for one of the scuzziest & scariest pubs in the area. Plenty of comfortable seating. A very popular resurrection and could well take trade away from the nearby Thatched House.

Couple of real ales (Tim Taylors Landlord & Fullers London Pride)on pump. Assorted lagers.

Enormous wine list in price range 15-45 max. One of the managers was a sommelier and has put his mark on the place. One might wonder, given it's location, how the Princess Vic expects not only to sell such a wide selection of wine but also whether it's economically viable to keep stocked up with maybe only 2 or 3 bottles to hand of some items.

Menu is just the right size, portions reasonable, though quality was hit and miss, some things prepared extremely well others not so well.

Staff, as others have said are very good. Great attitude.

The Star and Garter, Soho

Trying to find out if this place opens on Saturdays but the phone number is dead. Anyone know?

The Red Lion, Barnes

If only more Starbucks were like this one.

Have Fullers no idea what a pub is?

The Eagle, Shepherds Bush

I'd heard the place had been done up and so ventured in. Excellent range of beers including my favourite Dutch draught De Konick. Also a weissbeer and other continentel European lagers on draught. Only Adnams on in the real ale line and beginning to go off.

Friendly staff.

Big garden at the back that would benefit from screening the houses behind in some neighbour-friendly way. The ants are a problem.

Thatched House, Hammersmith

A heaving zoo of people paying well over the odds for food that has been rushed in it's preparation.

Great staff who are rushed off their feet these days.

The usual high standards of Youngs' ales and maintenance of them seems to be slipping here in the last few weeks.

Like many places today you might find that English is not fully understood by all the staff.

The Eddystone Inn, Heybrook Bay

Fantastic location, great sun deck, well kept real ale.

Food pretty good, as standard pub fare goes, large portions, average prices. Don't expect any cordon bleu or fusion stuff here.

No disabled access that I could find.

Children are not allowed in the bar area at all - a big plus in my book - but are allowed in the separate restaurant area.

Apart from the bar the whole place needs modernising/refurbishing urgently.
