The Consortium, Bournemouth

The Consortium and Kukui have both gone from this location, it is now called 'Lola Lo' apparently. A Tiki bar and club with cocktails, tiki booths, DJs and beats.

Bar Vin, Bournemouth

No longer Bar Vin or Orange Rooms. Changed to Sherbet (which I've seen with huuuuge queues outside on weekend nights).

The Winchester, Bournemouth

Impressive old building, quite luxurious decor. A lot of the events held here are not to my taste, and can get unpleasantly busy. But have really enjoyed the burlesque/vaudeville nights, masquerade balls, speakeasys, electro swing, rock bands, poetry, art, dollyrocker etc nights. Nice touches here and there too, cupcakes for sale or a hat-swap table.

Fruit, Bournemouth

Now called Bar Xtreme, surf style with graffiti decor :)

The Inferno, Bournemouth

Student central! Like walking into a scene from Hollyoaks or something. Cheap, and busy. Generally what you'd expect.

Jimmys Bar and Brasserie, Bournemouth

This is now an absolutely gorgeous Thai tapas restaurant called Koh (they have another Koh restaurant in Boscombe than has won awards). Highly recommended. The Boscombe branch also does take- away, not sure if this one does too.

Sixty Million Postcards, Bournemouth

Arty, studenty, wouldn't look out of place in Camden. Love the mismatched decor and the alternative music played over the speakers during the day. And the carousel horse above the door!

O'Neills, Bournemouth

Great open mic nights on Tuesdays. Dingy and miserable during the day, comes to life in the evenings.

Urban Beach Hotel, Boscombe

Trendy, modern boutique hotel with bar/restaurant open to the public, located between the high street and the sea front. Pretty pricey, but the quality of both the food and the drinks is spot on. Great vegetarian selections too. It's really pleasant to sit outside in the summer when it gets dark, they provide blankets in the wooden seating area to snuggle up in. A positive experience :)

The Christopher Creeke , Bournemouth

Exactly the same as every other Wetherspoons/Lloyds in the whole country. There are already far too many in the Bournemouth area, why do we need more? Sadly this generic bland place has replaced one of my favourite places to go. Bring back The Gander! It had life and character and dirty music, or at least The Metropole with it's live music, arts exhibitions and jamming sessions. What a waste of a great location. In a few years every street will be filled with nothing but Wetherspoons and Tescos and everything and everyone will look the same. Sad times.

The Branksome Arms, Bournemouth

Completely over the top furnishings and gaudy decor, I love it, right up my street! I find the camp music too loud indoors though, so spend time in the lovely spacious garden out the back. Very pretty.

The Bermuda Triangle, Parkstone

I love this place! Not easy for me to get to from where I live, but worth making the trip definitely. Small, cramped, you trip over peoples legs and dogs, get lost round corners, and feel like you're in some other reality, amazing! Give it a try...

Seabourne, Pokesdown

Came in for a quick half while waiting for a train (as is opposite Pokesdown station), not normally the sort of pub I'd go to. Now I know why... one side is nothing but a gigantic screen set up for sports and had lager louts playing Wii sports on it. The other side had miserable grumpy people looking at me like I am a hideous alien because I dye my hair and wear dark makeup. Next time I'll wait on the platform in the cold!

Deacons, Boscombe

Deacons closed down, The Ragged Cat closed down. Good riddance! Go to the Cellar Bar (opposite) instead.

The Cellar Bar, Boscombe

A beautifuly quirky place to have a quiet drink during the day in the garden, eat a DeliciouS meal in the upstairs art deco Chaplins, or see fantastic live music in the buzzing atmosphere of the evenings for free. I first came to this bar a few years ago and since then have met so many wonderful interesting people here. The locals are full of character, just like the surroundings, and are always lots of fun. I also met my partner of two years here at a 1920s themed party night, so have many fond memories of our first dates going to the open mic nights here or the jazz nights there used to be.
As a fan of all things a bit different, this bar appeals to my love of vintage decor (upstairs), and the traditional old pub 'with a gothic twist' look (downstairs- furnished with bits from an old church). And the clientele/staff are very accepting of all types of people, it's not unusual to see many alternative people like myself there in the evenings, and apart from the occasional a**hole that you get wherever, people are nothing but complimetary about the way myself and my friends look. Also, in reply to one of the previous comments, no this is not a disguised gay bar, at one point there were more than one gay members of staff, but if this is a problem then seriously I recommend sticking to Wetherspoons/Lloyds/other generic chain pub with no atmosphere or integrity. Lol.
Yes, the Boscombe surroundings can be a bit dodgy, the reputation of the area is one of poverty and recovering drug addicts, but the pub itself is well maintained, and has strict policies about no drugs or violence whatsoever. The security employed at weekends keep out troublemakers, and the lack of televised sports on the premises generally keep out other potential idiots.
The best place to go in Bournemouth, long live independant drinking establishments!
