The Magazine Hotel, Wallasey

Beer of the highest quality, including Bass, and a great river view, plenty of space inside. Only 50 yards from the coastal path but difficult to spot, so you need to look out for the path with derelict land on the right (or use GPS).

The Everyman Bistro, Liverpool

The rebuilding of The Everyman is finished and there is a Bistro there, but as it's a new building with different management the previous reviews have no relevance. In this area I recommend The Belvedere and The Caledonia for a quiet pint, and The Clove Hitch for a big meal with beer.

The Lord Mountbatten, Congleton

Quiet, old-fashioned boozer with friendly landlord and interesting beers in excellent condition. I've only visited on Sunday evenings so I can't say how busy it is on more popular days, but it seems more popular than The Beartown Tap, and the leisure centre (seriously, a great bar) doesn't open Sunday evening.

Blue Bell, Warrington

Mid-sized pub (all the building in the photo above is the pub) with 3 cask ales from major breweries, usually in acceptable condition at £2.50. Large range of basic pub food. Very close to train and bus stations and in the main shopping street.

Apart from the staff not knowing what a pint is (try filling the pint glass) there's nothing wrong with the place, but bland beer in an empty pub isn't much of a reason to visit, especially in a town with so many other options.

Cross Keys, Liverpool

Re-opened after a short closure, now managed by Sean and Michael of The Lion Tavern.

Mostly a daytime pub for the pie and pint lunch crowd, good food, 3 free of tie handpumps promised, recent redecoration somewhat overbearing, garden, large private room. Open in evening but shuts if no customers present. Closed weekends. Some of this may change as Sean and Michael assess the pub.

Difficult to find, between Old Hall Street and Bixteth, not visible from main roads.

Red Lion, Marsworth

Lovely pub a long way down a quiet road. Despite the photo above there is a building with comfortable rooms and a good selection of esoteric beers. Quiet on a Saturday night, but Marsworth is hardly twinned with Gomorrah.

The Railway, Liverpool

Very large very bland office workers pub. Good quality refurb of a dump, but never any unusual beers, condition can vary as well. Has habit of closing early, but this shouldn't be a problem for you as you can see the recommended alternative in several reviews below.

Ned Kellys, Liverpool

The picture at the top of the page is current, the reviews refer to its previous incarnation. Making an effort with cask ale I'm told, will call in and post a review soon.

The Lady of Mann, Liverpool

While it isn't the best pub in the Dale Street area, the reviews below are very unfair. There's usually 2 guest beers (as I don't like Okell's except the IPA this is vital for me), the beer quality is good and the staff are pleasant enough when not run off their feet on busy Summer evenings. Far superior to Rigby's, which has all the charm and sociability of a Wetherspoon's without the cheap beer.
Bland interior, closes early Sunday, across the courtyard behind Rigby's.

The Black Horse, Elton

Under new management, so all previous reviews now historic value only. Web site a mess, with many sections generating errors, but all the reviews seem to be about the food which tell me what they've done. Unable to warn people they were closed earlier this year, so attitude is a local restaurant for local people. I gave this (as Paul Ove Walldner) a great review, and it's a shame that the owner has gone, my rating is not based on a new visit but to counter my previous rating which is now invalid, and their utter failure to cater for anyone outside the village.
