Hart & Spool, Borehamwood

Snarling_Mallard is spot on and this place has not improved since his visit.

Only redeeming feature is Wetherspoons prices. Otherwise the manager and area manager ought to be sacked. Uninterested staff, filthy and unmaintained toilets. The bar area always looks like its been ransacked.

The Wishing Well, Borehamwood

Probably the most comfortable pub in Borehamwood, decently furnished with a few television so that everyone can watch their favourite sport channel.

Standard faux Irish pub with friendly Polish servers and Irish manager.

Little for the real ale drinker, but a frsh pint of Stella!

The Crown, Borehamwood

Reckoned by some to be the best pub in Borehamwood. This really is damning with faint praise. Large drinking emporium designed to appeal to the football viewing / pool playing sector. Indifferent food served in generous quantities. The operator's (Barracuda?) cider festival redeemed the place by offering Green Goblin...but suspect little to appeal to the real ale drinker.

Woods at Borehamwood, Borehamwood

I hate to be cruel, but one of the benefits of the recession seems to be that places like this close. By the boarding up, it looks like the bank manager put this place out of its misery.

The Green Dragon, Barnet

Very pleasant pub cum restaurant. I think they like to have separate eating and drink areas but except at busy times I think you can eat anywhere or drink anywhere. Conservatory overlooks a cornfield and there's a patio for smokers / summer evenings.

Good range of real ales. Stella for me. Also, when eating a good range of well-priced wines by the glass and even more by the bottle. Set price menu offers particularly good value.

Service can be a bit disorganised but is friendly and willing.

For a relaxed evening in pleasant surroundings go there!

The Crooked Billet, Colney Heath

Came here again having been unable to get any form of service at the Cock.

What a difference. Friendly place, friendly barmaid. Landlord helpful. Number of family groups out in the garden enjoying the evening sunshine.

Unfortunately, kitchen shut, so just had to drink! Only negative wsa no sign that I could see that described the kitchen opening hours. Menu was based on the pub usuuals.
Noticed a number of tables with bottles of wine (is there a special offer or is it that sort of village?). Excellent range of real ales, even an old lager drinker like me was tempted!

The Cock, Colney Heath

With the pub opposite closed, I'd have thought they'd take that as warning of the current situation in the licenced trade. Plainly not. Went in the other evening, and waited for the barman / landlord to finish serving customers in the other bar. He even came through to the bar I was in to get a bottle. On finishing serving the other customers he sat down on his stool with his back to me. I coughed to try to gain his attention. No response.

Unsurprisingly I walked out. Obviously this is a drinking club for locals only.

The Godolphin Arms, Marazion

Patently designed to part the tourist from their hard-earned/scrounged, the views over to St Michael's Mount are everything. With few customers in when I arrived, the staff were more interested in talking about their relationships with their boy/girl friends.

A standard of range of St Austell supplied ales.

There are better pubs in Marazion. The owners / managers know it but are too busy counting the money to care.

The Regent, Penzance

Zero Lounge downstars but now seems to be an appartment block.

The Turks Head, Penzance

Locals mix well with the tourist / passing trade. Good range of beers and ciders - noticed Hobgoblin in the fridge, but stuck to the Stella! Mrs T complained the coffee was weak!

The Burtle Inn, Burtle

I probably shouldn't be complaining about the price of water on this site, but 5.50 for a bottle of mineral water. I've paid a lot less in well known (and rated) Central London eateries. Stick to the beer!

Food is of variable/indifferent quality: drive on to Catcott!

Pub is up for sale and as the asking price is forced down by lack of interest, prices to the punter are forced up.

The Coach and Horses, Nottingham

Meant to say:

Two pubs on this stretch of Upper Parliament Street, this is one of them and they're both dire! If you work and DONT'T regret the smoking ban you won't feel at home in either.

Langtry's, Nottingham

Good and changing selection of real ales. Friendly staff. Unpretentious pub in the style of Hogsheads 8-9 years ago. Go there!

The Blue Bell, Nottingham

Recently refurbished. Looks like it's trying to be a night venue "bar" not a pub. Definitely aimed at the younger end of the market. The one server when I was in there couldn't cope with 3 at the bar, so I went next door!

The Orange Tree, Nottingham

Excellent bar. Great choice of beers, ciders, wine and cocktails. Certainly students predominate but others, even middle-aged men welcome. I'm back there tomorrow...

The Welbeck Hotel, Nottingham

It's a hotel bar, so don't have any other expectation. Pleasant enough but it is part of the restaurant on the 5th floor. Draught beer but not real ale as I recall, better for a g&t or a glass of wine.

The Moat House, Taunton

Sorry that should be "staff now smile and serve".

The Moat House, Taunton

Much improved since its (limited) makeover. Staff now smile and server. Great food and chilled out atmosphere makes it a great place for a lunch break to forget the stresses of the day at the office.

The Moat House, Taunton

A large for sale sign outside has deterred the staff from serving...two people waiting at the bar and the staffg continue their mothers' union meeting....I would tell you about the time I had, but then I walked out!!

The Winchester Arms, Taunton

Only been at lunchtime: service shambolic - but then that seems to be the case in Taunton. First time I walked out as no one behind the bar. Been a couple more times, and felt like I was in a nightclub in the morning. However, good pub food for those prepared to wait!

The Castle Green Inn, Taunton

Glad to see that they're trying to make new start and even a grumpy old man will be safe. I've only been in at lunchtime and find it a pleasant and relaxed place to go to. It seems to be a place to eat and drink rather than drink, and I don't think too much here for a CAMRA member to enthuse over.

Staff still seem to be on another planet (or do they enjoy themselves every evening???) but nonetheless friendly and courteous, just disorganised!!!
