Chlachain Inn, Mallaig

Smart modern decor
Local real ale was nice to see and tasted good
Food freshly prepared and local, tasted brilliant
I could not fault the place

Stronlossit Inn, Roy Bridge

Caters for tourists
Feels uncomfortable in there like you are being watched
Waiters not attentive, foreign, would be nice if they were Scottish
Food expensive and ok but a little tasteless
Ale was very good

Seabourne, Pokesdown

Could be a good pub but seems to resemble that typical pub full of drunks and dodgy people. If you are not from around the area you will get starred at when you walk in.

Staff are average but not friendly. Music is far too loud. Real ale was Ringwood Bitter and something else. It was ok but not brilliant. Decor is a bit weird.

Shame as i think this pub could do so much better. A bouncer at the door tells you what to expect on weekends.

4/10 sorry :(

The Trowel and Hammer, Lowestoft

Food and beer very good but service slow for food.

26 Jun 2012 22:31

The Harrier Inn, Hamble

Excellent food when I visited a week or so ago.

Staff seemed friendly. TVs showing the football which kept people suitably entertained. Didn't get to try and beers but only 1 ale seemed to be on and I think it was Doom Bar.

Went on a Saturday evening and it was noisy with the footie crowd watching the TVs but it seemed quieter in the dining room which was nice. Only problem here is the constant flow of people coming through the dining room to go out to the smoking garden. Later in the evening the music is turned up and it gets a lot busier and noisier.

The Red Lion, Welwyn

Just had a meal here today and very impressed!

The food was amazing with a sort of Mediterranean style. The lamb cofter starter was perfect. The other food I saw around our table looked great too and got excellent comments. The bar had breakspear gold and doom bar. I had the doom bar and this seemed very good. The staff were attentive and friendly.

Overall a very positive experience and hard to pick out any faults. I will definitely return soon!!

9/10

The Warwick Castle, Maida Vale

Seemed like a quite nice pub. Lovely location in a side street from the canal. A couple of real ales including Adnams which made me a very happy person. The ale was a little cold but otherwise was very good.

Staff seemed friendly and the pub seemed OK inside. The special warm cyder they had was gorgeous.

I would visit again.

20 Jan 2011 20:10

The Jolly Sailors, Pakefield

Apparently this pub is currently boarded up because 'It's dangerous'.

Does anyone know any more on this...?

19 Nov 2010 20:01

The Murrell Arms, Barnham

OK this is the first time I am ever going to rate a poub 10/10.

This weekend was my 2nd visit to this pub and I must say everything was perfect. The pub its self is lovely very old style. There are old things everywhere you can just look around and evjoy looking at everything. The staff are very friendly especially the lady behind the bar. They do nice food and the ale is out the barrell. They even have some scotch for me : -) I asked for water with my scotch and wondered where it was and it was in a huge old corked bottle she had put on the bar. That was just amazing rather than getting a glass of water.

There was a resident dog and cat wandering around. Some locals (i think they were) and they started playing some sea shanty type music with squeeze boxes and they all sang alone, it was lovely.

I honestly have never found a pub better than this.

Perfect.

21 Sep 2010 21:45

The Star, Petworth

This pub is still very good. Food was OK, my dish was not quite what I hoped but it was still nice. The pint of beer I had was borderline off but drinkable.

The pub its self is still lovely in a nice location. The staff are very friendly and service is quick and efficient. Prices are average.

21 Sep 2010 21:38

Three Horseshoes, Watton at Stone

Beer was good tonight. Pub seemed to have a few people around about 21.15 and then after about half hour it emptied almost completely.

I don't go here very often and haven't eaten here for ages but it seems so nice here so I'm always surprised it's not busy. I think I will come here for a meal very soon to generate a bit of business.

16 Sep 2010 23:56

The Chequers, Stevenage

The beer was ok again tonight. 3 ales to choose from Bury St Edmunds, London Pride and 6x. Pride was good. Pub seemed busy as usual.

16 Sep 2010 23:52

The Burnett Arms, Banchory

Made a visit last night and left quite impressed. There are two real ales one is Deuchars and I can't remember what the other was. The Deuchars was lovely except just a wee it cold but that's me being picky. The food was lovely and staff seemed reasonably friendly.

Overall I was very happy with his place and would definitely go back.

12 Sep 2010 20:18

The Granby, Old Stevenage

Real Ale was GK IPA and Abbott. The IPA was perfect, good taste and temperature. The staff seemed quite friendly. The pub in general looked nice and was fairly smart and tidy. I didn't eat but from what I saw the food looked superb!

4 Jul 2010 17:24

The Hermit of Redcoat, Little Wymondley

Beer seems very good and the food was still as good as I can remember. Not sure what the beer cost as I wan't picking up the tab : )

The pub still seems very smart and staff were very friendly.

19 May 2010 19:04

The Lytton Arms, Knebworth

It still seems ok here. The beer seems spot on, the pub seems ok inside and out. My only gripe is music being played outside from the speaker. Please it is much nicer to hear the birds sing, cars come past and peoples chatter. The landlord? I think seems to be the most miserable git i've ever seen. The girl behind the bar was lovely though.

17 May 2010 20:02

The Robin Hood and Little John, Rabley Heath

Lovely old style pub in a grezt location. Smashing beer garden. Got stared out by a local who was sitting by the door. Beer i had was McMullen Country Best which was lovely. Staff seemed quite friendly.

17 May 2010 19:22

Our Mutual Friend, Stevenage

So I here :D

The ale in there yesterday was still lovely.

15 May 2010 18:41

The Chequers, Stevenage

Popped in for a quick beer but ended up having two as it was so nice. The place was heaving mostly due to mother's day. The beer on offer was London Pride, 6X and Bitter and Twisted. The B&T was lovely hence the two pints.

14 Mar 2010 20:25

Rose and Crown, Tewin

I was only here for a quick pint but everything seems in order. It's a lovely location and nice to sit outside with my pint and watch the world go by. GK Abbot and IPA available. The Abbot was totally spot on 10/10, temp OK, tasted great and looked perfect.

Staff seemed friendly and the pub was very busy with people eating which is always a good sign. From what I ear wigged from people coming out was 'that was lovely food I'm stuffed'.

Will definitely re-visit.

14 Mar 2010 20:18

The Star, Petworth

Beer good, food excellent and staff friendly. I had a special from the extensive board which was stilton and brocolli quiche. It was sooooo nice.

I would fully recommend the food.

27 Sep 2009 20:29

Black Bull, Buntingford

I wasn't convinced that this was a nice pub on my first visit this weekend. It was very quite when we got there at about 20.30. The AK was nice and staff friendly but seemed a bit 'odd'.

I'd have to visit again to be convinced if this is a good pub or not.

27 Sep 2009 20:21

The Murrell Arms, Barnham

Good beer from the barrel, friendly staff and a really nice pub inside. There were 4 ales if I remember. Nice old furniture and pictures all over the wall.

27 Sep 2009 20:14

Bright Star, Luton

Popped in for my first visit yesterday. Very smart traditional pub. Landlord was very friendly. The beer was McMullens AK, Cask and a guest. Shame that the Cask and Guest went off but the AK was lovely.

Nice grassy outside and seats to sit on. Everyone there seemed very friendly and I will definitely be going back. I never tried any food but wish I had as it looked really nice.

5 Jul 2009 13:04

The Oddfellows, Lowestoft

An old pub which has been modernised but is still good. It is very smart and has lots of old photos from years ago. The ale is usually very good and usually they have 3. I've not tried the food so no comment. The guy behind the bar is a good bloke always up for a chat. It can get very busy in the evenings.

I like to go here on Saturday afternoons for a few beers and to watch Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports News. They will usually change the channel for you if you want them to.

7 May 2009 21:04

Old Chequers, Friston

We dropped in for their beer festival and hog roast. The beer was all local and very good. Hog roast was superb even though they said it was their first one they've done. Staff were very friendly. Everyone sat out in the sun at the front so you can watch the world go by. There were almost as many dogs as people there!

Beer festival was not really a beer festival just about 8 beers instead of 1 or 2 but was still good. I do feel sorry for this pub as even though it is very smart, great staff, lovely location, nice beer and food I can't see how they can every attract a lot of customers as they are in the middle of no where.

All I will say is keep doing the beer festival and hog roast as I will definitely go back.

7 May 2009 20:57

The Red Lion, Stevenage

Pub has been done up and now looks very nice. Usually more people in teh garden that inside as they have a new smoking bit outside. Beer still good although no Abbott Reserve. Usually just GK IPA and Abbott.

A nice touch screen jukebox plays good music and there is always a nice mixture of crowd in the pub.

2 Mar 2009 19:57

The Waggon and Horses, Flamstead

This pub is on that programme Toughest Pubs in Britain.

25 Feb 2009 22:56

Our Mutual Friend, Stevenage

Im still going here for a regular Friday night drink. Ales are different every week which is nice as you never know what you're going to get.

Staff are friendly and so are the locals who frequent the pub. Some funny things happen sometimes if you stay till late. Such as a griuyp coming in and one who was drunk slept while sitting in a chair at the bar. Then the landlord Keith comes in and says "Evening all, what's this then?" Made me laugh. I've met some excellent people there mostly CAMRA members and even the guy who is in charge of the North Herts branch.

See you soon!

5 Feb 2009 21:42

The Six Templars, Hertford

A smart pub and nice building. Staff ok but have seen nicer. I stood there for a while even to get my first drink when it was quite empty. There was no sort of acknowledgement that I was there. The people in the pub seemed ok for a Friday night no trouble but still very busy.

Real ale....one or two of the guests tasted ok but eh regulars like GK IPA and Abbott tasted nothing like what they should. The beer was too cold as seems normal in Wetherspoons. I don't know if they have Cask Marque but if they do they don't deserve it.

I've seen better Wetherspoons pubs....

27 Jan 2009 20:31

The Trowel and Hammer, Lowestoft

This is a very nice old pub full of locals as it should be. It has a great atmosphere of the traditional English local pub. There are 3 real ales, Adnams Broadside, Abbott and I forgot what the other one was. All were very tasty and well kept. The locals in the pub are friendly and like to banter with the bar man Sid (I think his name was).

I didn't have any food but my parents inform me it is very good and they do the traditional things you want like liver and bacon!!

My most memorable part of the visit was when I was at the bar getting my beers and a local banged on the bar so the bar man stuck his head round and said 'alright I'll be there in a minute!'. I love that sort of thing.

Oh and dogs are most welcome so don't be suprised if you trip over a few. This is probably one of the best examples of a traditional English pub so you must visit it.

23 Oct 2008 19:39

New Inn, Horning

Still seems ok, beer good, food good and staff seemed friendly. Pub and garden both smart and tidy.

30 Jul 2008 21:19

The King's Head, Wells

Still seems ok. Still got beer out the barell which is good and staff seem ok.

6 Jul 2008 15:58

City Arms, Wells

A very nice pub with excellent real ales. I ate and drank in this pub and of all things that could have gone wrong, nothing went wrong at all. Beer excellent, food fantastic, pub it's self is nice, people good and staff very friendly and efficient. 9/10.

6 Jul 2008 15:37

The Lord Nelson, Southwold

Nice pub, nice location, nice people, nice staff, nice interior, great ale (Adnams of course!).

Had food and that was ok, gets very busy so get in there early. The staff coped extremly well and were very friendly through out. My only nag was they seemed very keen to get you out or away from tables by taking away plates when people on the table were still eating!! I hate that, so upsetting!!

Apart from the above thing everything else was 10/10 so I give this a 8/10.

17 May 2008 23:40

The Jolly Sailors, Pakefield

First visit and quite impressed. Lovely pub in excelent locations with stunning views of the sea. Looks quite nice inside and has a good selection of ales. Food was pretty good, we had the carvery. Staff seemed quite friendly and attentive. Chef was friendly when serving the meat.

25 Mar 2008 23:11

The White Horse, Burnham Green

Went for meal tonight and well impressed by this place. Have been before but there has been a big improvement since. Beers are all Mc Mullens and vbery tasty as always. Staff were friendly and attentive even on this busy friday.

Inside it is very nice with open fire but quite posh looking. It seems a lot more upper class than most pubs. Toilets very clean as is the whole place.

Fodd was fantasic and can't be faulted. You do pay the upper price bracket here but if you only visit now and then it is well worth it.

9 out of 10 and I don't say that very often.

15 Feb 2008 21:28

The Hermit of Redcoat, Little Wymondley

Beer good apart from Speckled Hen was off when tried. Had a guest and IPA and Abbott. Food selection very good with generous portions of what seem quite goiod quality food. Staff friendly and good pub atmousphere.

Prices are a bit high but worth it.

13 Feb 2008 21:11

Our Mutual Friend, Stevenage

Still the best pub. Lovely selection of ales which included a mild, porter, dark and golden ales. Staff friendly and crowd very good. It was so refreshing to stand at a bar and have the person next to you talk about the ales and what they think of them.

10 Feb 2008 02:04

The Red Lion, Stevenage

Pub still good for music and beer. They now have Abbott Reserbe 6.5% :D It's strong and goood, never seen it anywhere else before so well worth the try.

Be careful though as the bar staff may try and short change you. Otherwise this pub seems to get beter in terms of beer!

22 Dec 2007 00:43

Marquis of Lorne, Stevenage

Still good, love this pub. I reckon this is still the best in the high street. Beers are good, landlord is cool and everything is fine. There is even a dog in the bar now that runs around. Not sure what type it is but it likes you if you buy nuts or crisps.

22 Dec 2007 00:40

The Chequers, Stevenage

Menu has change slightly but still ok. Be careful as the real ale seems to bee off quite a lot of the time. There never seems to be anyone there who can change a barrel. Still good all over though.

22 Dec 2007 00:36

Coreys Mill, Stevenage

Food still very good. A huge menu and it comes out nice and tastes good.

3 Nov 2007 19:37

The Bear and Staff, Leicester Square

Beer is still good a nice selection. Punters can even vote for the next guest beer at the bar. On the wall you get a choice and you place your vote at the bar, how cool!

1 May 2007 20:57

The Tom Cribb, Piccadilly

Yes a nice small pub with a very nice interior. Staff were friendly and beer was great. They had 3 or 4 shepherd neame beers inc spitfire which I must add was very nice.

1 May 2007 20:53

The Lytton Arms, Knebworth

OMG (Oh My God) price rise!

Ok, I havn't been there for a while but it's now 2.60 to 2.85 for a pint of ale! I am happy to pay 2.50 because you can get 4 pints for a tenner but that's so much now. Don't get me wrong though the pub is still the best and staff great. The beer is on top form and food still, great.

I still can't believe people go up to the bar, look at 10 real ales and ask for a pint of fosters/carlsberg.... sooo lame.

9 Mar 2007 22:47

Gravity Bar, Dublin

Agreed, this is the best place for an all round view over dublin and the best free pint of Guinness you will ever taste. Does get crowded though.

6 Dec 2006 17:09

The Lytton Arms, Knebworth

Still up to sctatch, 9 real ales on, one missing but that's no big deal. They also have 3 ciders on too. Nie people in there, average age about 30 so no shite in there. Staff good although bar service was a bit slow for while but then picked up.

Ales are on top form and most at 2 a pint was a suprise. Last time I went, quite a while ago everything was about 2.50 a pint.

My best local pub ever and I'm so glad :)

14 Oct 2006 00:17

The Roebuck Inn, Stevenage

I visited about a month ago, better than I expected. I never looked at this place thinking it would seel real ales, afeter all it's a hotel. Pub part is a small room with small bar and TV. Usually people in there watching football but it's calm. The beer was superb, they had Marstons Pedigree which I haven;t seen in any other pub in and around Stevenage. They also had I think it was 3 other guest ales. I tried a pint of one of them and it was very nice. If your lucky you can sit in the small area between the bar and reception where the fire is as there are sofas there. Outside seeting too but right near busy roads.

Don't even bother going to the brewers fare place across the road unless that's your thing. Instead do what one of the other reviews said and walk up to the Mutual Friend. North Herts Camra HQ, well worth it.

2 Oct 2006 20:08

Our Mutual Friend, Stevenage

Im in two minds about this pub. I went there Saturday night for a few beers. I believe this pub has a good side and a bad side. It's like a good pub and a bad pub all in one. When we were there, there wsa do of some sort going on in the lively bar which was ok but there were some right pricks ij there. We were sitting outside trying to ahve a nice quiet drink and a few of them come out. "Alright geez! You lads alright, what ya doin?". That peed me right off for the night.

On the good side the real ale bar is just that. Full of nice people and friendly staff and excellent beer. They have about 6 ales on and they are all in perfect condition. They also have my all time favouite on all the time, Caledonian Deuchars IPA. There is lots of real ale related gear in this side of the pub so is very nice to be in.

I'd love to reate this pub highly but because of the other bar I put it down, shame really. I give the real ale bar 9/10 and the other side 5/10.

30 Aug 2006 20:50

The Robin Hood and Little John, Rabley Heath

Amazing pub in the middle of no where. The pub is can be found by several different country lanes which are most single lanes so be careful. It is set in a lovely location surrounded by fields. It has a reasonable size car park complete with horses in the garden. There is outside seating in the front garden or also round the side on a paved area.

Inside it is smallish but old style pub. There is a huge tv on the wall but it didn't seem to intrusive or damage the character of the pub. It has two parts to the pbu, a restaurant side and a pub side.

The staff are very friendly, food and drink is cheaper than most which was very supprising when we saw the food. I ordered a smoked salmon sandwich and extra cheesey garlic bread and for the price though it would not be up to much. When we got it, it was huge, great big thick bread, a dresses salad and whole bag of crisps on the plate. The garlic bread had a salad too and came as 4 half sticks of bagget. Food is great vbalue for money. The beer is McMullens AK and Country Best. I ordered a pint of coke and got about 1.5 pints as she gave me a bit more for the money, how nice :)

Can't recommended it enough. This is definately my favoured new pub of the year so far.

9 Aug 2006 19:56

The Lordship Arms, Benington

Very good pub, been Camra pub of the year three times so thats a good sign. Excellent range of ales about 6/7 I think. Also have some ciders and a stout. Friendly staff. Clean and pleasent appearence to the place.

There was only one thing that annoyed me. I went with 3 friends, we are all 22 years old, went in and I looked at the ales as I was buying. The young girl at the bar said hello and then said we do some lagers like fosters and stella. Hello! Not all us youngsters drink lager you know. She seemed to instantly think that only young poeple drink lager. She should be encorouging drinking of good beer! Anyway that's no reason to rate lowly.

A splendid pub.

5 Aug 2006 23:25

The Ham and Blackbird, Farnborough

Stopped in for a quick meal before getting a train. Unusual setting in a roundabout! It said Cask Marque on the door, great I thought, no, the IPA was off and no sign they were even considering changing the barrel. Food was poor, vegitables were cooked ages ago and warmed up, you can tell, part of food was missing, prices to high. .......

22 Jul 2006 23:31

Crooked Billet, Stevenage

Sorry, I will now write my comment in English:

Quite a big place, family friendly side and an over 18's only side of the pub. Staff seem pretty friendly. Although I didn't eat the food seemed ok from what I saw. Beer is ok, Speckled Hen, GK IPA and Abbott. Nice big out door seating area at front and decking area at the back. No too bad.

8 Jul 2006 16:24

The Ship, Reedham

What a great location for a pub. The pub is situated right next to the river and the swinging railway bridge. They have Adnams, Abbot and GK IPA if I remember correctly. I only had a shandy as I was driving but there were lots of people drinking the beer so I guess it was good. Nice front of building with lots of colourful flowers. Staff were ok. Outside seating is good especially good when you get to see that bridge move. Food was alright, nothing special though. Funny how a ploughmans can change significantly from place to place.

Not too bad a pub.

1 Jul 2006 21:33

New Inn, Horning

On my visit to the broads I was pleasently suprised to find that this pub was right next to the cottage we rented for the week. It only took us 30 seconds to walk there! Nice interior and big exterior garden just been done up. Inside there is lots of sailing and boat stuff on the walls and aeroplanes hanging from the ceiling. Outside there is ample seating and boats can be moored but usually have to be reserved. There is a really friendly and helpful guy there who helps tie up the boats. There are kids amusements there like games machines and pool tables but these are locked in a shed so don't really spoil the place.

The beer! They offer Adnams Bitter, GK IPA and Woodfordes Nelsons Revenge. All are superb but the Nelsons stood out by a very long way. It has such a lovely taste so I had to down a few of those. There are plenty of other drinks to keep the women happy. There is a small TV so they could watch the world cup but it doesn't draw a loud crowd.

The food is OK but I have had better from similar pubs. The menu isnt that extensive and almost all meals seem to be served with chips, no potatoes as another option :( Also a lack of veg with the food too. However it all tasted ok. If you want quality food, try some of the restaurants along Horning High Street.

We sat in the garden with the nice beer watching some of the plebs trying to fish. I tell you, you really do get some idiots there.

Overall a great pub.

1 Jul 2006 21:27

The Swan, Horning

Went in and came back out. Big place with good outside seeting though. It seems to be host to the more chavier of peoiple who visit the brosds in my opinion. They do the typical brewers fayer pub food, if thats your kind of thing then you willb e happy there.

They had GK IPA on handle but it was off, thats why we left. I wouldn;t have wanted to stay in there anyway.

1 Jul 2006 21:12

The Royal Oak, Stevenage

There seems to be two sides to the pub. I went in the right side. It seemsed if you wanted to be served then you had to press the bell! There was a dart board and TV. The pub was quiet though, not that meany people there.

Inside they have some good stuff on the walls of old sports people liken a god picture of Nigel Mansell & Damon Hill. Good to look at if you're into that suuff.

Beers on offer were McMullens AK, Country Best Bitter and their special (I can;t remember name sorry). They were all quite nice though. All usual drinks too.

I give 6/10.

21 May 2006 01:25

The Proverbial, Stevenage

No trainer rule? Me and my friend got in wearing army boots.

Any how, very crowded during evening and night, loud, young people mostly. Berr was alright though! They had aLondon Pride and 'Fork Handles' or 'Four Candles', how ever it is said. The Four Candles was lovely, really nice taste.

20 May 2006 17:17

The White Horse, Hertford

Went in for a quick drink (of coke) I was driving. A nice small place, old English pub. Nice staff, loads of beers, if only I could ahve tried them. Big bear badsges on some walls good to look at. Very old looking inside and old looking furniture.

Will go back soon for the beer!

13 May 2006 18:34

The Rising Sun, Weston

They seem to have those odd hours where they only open around lunch time and dinner time. Not too much of a problem except we got there about 5 mins before they closed today :(

I've never eaten here only ever had a drink. They do sell McMullen AK!!! And some other I cant remember (sorry!). A largish pub set in big grounds. A good place for the family as they have a huge garden area where you can let the kids out to play footie or feed the horse or something.

Staff seem ok and the place seems alright. They have a lot of photos and stuff on the wall which is nice to look at.

I will review again if I ever eat there.

22 Apr 2006 23:47

The Rose and Crown, Ashwell

A nice old pub in the Ashwell high street. Ashwell is a lovely old village and this pubs suits it well.

I've been here twice now, once today. Has a nice interior quite big, plenty of tables and a nice big bit out the back to sit.

They have two ales and one guest. I think it was GK IPA and Abbot with the guest something like Titanic. I couldn't try the beer as I was driving! My friend tells me it was ok though.

We had food. They have a nice menu with a good choice. I always have the smoked salmon sandwich with salad. It is a bit expensive at 5 something but it is definitely worth every penny. I asked for brown bread and it was lovely and thick, plenty of smoked salmon and a lovely salad too. Staff are very friendly.

They appear to do the odd fun night e.g. tonight was 50, 60 70's night. Not sure if that's my type of thing to see in an old pub but there ya go. Also in the pub is a TV and a dart board. The TV never seemed to be switched on which is a good thing. There was some music playing but only quietly. Well worth a visit.

22 Apr 2006 23:34

The Chequers, Stevenage

The real ale has now changed to Bombadier, and it is still very nice.

17 Apr 2006 17:38

Marquis of Lorne, Stevenage

I went here again last weekend. First thing I saw was a notice on the door about price increase on drinks. Didn't seem any more that usual though to be honest. Same old crowd at the bar, some a bit rowdy but they calmed down. The pub still has nice staff, people and beer!!

What was a shocker though was that we managed to get a table, in a small corner but it was ok. The Old Speckled Hen is still the best for miles. It tastes just as it should, they keep their beers well.

I still have not been in the left side of the pub though. For those who have been there you will not when you go in the entrance dorr you can turn left or go straight on. There is a small area on the left and one on the right. I've never been in the left side so might have to one day and I'll let you know.

This pub is by far still the best pub in the old town.

7 Apr 2006 18:22

Edward The Confessor, Stevenage

I walk past this pub often as I work in the town. When you go past all you see is the same eople in there. Those people include old drunk people, chavs and low lifes in general.

I've never been there and never will go there, in fact, it should be the next build to be removed or change to some nicer shop.

What also annoys me is during the warmer days you get all the lowlifes sitting on the steps outside with their lagers, kids!, on mobiles shouting drinking alchohol in the street. Not nice..

Don't go there.

Coopers Arms, Hitchin

Nice old pub. Depending on which direction you walk from you may have to walk up the hill to get there. At least that gives you a thirst :)

They sell the local McMullens AK beer which is well kept and taste lovely.

A good mixture of people in there, not too loud. I think there is a juke box but nothing was being played on it last time I was there.

The Sunrunner, Hitchin

Nice pub, looks modern, well more modern than a nice old pub. It had lots of real ales on. You can choose what you want from the big black board on the wall.

Seating is a bit sparse and cramped as it is not a big place.

Seems to get quite busy at night, mainly your older folk which is good.

2Dry, Stevenage

Does anyone know if they still play darts in there and also do they still sell McMullen AK?

The Rabbit's Foot, Ardeley

I went here for an evening meal recently. It is a very out of the way pub anfd not very big. Nverer the less this is a excellent pub.

The staff are very friendly and polite. They seell IPA and Abbott ales at the bar amound usual drinks. The beers are very well kept (I reccommend the Abbott :)

We had no problem with us giuving them an order for 9 people on a sheet of paper either. We were taken through to the dining area and we were all sat around a lovely big round table.

The service at the table was fantastic and frequent but not overdone.

Food selection was great with a nice variety of interesting dishes available. The food was cooked perfectly and served nice, hot & fresh from the kitchin.

I have to say I think this is a pub for those willing to pay a slightly higher price than average. Let this not be a turnoff though as the price is very well worh every penny.

Otherthings, parking is not too great as there is not much room. If you plan to stay the evening and night like I did you will be ok with two cars as you can block park each other in but if you have 1 car you will get blocked in. Not too bad if you have to stay in the pub longer and drink the nice beer :)

I think there is a nice pub garden next to the car park but I did not use of see as it was evening/night time.

Overall, I was very impress with my visit and would reccommend this pub to other customers.

The Shooting Star, Liverpool Street

A nice pub. I was on a course across the road so we went out to theis pub just across the road at lunchtime.

The pub is a Fullers pub so it has 4 Fullers ales on the handle. They are very nice too. If you ask for a Fullers ESB it comes in a pint size brandy glass with Fullers Ale written on it :)

The food is very good and served promptly. I had a tuna sandwich and the next day had the ploughmans. You can have the ploughmans with either a pork pie or a wedge of stilton.

The bar staff seem to all be foreign but they understand English quite well which is good. The place was full of business men as you would expect.

I recommend this pub.

The Woodmans Arms, Stevenage

I went here on a Saturday lunchtime, it was not busy. The pub is very nice inside and the staff are friendly too. There is a nice big garden with good views too.

They have 3 real ales, IPA, Abbott and Ruddles. I tried the Ruddles, very nice it was too.

The food menu seemed poor but they have a big specials board that had nice selections on. Food was ok though but not the best I've seen. The prices were reasonable though.

They also have two budgies bird things in a cage on a table in the pub, they are not noisey though.

The Lytton Arms, Knebworth

This pub is definately worth a visit if you are passing. A nice view over the field of Knebworth if you sit out the front and you can watch people drive their cars past.

The pub inside is not as old looking as it used to be. They have a ig TV in there now (booo). They still however retain their 10 real ale handles always having 10 ales on. The have boards up on the walls describing their ales which is good.

The staff are ok, I've met nicer staff but also met much worse. Beer in the pub is excellent quality. I advise half pints of each if you want to do them all in one night, like I normally do!

Food is served, tey have a tiny restaurant section on the end of the bar. The quality of food is reasonable but I have not been for a while so can't really comment. Last visit I had a warm bree and cranberry sandwich in thinck cut bread with salad and crisps yummmmmmm, the bree dripped where it was melting :)

My last visit was to the beer festival which is held out the back in a big tent. There is also seating and a BBQ. I believe these festival are held a few times a year. I have to say I was very impressed.

At the festival they have abount 50 real ales all in barrells, poured from the barrell. They also provided lists to tick off what you drank etc. Out by the tent they had live entertainment. They had a two piece band, a guitarist and a double bass player. I was very impressed with the double bass player as I've never seen one of those played before.

Overall a wonderful pub.

The White Horse, Burnham Green

A nice old pub, quite big with a back garden and a huge green out the front.

They have about 4 real ales, one named 'Village Bike', this is very nice if I remember. Also behind the bar they had a huge jar of olives which you can buy small pots of at the bar.

Food is good but prices are high for both food and drink here. I do recommend this pub as it has a good atmousphere.

I don't think I've been to this pub ewnough times to give it a real god recommendation though. I say, 7/10.

The Chequers, Stevenage

This is my local pub. I used to be pretty naff buthad a good revamp some years back and has since been very sucessful. The pub has a smoking and none smoking restaurant split by the bar half way through the building. The bar is small but has some seating but restaurants are bigger. Real ale is Adnams bitter and has always been. Three are plently of other drinks.

The food is superb, the menu changes now and then and has some excellent selections at reasonalbe prices. They did have a T-Bone steak available, not sure if they still do.

Staff are friendly. The pub is looks old from the outside and retains that feature on the inside too. They have a bigish car park and a nice out side seating area where you can eat.

Where the pub is is located on the A602 at the south entrance to Stevenage.

My family and I frequent this pub many times a year. I recommend it for both food, drink and a nice atmousphere.

19 Jul 2005 20:12

The White Hart, Petersfield

I stopped here on my way to portsmouth. We chose to go to this pub as the outside looked more attractive than the one just down the road. Looks like our predictions were right.

The pub is very nice inside, a bar serving about 3 real ales and a restaurant. The pub is in a old style and has a beer garden at the back too.

The pub appeared to be frequented by older folk and the atmousphere was great. Food selection was ok, a nice special board. I had to try the bangers n mash as I always do at all pubs. They change the sausages they do all the time so you never know what your going to get. The food was very good though.

A highly recommended pub.

The Still and West, Portsmouth

I stopped here once while at the Festival of the Sea in Portsmouth.

The pub is situated right on the water front where you can watch the boats, ferries go into the harbour, they are about a stones throw away.

They have a outside seating area with big piknik tables which gives you excellent views.

In the pub (downstairs) they serve real ales which are of good quality. The Gales HSB is highly recommened as somone else mentioned. Beer was served in plastic glases when we were there.

Also next to the bar they have a fish n chips bar where you can place and order. You oder is then bought to your table. Out side we saw everyone ordering and eating their fish n chips and the smell was great!

The upstairs restaurant is great, we sat by the window and you could look down vertically and all you could see was the water. It was good you could wave to the ferries as they passed. Food selection is excellent, they have a fish counter where you can choose what you want. Staff are attentive and prices are maybe slightly higher than average but still good.

I recommend this pub to all.

The Florence Arms, Southsea

I stopped in this pub on about 3 occasions while attending the Festival of the Sea in Portsmouth. I have to say this has to be one of the nicest and friendliest pubs I have been in.

The average age of people in this pub be about 50 and a lot of them are local people. Everyone seemed friendly and staff are brilliant.

The pub offers two seperate bars and a restaurant. We went in the same bar each time and it was small but very cosy.

They offer about 3/4 real ales, Adnams Broadside, Youngs and Youngs Special. I think there is another but can't remember. Prices are your average and there are plenty of other drinks available too.

The staff take a lot of pride in their beer and treat you well. It was nice when I went up to the bvar and the bloke new exactly what my order was with out me uttering a word!

Once we had our drinks the bar man I think he was the manager came over and had a good chat with us all about who we were and where we are from etc, it was great!

We used the restuarant once and it was wonderful. Staff were attentive and the food selection is good. There are always specials on too. Unfortunately their wine supplier went out of business so we could not get the wine we wanted but that won't change my opinion of the pub.

The manager also came out to the restaurant to give us our wine and have a chat, very friendly. I advise booking a table if you want to get in the restuarant. Prices for food are very rasonable for what you get too.

One of my likes about a nice old pub like this is that they ahve ornaments and memorabilia of old things around the pub. They also allow dogs into the bar, almost stepped on a boxer dog getting to the toilet!

I cannot recommend this pub enough, a definate visit is required if you are in this area.

8 Jul 2005 18:22

The Hogshead, Leicester Square

A modern style pub. Good for a quick bite to eat and a nice pint of London Pride ale. The staff seem ok and prices are average.

Quite a big place I seem to remember and the food is typical but nice.

24 Jun 2005 19:54

The Bear and Staff, Leicester Square

I've been here once in 2004 and it is a lovely but crowded pub. Ther have what I call two tier tables where you can put your drinks on one level and empties on the other.

They have few well kept real ales which are lovely, including Hobgoblin.

Well worth stopping here for a few.

24 Jun 2005 19:48

The Standing Order, Stevenage

I find this one more crowded than the one in the Plaza. Getting to the bar and served is a nightmare. When you do get served you turn around and are lucky to have any drink left by the time you get to where you are if it hasn;'t been knocked out ur hand.

Still cheap and real beers though.

18 Jun 2005 22:42

Old Red Lion, Stevenage

I've been there once on a weekday night. It wasn't busy, the bar lasy was friendly and took care pouring a superb ping of Abbott ale.

However, I felt everything was let down when we went to sit down round the back where there was a table for of older men playing cards, swearing constantly and very loudly.

I think they do food but did not try this time. May visit there again, I recommend you do too.

18 Jun 2005 22:37

Marquis of Lorne, Stevenage

A nice little pub, a bit cramped in side but a nice outside area. Outside you can sit and drink your ales while watching the chavs go past in their novas and generally watch people go buy.

They have nice bar staff and it is a nice atmousphere, apart from the smoke. There are a variety of real ales including the standard Green King IPA, Abbott and Old Speckelled.

The best experience I had of the pub was on a St Georges Day when they decorated the whole pub with flags and there was someone dressed up as a dragon.

Apparently they do regular quiz nights which im sure a good. They also do food I believe but I have never eaten in there so can't comment there.

Recently they stuck a Over 21 Only sign on the door. Im not sure why but I guess they must have been having trouble with youngans thnking it was wetherspoons or something. However, I am 20, I look 15 but they did not question me. As long as you not causing trouble or being loud you will be ok.

Overall, lovely pub.

13 May 2005 21:22

Our Mutual Friend, Stevenage

If I am not mistaken, this pub is the HQ of Camra for North Herts group. Camra is the campaign for real ale and if this is their HQ you are sure of some fine ales in there.

I have not been there yet but will do soon and will update on what I find out.

13 May 2005 21:03

The Rose and Crown, Hitchin

It sounds like a nice pub from the outside but changes when you get in there. No real ales, some smoothie bitters, quite loud and a youngans pub. If you like that sort of thing you will like this pub. I only stayed for about 10 minutes.

8 May 2005 10:31

2Dry, Stevenage

A typical old pub with locals. This pub is the place to come for a quiet night watching them all play darts. They have regualr games of darts in there. I think but and not sure, theya re the only pub in the old town which serve up Hertfordshires McMullen AK Ale. Its lovely too. The staff have always been friendly and as longs as your not loud the locals will not look at you.

6 May 2005 19:53

The Standard Bearer, Stevenage

Nice modern pub frequented by youngans in the evening and all ages over 18 during the day. The drinks and food are very cheap and quality is good. Staff are nice. 10 real ales usually on the handles and a vast array of other drinks too. They also hold regular beer festivals with extra ales. You can get drunk with a 10 note in this pub.

6 May 2005 19:49

The Red Lion, Stevenage

Old style pub which gets crowded most nights. They do live music thursday to sunday which usually comprises of rock and metal bands. The prices are average but they do have some real ales which are kept well. The people in there are your rock/metal fan types which can be a bit scary. However, I have never witnessed any trouble in there. I recommend visiting if rock music and real ale drinks are your thing.

6 May 2005 19:45

Coreys Mill, Stevenage

Recenctly refurbished beefeater pub. Good range of drinks and typical prices. Food is reasonable and service is the same. This is the place to go if you want a quick meal and nothing fancy.
