Founders Arms, Bankside

I'm with Wilko on this one. Went there on a sunny sunday with family and whilst it was full of tourists and the food and drink not exactly cheap (£12 for gammon and chips), the view and food were good, real ale selection adequate, the portions large, service friendly and efficient.

I obviously wouldn't come here for a drinking session but given it's proximity to the Tate Modern, Millenium Bridge, South Bank (including "beach" if the tides out) and slightly further afield, The Golden Hind, St. Pauls etc. i'd definitely come again with visiting friends or family if in the area and they weren't on a strict budget.

Strongroom, Shoreditch

This used to be a great pub, if you're into music and belgian beer and we used to look forward to heading here if we were ever in the area before a gig.

Unfortunately it seems to have had a mini refurb. Where in the past they had quite a wide selection of belgian ale including Chimay Blue and Delirium Red and knowledgeble staff, when i went in recently, I had to point to the actual belgian beer i wanted as the staff member had never even heard of it and they appear to have got rid of the menus.

Not sure if they still have music on downstairs or mini music festivals (there's a large outside area with seating) in summer but the food was still good. I hope when i next return they'll have restored the previous wide selection of ales amn have staff that can at least locate them.

Ty Gwyn Inn, Betws-y-Coed

Certainly the best pub we tried in the Betws-y-coed area. All but one of the pubs in the centre of town we found were hotel bars.

As mentioned below, the focus seems to be on the food, which was fabulous though admittedly on the slightly more expensive end, only tried the one (Rev James) ale but it was well kept.

About 15mins walk out of town across Waterloo bridge but well worth the trip if you want a character pub with great food.

The Stables, Betws-y-Coed

As noted below, the only non hotel bar we found in the centre of town. Saying that there's a large outdoor seating area (with heat lamps) and live jazz every thursday which were pleasant enough and the place was busy compared to the hotel bar we tried.

The two ales we had were both excellent and the staff friendly. Didn't try the food. But probably the best choice unless you fancy the walk out of town to Ty Gwyn.

The Engineer, Primrose Hill

Went here last (sat) night as we had an hour to kill before going to a gig and wanted somewhere with some real ale, where the music wasn't so loud you couldn't have a conversation and where we could actually be inside and this fitted the bill perfectly.

They had St. Peter's on tap, space to stand inside, pleasant atmosphere, and you could hear yourself think which is better than the other Camden venue's we tried.

Didn't have any problems getting in or getting served - but we weren't eating.

It's a bit out of the way but you can take a shortcut down the canal towpath from Camden Lock.

Only tried this twice now, once a long time ago, but didn't notice any of the problems other's mentioned so would go here again for somewhere quieter.

The White House, Littleborough

This has become our eating pub of choice when in the Littleborough area.

Have only been recently on Sundays when it can be very busy as it's popular with walkers and cyclists etc. so worth making a reservation at busy times. They've moved to only taking reservations for certain times during peak hours (e.g. Sundays 12pm, 2pm ...) but as the service is always very prompt, even when full, 2 hours has always been plenty.

As mentioned some great views, really good food including a good choice of specials and good choice of ales (regularly get a choice of Landlord or Black Sheep etc.). Staff friendly, plenty of parking space, nice bright tasteful interior, kids friendly. Not eaten in any of the other pubs in Littleborough recently but I'd definitely say the ~7 for a decent roast dinner here was good value.

Highly Recommended.

The Black Bull, Haworth

Visited here as it's in Haworth, a worthwhile stop on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway.

Went in on spec after not being able to find any seats in what looked like the much better Fleece further down the hill.

I'd agree with the previous posters, the place was dark, tatty and in definite need of a refurbishment. Ale was okay but i've made better mulled wines myself. Waited a long time for our main course only food order (must have been at least 45 minutes). Whilst what we had was edible, the gammon was tough and overcooked, as was the veg - it didn't have any flavour left. Maybe we've been spoilt with some of the other pubs we frequent but for ~8 a main i'd expect a *lot* better.

The Defector's Weld, Shepherds Bush

Went here Saturday and Sunday night as we had consecutive gigs at the Empire. Decent selection of beer including one decent (Addlestone's) cider and Fruli (not cheap but then it never is). Staff pretty friendly. Good selection of music being played. Didn't have any problem getting seats. Tried the food (i had the Frank's burger which was very good and apparently the chicken caesar wasn't bad either).
I've not tried any nearby pubs to compare it to other than Walkabout (the less said about that the better) and Ginglik (which i assume is a club only having ever seen gigs there).
Probably not the cheapest place around but for somewhere relaxed to meet people before going to the empire, for me still a good choice.
