The Hind, Leicester

Going well under new management. One beer is local (Derby/Leicester/Nottingham) and on this visit was a v nice Blue Monkey Infinity. Food also good and value for money. Breakfasts are served from early morning. Popular with sports fans as opposite railway station. Also has nice beer garden and rail departure screens.

30 Aug 2014 16:57

Grain Barge, Bristol

Enjoyed a beer with a view of SS Great Britain and a summer sunset. Good atmostphere inside.

2 Jul 2013 09:30

The Bag O' Nails, Bristol

Was in here on a Monday night (24/06) whilst on an overnight business stop and a good number were present enjoying their evening. Its a shame recent posts have resulted in the owner having to defend his business. Down to earth, eclectic and with standards, what's wrong with that? Some aren't going to agree or feel comfortable here so try elsewhere. Beer is sourced near and far and was in good condition (and only £2.50pt!) . Number of beers on is tailored to trade to keep quality up. Good selection of overseas bottles. Vinyl LPs supply the music. Overall a wonderful place to while away a couple of hours.

2 Jul 2013 09:28

Dean Park Inn, Bournemouth

4 Wadworth beers which were fine. Food also decent. Probably could do with a couple of extra staff as no one came over at the end of the main course. Would go again though.

20 Apr 2013 21:52

The Mary Shelley, Bournemouth

Beer ok, servive iffy. Seemed to be a slapdash attitude around the place.

20 Apr 2013 21:49

Goat and Tricycle, Bournemouth

Worried about some online reveiws but unfounded. 10 beers on + a cider. 5 from Wadworth and 5 guests. All the ones sampled over 2 nights in good condition. Food not sampled but looked good. Vibrant pub , a bit out of the way but worth seeking out.

20 Apr 2013 21:39

The Cedars, Evington

26 May 2011 19:43

Last Plantagenet, Leicester

Sunday evening and a great selection of festival brews. Staff often run off their feet and on the go non stop. Might not be everyone's idea of the place to go but you should know what to expect in these establishments by now!! Management will deal with problems.

1 Nov 2010 14:15

Great Central, Fallowfield

Walked in Saturday afternoon, obvious it had been busy due to the amount of cluttered tables. Beer poor and poor festival choice. Food portions seen to be shrinking , could easily count the chips!

1 Nov 2010 14:09

25 Oct 2010 21:03

The Quadrant, Brighton

Almost triangular shaped pub. Pie menu varies, they are quality pies although some may find them expensive at 4+. Hosts a comedy club upstairs on Saturdays. supporter of local breweries.

25 Oct 2010 21:00

The West Quay, Brighton

The better spoons in Brighton though remember its by the marina a little out of town. Local beers supported, enough staff but kept busy. Outside seating overlooking marina. Next to bus stops.

The George Hotel, Whittlesey

Now reopened as Wetherspoons

29 Jul 2010 17:18

The Gynsills, Glenfield

2 for 10 venue adjacent to County Hall and a Premier Inn. What is saved for on the food is made up by the drinks prices. Iffy service. Two handpumps, Adnams n/a & "Ruddles" so not sampled. If you want cheap its fine.

21 May 2010 12:56

Old Horse, Leicester

Great recent beer festival and entertainment. Hog roast cobs for the hungry. No complaints re service, spot on again.

14 May 2010 11:54

Always try to call in after a day out before the train home. Interesting to see recently opened "Revolution" beer on.

14 May 2010 11:50

The Oxted Inn, Oxted

Does this place take on a different persona at night? We were there recently for a Friday lunch. Adequate for the chain. Shoppers and oldie lunch crowd in. No problems noted. Beer ok.

14 May 2010 11:49

The Porter and Sorter, Croydon

5 Mar 2010 16:19

The Junction Hotel, Dorchester

A Marston's and Ringwood cask ale were available. The Ringwood was sampled and fine. Service tainted by incorrect change having to be corrected. Marston's venue which has probably seen better times though has potential if the will is there. Full Marston's pub menu available. Didn't sample but a mixed grill nearby looked inviting.

22 Feb 2010 15:32

Royal Oak, Dorchester

Pleasant building in the town. Staff busy and place tidy though ,as always, they could have been quicker to serve instead of filling up cups & bottles. Beers from Cottage/Weymouth/Wyre Piddle. Had two meals off the value list which were promptly served.

22 Feb 2010 15:23

The Crown and Sceptre, Streatham

Came across this by accident. For a spoons it looks like a pub from the outside .Local beers from Sambrook. Being in outer London probably has its local fans.

12 Feb 2010 10:18

The Hollybush, Loughton

This is a McMullen pub so they were serving up AK and Country Bitter which were Ok. In on a quite late afternoon so can only comment place was clean and presentable.

12 Feb 2010 10:15

The Moon on the Hill, Sutton

Didn't notice the smell & beer was fine. Good collection of "characters" around the place! Preferred the Grapes of the two in Sutton.

12 Feb 2010 10:13

The Grapes, Sutton

Was in here lunchtime on 2nd Feb. Fine pint from Salopian. Food was fine, colleague with me said it was the best burger he'd had in a spoons. Pub well presented and clean. It was noticed that the reason for everyone being on the ball was an area manger type person at the table next to us. By the time we left the place was nearly full. I'm sure if the reported problems have been sent to JDW they have been dealt with.

12 Feb 2010 10:10

The Hutton, Brentwood

Smart local near to Shenfield station. GK IPA + Abbott & a guest. Prices typical of the area. Offers food.

11 Jan 2010 19:33

The Cricketers, Ipswich

Must have been in around the same time as Rod (late review). Slow service and usual selection of "interesting" patrons.

11 Jan 2010 18:34

Mannings, Ipswich

Great place next to the market. Adnams, Landlord and Pride on the bar. Very good food offering. Good service. Mural on the wall outside in the back makes the smoking area look like a bar.

11 Jan 2010 18:32

Wetherspoons, Ipswich

Late review from Nov09. Usual offering with , as Adam says, local brews. Cliff Quay on our visit.

11 Jan 2010 18:30

Old Horse, Leicester

Have to give this place another mention as it sort of turned into our local at the end of the year. Great food, good beers (mainly everards with occasional guest) and generally well run.

11 Jan 2010 18:16

Edward Wylie, Glasgow

11 Jan 2010 17:34

The Guildford Arms, Edinburgh

Arrived on a short pre Christmas weekend to find a beer festival on. Around 10 pumps in use. 3 pint. Worth a look for the architecture. Close to Waverly Station so well worth a visit.

11 Jan 2010 17:32

The Ford Madox Brown, Rusholme

8 handpumps in use in this two room pub. Also has a beer garden. Food not sampled put looked good being served to a party that filled the rear room. Range of breweries on offer though none represented the LocAle sticker on the door.

3 Nov 2009 21:52

Micro Bar, Manchester

In the food hall on the High St side of the Arndale Centre. Saltaire + 2 Bridges on my visit + a cider. A Boggart not quite ready. With the number of food stalls around could be a gem of a lunch stop on a city centre crawl.

3 Nov 2009 21:48

Elihu Yale, Wrexham

Why Gladius? Visited on a Wednesday afternoon (7 Oct). Yes, there were some people who had probably spent a bit too long in there and were getting loud . The bar staff were very efficient and the food quickly served & enjoyed.Choice of ales available. I suspect there are many pubs that would love to be that busy during the day. Easily reached from both stations.

9 Oct 2009 17:02

Moon Under Water, Wigan

Have visited a few times & agree with recent comments. You know what you're getting which is decent compared to nearby establishments.

30 Sep 2009 09:54

The Forest House, Chester

30 Sep 2009 09:50

Picture House, Colwyn Bay

Wonderfully restored, as the name says, Picture House. The varying levels make it seem smaller than what it is. Had local Conwy beer on.

30 Sep 2009 09:45

The Standing Order, Derby

As stated below good building. Staff know the locals. Good range of ales on. Were there Thursday t time so a good few in but not overly busy.

7 Sep 2009 10:32

Wetherspoons, Leeds

As comments for 22 Oct 07 review. Door staff present as req now though. Staff were coping with constant demand. My pint of York Brewery Wheat beer offering very enjoyable. Always a handy stop being part of the station.

7 Sep 2009 10:23

Whoop Hall Hotel, Kirkby Lonsdale

There on 6 Sept for a Baptism party. Expect hotel prices. Black sheep bitter (sampled, fine) and GK IPA on handpump. Food well cooked and presented. Staff all polite and organised. Worth treating yourself for a stay or passing visit.

7 Sep 2009 10:19

Game Cock Inn, Austwick

Had booked accommodation here for a Saturday night. Arrived just before 6 to find a queue. Opened at 6. Small bar area and separate dining room.Beer garden at rear. V popular locally so booking recommended. As it was still warm enough we ate at outside tables. French chef who produces quality food with locally sourced meats. Thwaites beer in good condition. Large room with comfy bed and sofa. Separate shared bathroom ,large and clean. Only points were too much paint on window frames so wouldn't shut properly and lack of hot water for a short while. Occasional bus service to/from Settle.

7 Sep 2009 10:15

The Golden Lion, Settle

Beer was fine (Thwaites) tho needed to be for above average prices. Food looked fine with many takers. Front bar area is the original hotel reception area so can be cosy. Larger side room with pool & TV.

7 Sep 2009 10:07

1 Sep 2009 20:49

The Regal, Gloucester

Busy with good selection of ales. Looking around it is in need of refurbishment. Worn out carpet, sticky tables. No fault with food & beer though!

10 Aug 2009 18:23

The New Inn, Gloucester

Relating to Andy's comments this could be and probably was a gem. Part of an old coaching inn/hotel. Off a small courtyard are the pub , a coffee shop , wine bar and toilets. Some scaffold up and renovation taking place on our visit (5th Aug). Stopped for a swift half. Hopefully the money is there to smarten it up but don't be put off trying it.

10 Aug 2009 18:20

The Water Poet, Gloucester

Decent (real)pint on a rare summer's day. Mid PM so quiet. Place smart & tidy , spacious garden area.

10 Aug 2009 18:16

Last Plantagenet, Leicester

To balance recent comments there may be some truth in them but as with all spoons it depends on when you visit. Indeed if as bad as suggested would it still be open? If anyone does overstep the mark then they are ushered out. Have seen this happen. Also compared to others I've seen reviewed it did well for beer selection during the recent Festival. Expect reduced choice after a good Rugby/Football day. Can't recall seeing any drug paraphenalia when I've been in.

15 May 2009 08:49

Bears Head, Penarth

Very acceptable lunch stop. Brains & Bullmastiff local beers on. Tried the Brains SA Gold & Bullmastiff Gold, both in good condition if served a little cold. What seemed to be the regular retired crowd in , but you can't blame them can you?

The Ship, Barry

Closed May5-22 for refurb. GK plaques remain by entrances.

15 May 2009 08:10

12 May 2009 09:55

The Crown, Oakengates

Recent beer festival had a good selection to go at. With The Station across the road two good venues in a quiet, run down looking town. May be its better in the day when everywhere is open/summer when warmer.

12 May 2009 09:53

The Royal Oak, Ellerdine Heath

Late change on our itinerary but well received by everyone on the coach. Well kept local (Shropshire/Hereford) brews. Is also known as The Tiddley. Well worth leaving the main road.

12 May 2009 09:49

The All Nations, Madeley

review no.5 to totally disagree with angeldrop! The landlord and his band of assistants couldn't have been more welcoming when our (prearranged) coach party descended on a Saturday afternoon. The queue out the door was soon served. Even provided a coffee (no machine-kettle in kitchen) without a problem.Locals not bothered. Excellent local area brews, even better @ 2/2.30. Baps looked great tho didn't sample.

12 May 2009 09:46

The Railwaymans Arms, Bridgnorth

Can't add much to the previous 09/late 08 comments. Must go back as was the last call on our crawl before the coach departed. fantastic place. A gleamimg Duke of Gloucester was on duty in the station (for oggwyn!!)

12 May 2009 09:39

Jewel Of The Severn, Bridgnorth

Only called in for a quick half on our crawl around the town , Sat 2 May. Well populated but inside looks tired. Toilets very bright and clean. Had half a Batemans which was poor. Be warned they have a queuing system for coffees on Saturdays. Pay as normal then join queue at coffee machine to be served. Helps keep bar staff available. Sure it has better days but next door showed the way.........

12 May 2009 09:35

The Golden Lion Inn, Bridgnorth

Wonderful Hobsons Town Crier on our May 2 visit. 3 rooms with seating out the back. On viewing the menu decided to lunch here. Good choice over the 'spoons next door. Fresh, large crusty baguettes filled with meat at very reasonable prices. Rest of the menu looked very nice also.

12 May 2009 09:30

Typical town 'spoons. Bit dark inside. Purity brewery offering was ok.

25 Mar 2009 20:33

The Waggon and Horses, Lymington

Was in on Tues lunch during visiting the branch line from Brockenhurst. Quiet with only a few locals around. Collection of bottle openers above the bar.

25 Mar 2009 20:31

23 Feb 2009 18:04

The Queen Victoria, Leicester

Just to confirm the Queen Victoria, 28 Southampton Street, Leicester will reopen as previously stated this Friday 13th February.

11 Feb 2009 17:08

The West Riding Refreshment Rooms, Dewsbury

This place maintains standards that many others could learn from. 1st sample a little cool but the TT Landlord spot on. If visiting the Cellar Bar along the line check times as it doesn't open till 4 some days (doh!).

10 Dec 2008 20:37

Time Piece, Dewsbury

On a Monday lunchtime there were a few regulars in who, yes, probably spend a fair amount of their time here. Other townsfolk were in evidence as well though. Friendly staff and 4 winter special ales on inc 2 local Saltaire. That was ok once it had warmed up a bit. if you wouldn't go in here you probably wouldn't be in the town anyway...

Britannia Inn, Queniborough

Clean and bright - good if a little pricey beer

20 Nov 2008 17:22

The Brookside, Barkby

GBG pub but was below par on recent visit. Despite the many pump clips on the walls only a Ruddles (GK version) was available. According to the locals the previous night had been unexpectedly busy. Always had good local paper write ups so hopefully a one off.

20 Nov 2008 17:19

14 Nov 2008 09:45

The Alexandra Tavern, Norwich

Can't add a lot to what's gone before. We were recited poetry by a Yorkshireman with a broken arm. V friendly place.

14 Nov 2008 09:42

High Cross, Leicester

Surprised to see only one review here.... is it the wrong end of town for most? Haven't been in for ages myself but treated one to a visit on the opening day of the Festival. Its always been the quieter (in terms of general atmosphere)of the spoons in Leicester. Wee populated though and the usual mix in on a Thursday pm. Festival beers on included Brains /Langton & superb Orkney Dark lsland. In fact two local Langton Brewery on plus one being prepared.Observed a keen & knowledgeable manager , always a bonus for JDW.

31 Oct 2008 08:34

Powder Monkey, Exmouth

Looks on the small side for JDW but has a number of rooms joined together + outdoor seating at the front. Near to station.

28 Oct 2008 08:36

The White Hart Hotel, Exeter

Marstons Pedigree & a Ringwood available. The pedigree acceptable quality. The baguette we had a bit disappointing as appeared not quite as advertised. Interesting building worth a look. Opposite the 'Spoons on South St so cheaper beer only on the other side of the road!

28 Oct 2008 08:33

George's Meeting House, Exeter

The quieter spoons in Exeter (maybe due to the nature of the building). Slow service but in part due to coffee orders. local beers in evidence.

28 Oct 2008 08:29

The Imperial, Exeter

Although busy no problem getting served. Local ales Skinners/Bays/Cotleigh. Sat in the superb Orangey. Worth a visit for the building and beers.

28 Oct 2008 08:26

The Great Western Hotel, Exeter

28 Oct 2008 08:21

The Oxford, Kentish Town

Couldn't stop for food as we had to be elsewhere before service started at 6pm. Would have stopped if time. Beer ok , two on the bar and Tring Brewery sampled. may get cosy and have a lot of tables for food but probably needs to to survive.......

28 Oct 2008 08:16

The Globe, Leicester

Have heard its been taken on by those running the Star & Garter in Wigston. If so will improve and be worth a visit still.

28 Oct 2008 08:11

The Atmospheric Railway Inn, Starcross

Will be known by us as the Lack of Atmosphere Inn / Abandoned Railway. Sure the locals like it though. Had Otter Brewery bitter and Bass on recent visit. Probably like a lot of quiet village places now struggling a bit.

26 Oct 2008 16:28

The Lord Stanley, Camden

Stopping nearby so tried it for an after show drink. Well kept Old Hookey, Spitfire on the bar along with GK IPA. Didn't try the food but it looked ok if a little pricey. Not made to feel like we should be eating.
PS Seymour only posted three comments, all on this pub!

30 Jun 2008 21:08

The West Brewing Company, Glasgow

Last went late 2006 and revisited recently on 21 June. Most tables were taken with everyone enjoying themselves. Beers were fine and they must be doing something right to still be there with this type of venture. Food great with speedy and pleasant service.

The Victory, Cardiff

The advertising for this place is very true so it's copied here.....lets hope the other Village Hotels are the same! Our first visit, won't be the last.
The Victory pub & kitchen.

Savour the drinks, relish the food , enjoy the company

Think of your favourite local, but with a modern twist and loads of character.

Here you can meet old friends and make new acquaintances over a few rounds of your favourite tipple - including local brews, guest beers and a full range of alcoholic and soft drinks. All in a real pub atmosphere with friendly, knowledgeable staff.

Feeling a bit peckish? Then flick through the menu for some mouth-watering classics from the kitchen.

One of the reasons we look out for this chain's venues is the buildings used. Worth a look just for that reason. Good range of ales for a Lloyds bar.
