The Railway Tavern, Chelmsford

No idea why nobody has reviewed this pub more recently than 2016. It's a cracking place for a drink, great range of real ales, friendly staff and a lot more room following last year's refurbishment. Chelmsford & Mid-Essex CAMRA pub of the year for 2018 against very stiff opposition. Well worth a visit.

Hop Beer Shop, Chelmsford

Excellent beer shop 'mini pub' with a great and constantly changing selection of real ales, ciders and perrys. Unbelievable selection of bottled beers from all over the world. Great staff who are bot knowledgeable and very friendly. Definitely worth a visit if you are in town.

The Three Elms, Chignal St James

This really is an excellent 'country' pub serving an ever changing selection of real ales along with a very impressive selection of ciders and perries. The pub won the Mid Essex CAMRA Cider poub of the year award in 2015. Food is excellent and locally sourced. Only a couple or three miles from the city centre but definitely worth a visit.

The Orange Tree, Chelmsford

Cannot believe that nothing new has been written about this gem since June 2011. Its my 'local' so perhaps I am biased but it is worth noting that the beer (huge range), service and food continue to be top notch. Silent Mike, the landlord, knows his beers and you will never be served an ale that is anything other than excellent. Anything delivered to Mike that is 'not quite right' goes straight back. Still well worth a visit.

The Carriers, Stockton

Recently reopened under new ownership. Serving three real ales all from Plain Ales Brewery at the time of my visit. Arty Farty, Inntrigue and Sheep Dip. All three were excellent and my personal favourite was the Inntrigue at 4.2%. Very friendly pub with Mac and Anna, the new owners providing a very friendly welcome along with Laura who used to run the pub. No food available at the moment but the old chef is returning and a menu will be available from mid-September. Well worth a visit.

The Shibden Mill Inn, Halifax

This truly a gem of a pub in the relative real ale desert of Halifax. Three resident real ales with another three guest beers normally available. Great staff, outstanding food and really friendly locals. I'd agree with the comments previously regarding the specially produced Shibden Mill Ale from Moorhouses, an excellent ale.

The Orange Tree, Chelmsford

Recently (February 2008) taken over by Silent Mike Collins, he of Queen's Head fame and reknown, and whilst this was always reported as a reasonable local back street pub it is now transformed. Still a Grays pub but Silent has introduced additional real ales to the mix and jettisoned some of the smothflows to boot. Annoying music has gone and the majority of the Queen's Head regulars have relocated. Hopefully the old OT regulars will stay. Plans are afoot to revamp the pub merging the two separate bars in the near future. Well worth a visit.

The Marquess of Anglesey, Covent Garden

Visited a couple of weeks ago for a reunion with some ex work colleagues. What an excellent pub. Reasonable range of real ales and well kept. We ate there also and found the food to be excellent also. Will definitely use this one again when I'm in the area.

The Walkabout, Brighton

Agree with the previous comments 100%. Not somewhere I'd want to revisit in a hurry. Plastic glasses don't add tothe ambience but do explain rather a lot about the place.

The Lord Nelson, Southwold

Wow! What an absolute treasure. Great beer, great food, great staff, great location and a really friendly clientele. An absolute pleasure bereft of any annoying jukebox and games machines. My first visit and I felt welcome from the off. Will definitely be making numerous return journeys. A real pub and no mistake.

The Queen's Head, Chelmsford

How this pub isn't scoring 10 out of 10 still continues to amaze me. ahscum hit the nail right on the head "the best Real Ale Pub in Chelmsford".

The Queen's Head, Chelmsford

Couldn't agree more. An excellent Pub. Great and varied beer and well kept. Friendly bar staff, great food and the best stand up comedian in Essex (SilentMike the Guv'nor).

The QH is well worth a visit if you're looking for a proper pub without the usual plastic paraphenalia.

Cheers mike keep up the good work.
