The Square and Compass, Worth Matravers

I'm not sure it's possible to describe the magnificence of this pub - you just have to visit and be drawn into its charms. Very rustic, open fires, beer from the keg, pasties are the only food and there is a little museum attached. It looks like nothing has changed for hundreds of years and I hope it never does.

The Battle of Trafalgar, Brighton

Just a skip from Brighton station and you are at the Battle. Sorry smokers, but the smoking ban has put this back on my list of favourite pubs in Brighton. It's friendly and a proper traditional pub. The food menu looks quite good but I've not tried it. This pub is great for a summer drink as its garden is quite large for such a central pub. Interesting interior - worth the short walk up the hill from the station!

The Lord Nelson, Brighton

This is a proper old fashioned pub where you can relax back and just enjoy being somewhere that's not manufactured and formulaic. One of the best pubs in brighton for good beers and a genuine atmosphere. Lovely!

Prestonville Arms, Brighton

This pub seems popular with a wide mix of people. It's really welcoming and we make a point of visiting when we want to relax with the Sunday papers or to chat with friends. The background music is just the right level - no irritating booming noise to shout over! We often eat here and the food in recent months has got better and better - lots of interesting but a reasonably priced specials, yummy roasts and curries on a Wednesday. It has been taken over by fullers, and the signs outside are new, but the staff, the beers and the friendly atmosphere are as good as ever - it's one of my favourite pubs in Brighton, but make sure you check out the map on the website as it's quite well hidden. They let dogs in too.
