The Kings Arms, Stowmarket

A pub that has opened and bucks the recent trend of familiar pub closures, must be doing something right?

Great varietal beer choices always two offerings from Woodfords at the weekend and three others cask options with a concentration on locally sourced and equally important sensibly priced brews. The resulting pints are consistently well kept and you benefit from this dedication to quality driven by a landlady who really knows her ale.

Next time you hop off the train at Stow, the pub is just opposite, or have an hour to chat in a beer garden during the warmer summer evenings this is your place!

The Elephant and Castle, Eyke

Hurrah!

The reopening of this once very popular local is always worthy of a celebration. A very pleasant couple and family have invested in providing the people of Eyke a vital community venue.

One of the best kept pints of Adnams around, hopefully some more local ales will pay the E and C a requisite visit, do the same and support your local!

The White Horse, Edwardstone

Good evens!

What a fantastic pub, brewery and campsite (all on the same site)

The ethos of the place has to be commended with locally sourced ingredients utilised in both the brewing process and the kitchen. Local ciders the beers brewed on−site are unique and worth sampling, then order up BIG!

People who care are what make this place a pleasure to visit, I suggest you do the same and witness the wind turbine, photovoltaics and solar thermals in action. Discuss the merits of the former whilst supping fino ale and scoffing tasty eateries before returning to your tent/cabin!

The Lion, Needham Market

BIG improvement, if you like ale then there is now a venue in Needham Market for you, with a good choice once settled!

Wherry and Adnams, the local bests, are well kept and there is always a quest ale to sample. The draft lager is a high quality Belgian import with additional choices of bottled ciders.

Cant comment on the food, but the bar service was very genial!

The Plough Inn, Wissett

Wow what an improvementPopped in after an afternoon cycling for a quick pint, ended up sampling 5 jars of beautifully kept ales (including two I have never sampled before).

The place has undergone a transformation by the new family from Hertfordshire with new chairs and outdoor seating, an excellent pub menu, outstanding beers and both doors now open.though of course as a Suffolk tradition you should always exit the same door you enteredIf I remembered on this occasion well done me, however pushing the bike home was a chore for the now wobbly bob!

One final note a Beer festival is planned for the end of July, Hurrah..!!

Pant Yr Ochain, Gresford

Wow, nice location..! The menu looked outstanding with lots of seasonal fare and regional produce; sadly for us we couldnt reserve a table for the evening meal as it was fully booked, not a mean feat considering the size of the place. Excellent ales (there was a minimum of five to choose from with two local ales) also a fine array of bottled continental beer and an extensive wine list..

We picked up our pints and settled in a bay window surrounded by a library, the beer was outstanding! Sadly if there is a criticism it was that the doors were open everywhere, with the central heating on and a raging fire going in the middle of June..? Not very environmental, but I suppose it was so hot in places to accommodate the varying ages of the cliental??

The Sorrel Horse, Barham

The pub is set in a wooded area which provides shade where required and has a large beer garden with seating and an extensive play area. Also nice touches are the horses in the adjoining field who observe the humans at play.

When we arrived mid-aft the inside was half-full and lots of families outside enjoying the sun. We settled in for a pint, however sadly the same criticisms exist in this service industry such as what service? tsk!. There were 3 ales (Adnams, Spitfire + one other) I plumped for the Spitfire and my larger drinking companion shunned the lager on tap and went for BecksThe beer wasnt great and the service was shocking to the extent that in between grunts from the young woman she whisked away the menu as I was studying it?! Settling down for a pint outside in the beer garden we eventually found a less sticky table, polished off our drinks quickly and left the families to enjoy their fried food and poor pints.

Three Horseshoes, Milton Keynes

Stayed a couple of nights in this very friendly community boozer just outside of Milton Keynes. The food was pleasant, the dcor and accommodation comfortable and the beer outstanding. Had a couple of pints of their guest ales and one from a local brewery all were well kept and very tasty. Worth a visit if your in the area!!

Ye Olde Coach and Horses Inn, Melton

My word! Popped in here on the way back from town one evening and was impressed by the look of the place. Inside it was bright and clean and the menus were loaded so we bought a pint and settled down only to observe the following exchange..An older retired gentleman asked for some water so he and his wife could take some tablets and the older lady behind the bar refused to give them tap water (illegal) and promptly charged them for some bottled water making the fella feel unnecessarily uneasy with the exchange. So instead of trying the food we left sharpish.! A shocking example of UK customer service, the beer was ok.

The Retreat, Stowupland

A Large modern boozer with two bars, pool table and small eating area, situated off the main road with a light and airy interior and excellent parking, also the added advantage of a chippy next door. New owners have just taken over, the pint of IPA was well kept, however as with the majority of GK owned premises there is little else to tempt the ale drinker. Good luck to the new owners, we will pop in again when the food is on and to check if there are any new ales arriving

29 Jan 2008 20:41

The Skinners Arms, Machynlleth

A biggish boozer with two bars, pool table and small eating area situated on the main road but the interior is poorly lighted. Ale kept with Black Sheep (run out by 9pm) and a winter ale, there was also Marstons on draught-flow. was well

The Windmill on the Common, Clapham Common

Outstanding location, excellent for sitting outside and observing the world go by during the summer months and a Youngs public house as well. Been many times over the years but this was my first trip back since the beer moved to Bedfordshire (Charles Wells) and after reading a recommendation on a CAMERA (and cricket) publication.

The environment inside is now more Hotel foyer/brew-pub than bar with rather unusual lighting for the main service areaThe service is polite, when you get served, in fact the pub is run almost exclusively by antipodeans. The beer is average, the food is average (the brekkies was especially greasy!!).nothing of note to recommend this boozer over any other, with its history and location it could do better.

The Eagle Ale House, Clapham

Nice! Had the good fortune to stumble on this fine hostilely a couple of years ago and as a result always pop in for an excellent pint of ale form the outstanding choices available whenever Im in the area.

A real community pub with outstanding service and a jovial cliental, numerous mutts included (just taking the dog for a walk.?!) makes this, for London, a stand-out boozer! Popped in with the extended family over Christmas and tucked into some award winning ales (4 to choose from and excellently kept!!), excellent offings of bottled continental lagers, clean toilets etc etc..

The Red Lion, Needham Market

The RED Lion run by Jan Wise, an experienced chef and landlord, has moved to a completely vegetarian menu in these enlightened non-smoking times. This is a lovely old boozer, ample seating and with plenty of parking. Its a Green King Pub but they have made a real effort to stock plenty of special ales and lagers in the bottle form

Outstanding vegetarian options, we tried the mushroom, chestnut and Roquefort pate followed by squash, spinach and pine nut pancakes and finally chocolate brownies for dessert! All washed down with excellent pints of Old Speckled Hen. It has become acceptable that chefs have to put a veggie option on however it is so often unimaginatively lousy! As a result of that and potential cross-contamination we choose not to eat out! However for those wishing to try veggie food and for established veggies this is an excellent venue and well worth a visitENJOY.!!

22 Dec 2007 16:45

The Lion, Needham Market

A pub for families in the summer utilising the BIG garden at the rear of the house, it has plenty of parking and a real effort made with the exterior. Also has a lunchtime trade when they crank up the fryers and the grills.

However the food for the lunchtime crowd is very much chicken in a basket and the selection of ales and lagers were you usual Pubmaster fare, Ill have a bottled ale please and must dash..Service from the younger staff members was also highly amusing with the inevitable heavy sigh.!

6 Dec 2007 17:58

The Steamboat Tavern, Ipswich

Ipswichs premier live music pub for up and coming bands, a nice little boozer serving a niche market! Landlady runs a tight shop and the staff are outstanding, ale is well kept and often have a decent continental lager on draft. Odd L-shaped bar, decent sized dance floor and plenty of room outside. An excellent evening out for live tunes.

28 Oct 2007 15:24

The Old Rep, Ipswich

Popped into this SuperPub in its fantastic central Ipswich location in what used to be the old repertory theatre. Had some shocking food..but the service and staff were excellent even if the boozer was half empty? Bottled beers from the continent are your best bet; the Ales/lagers on draft are the UKs usual BIG name nastiness, why oh why do the majority put up with such rubbish?!

Fridays and Saturdays are busy, with the DJ and dance floor on the go. Plenty of room, toilets a trek and although the bar shines the furniture is looking a little grubby as well as goddammit uncomfortable. We had our food, one more bottled Polish lager and departed, not to return again in the near future..

28 Oct 2007 15:11

The Cherry Tree, Bromeswell

This pub has turned around, have always avoided it for the last five years due to the Fried Smell that has emanated from the premises on every passing..! Now the food is tasty and decent value and there are areas for eaters, people with children (with nice BIG garden) and a nice bar with well kept Adnams however poor offerings for the lager drinkers as the usual tasteless fare is served.

Staff were pleasant and the landlord made you feel very welcome worth a punt and a pint!

28 Oct 2007 14:47

The Lord Nelson, Ipswich

Nice pub! Cracker is you like an Adnams pint with 4 casks ales to choose from on our last visit and all were spot on! Everyone was tucking into what looked like decent fare around us, I took a peek at the menu and plenty to choose from but not much for a veggie.!! Plenty of history to review re: The Lord himself on the walls and beams/posts if your partner darts off for an extended toilet break

Staff were friendly, ceilings are low (obviously due to the size of the people of the age!) and its location just off the new developments at the docks makes it a great location.

28 Oct 2007 14:09

The Limes Hotel, Needham Market

Needham Market is a sorry place to search for real ales and a disaster for a lager drinker! Green King rules the roost here and sometimes a nice IPA is available!? Again unfortunately for lager consumers nothing but the usual suspects on draft, tasteless BIG name brands stacked full of additives, lovely! Occasionally there is a choice ale.Be lucky!

Apparently the music nights are a great event; it does reasonable food (Two meals for price of one on Tuesdays), plenty of parking and plenty of room to seat and chat! Inside it is a lovely bar (Bugs Bar) and the bar staff are always pleasant as it shares itself with the Limes Hotel.

28 Oct 2007 13:59

The Swan Inn, Needham Market

Needham Market is a sorry place to search for real ales, on the few occasions we have entered this establishment one of our party has experienced:

The bar staff holding onto his beer money change
A pint of Carling poisoning! Not a pretty sight
Shocking service from the younger female bar staff
An altercation with one of the locals in the beer garden that was intimidatory

Apparently the music night is a great event; it does food, plenty of parking, nice gardens and has a pool table! However if it is a decent pint you after avoid nothing but the usual suspects on draft, tasteless BIG name brands stacked full of additives, lovely!

28 Oct 2007 13:46

The Dove, Ipswich

Wow! Another fine hostilely! On a par with Ipswichs other fine real ale pub The Fat Cat but a little closer to the town centre. There was 16 Ales to choose from, again our small group got through the collection of best, ambers, milds and darks all of excellent quality. Ordered a few warm bar snacks, a plate from the Bar-B-Q and settled in to watch the Rugby on the main screen outside.

The main bar was very busy on the Sat aft we went and space in general is a little cramped if you are unlucky enough not to find a pew! There is also plenty to choose from with regards to continental lagers and ciders if real ale isnt your bag! A classic that is now nearing greatness, book the afternoon/evening out with friends and enjoy..!

28 Oct 2007 13:36

The Gardeners Arms, Moats Tye

A gift of a boozer/fine eatery in Mid-Suffolk, if a little off the beaten track, situated next door to Battisford CC. Friendly staff and excellent landlords, the food is fresh, seasonal and delicious and there are always 3 tasty real ales to consume in ever increasing quantities.

Whether to pop in for a beer, meet with friends for a tasty lunch or a glamorous night out to impress your parents this is an excellent choice. Plenty of parking and on the junction of some picturesque walking routes, settle in and get comfortable.!

4 Oct 2007 10:56

The Fat Cat, Ipswich

Yep! Ipswichs best pub14 Ales on tap, 4 outstanding international lagers and a variety of tasty treats in bottle form. No Stella or Carling allowed in the door here!!

Managed to sample all the ales between us, several tables enjoyed their pints whilst tucking into ordered takeaways encouraging a truly grand atmosphere.! Also we were graced by the presence of the pubs fat cat who seemed to approve of the increasing chaos as beers were followed by more beer.

Bit of a trek to get to on foot from the town centre but what an amazing local this would be?! A cracking night ootenjoy!

The Fat Cat, Ipswich

Wow what a find, catch a train! Well worth the short stroll from the station leaving your car behind in the garage.to sample some fine ales. We tried the best and the gold and both were fresh, extremely tasty and good value! The stronger Gunners Daughter (5%+) was a little scary but made an appearance later in the evening in one of our parties sausages. The wine list was mainly Adnams wines, always a good sign, with many served by the glass!

For a bite to eat, sample the fine rustic food which was predominantly seasonal and reasonably priced, little choice for vegetarians but carnivores and fish eaters will do well scoffing here. The seating is in all wood and the natural light is excellent; plenty of room at the bar and the service was pleasant enough being busy for a Wednesday evening. New owners for the last year and they are keeping the flag flying for BrewPubs, go for gold..and of course Beer is Best..!

The Elephant and Castle, Eyke

Mixed bag?! The beer festival was a roaring success with 10 kegs of outstanding ales to choose from and a Bar-B-q in the afternoon.sat in the beautiful garden before venturing inside to dance the night away with the live band and 80 others.

Went back a week later and the atmosphere was completely the opposite had a nasty pint of ale, took a turn and was then lectured by some breeders! Talk about chalk and cheese, pick your evening with great care and ask for a fresh pint.

13 Sep 2007 21:27

The Douglas Bader, Martlesham Heath

Not an enjoyable experience, lots of children the food was very chicken in a basket and of the two ales Green King IPA (Is it me or is this pint nothing of note now?) and Adnams (off that day) left me free to drive home!

However the staff were excellent and the atmosphere friendly with good access for the disabled and elderly with plenty of space for children and the heath in front of you!

13 Sep 2007 21:15

The Wheelhouse, Naughton

A beautiful thatched community/local boozer, with some of the best kept pints and one of the widest selections of real ales in the area set in a beautiful part of Mid-Suffolk. Nancy the landlady certainly knows how to keep a pint and makes all guests very welcome.

Our taxi driver/social organiser recommended this to us and it turned out to be a fantastic evening with the locals from the area and other guests mixing in and joining in the frivolity. An outstanding public house but as mentioned before get directions! I couldnt tell you myself as our Taxi dropped us off, popped in to check if everything was alright a couple of hours later and then picked us up a couple of hours after that, now that is a service!!

13 Sep 2007 21:05

The Pickerel Inn, Stowmarket

Went on a Saturday and enjoyed an excellent live band, beer was served just right and a good choice of Adnams or Shepards Neam's Spitfire (which I've never had on draft before!)

The landlady was welcoming and the staff were very friendly, an outstanding choice for a night out with live tunes in Stow' and a decent pint!
