White Horse, Ditchling

Dropped in for at lunchtime yesterday after visiting the the museum. Four of us sat in the garden on what was a glorious day. Service was very friendly and the food we ordered was very good with generous portions. The beer battered fish and chips were excellent. I had a pint of Harveys and to be honest it wasn't at it's best (I knew I should of had the Hopead!). But it was another pleasant visit to this pub. Interestingly, on our way back through the village, we noticed that The Bull, Ditchlings second pub which has always lived in the White Horses shadow, was much busier, so perhaps it has moved up a gear. Will pop in when we visit next.

Globe Inn, Rye

This was our second destination after visiting the Standard. The Globe has also undergone a recent refurb. Its a striking building and the internal changes have enhanced its character. There is little standing space but a lot of very comfortable seating. There is no conventional bar but instead a pier/ table. Unisex loo, a metal trough for a sink, lovely open fires, mix of furniture, designer clutter, it all sounds a bit and even contrived but it works. It had a very homely feel.

Again, food is a big feature and although we didn't eat (fish and chips later in Rye) it looked very good although prices were a bit 'Topy'. I had a couple of Pints of Hastings Brewerys offer, which was very nice as were the staff. I'll be back

The Standard Inn, Rye

The Standard has has undergone a major refurb and now offers B&B.

When we visited on a Sunday afternoon, the place was packed, with what looked like a few regulars at the bar, a handful of dogs and a lot of families eating. Food is now a big feature of in the Pub and what I saw looked good prices seemed sensible (for Rye) too. I had just the one pint of Farmers ale as there was nowhere to sit or for that matter stand, without having to move and let people by. The Farmers Ale (which I hadn't had before) was fresh tasting and well kept. A nice pint and it was selling well.

The refurb is of a high quality its an attractive place, if a little formulaic but I do miss the old Standard and its eccentric clientele. It was dark, grubby but had a character you just don't find anymore.

The Alma, Crystal Palace

It is very expensive. Also, I've never had a decent pint of ale there. They normally have an interesting selection but it is poorly kept and this issue predates the current management so perhaps there is a problem with the cellar. Shame because in terms of decor etc its not a bad pub.

The Grape and Grain, Crystal Palace

Went in on Thursday last week, four people at the bar. Tumbleweed central.

It appears that the owners are seriously miffed by the pub not having made it into this years Camara good beer guide. So what did they do? They stopped the 50p discount on ales and cider for Camara members. And the result? We have all gone across the road to The Westow House or the Wetherspoons.

As much as I like The G&G (see my previous post), I'm not paying West End Prices in SE19.

The Grape and Grain, Crystal Palace

A haven for ale drinkers, offering a regularly changing selection of perfectly kept beers. Its Sunday Jazz sessions are great and for my money it is now the best pub in the district. Not many comfy chairs or soft furnishings but a good honest boozer. Its an example of how to turn a dodgy, dump of a pub into a proper local.

The Carpenters Arms, Limpsfield Chart

Went for lunch there yesterday. Despite the cold and the snow it was pretty much full. During the day it concentrates on food and I have to say they do it rather well. Their fish and chips were near faultless and the steak pie was very good. As you would expect, the ale was very well kept and the pub interior has been refurbished and redecorated without losing its character. Downsides? I suspect the focus on catering means that if you just want a pint or three, finding somewhere to sit might be a challenge and the wait for the food to arrive was too long (35 mins). Nevertheless, it's another great addition to Westerham Brewerys small but perfectly formed portfolio of pubs.
