The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping

Before entering, go down Pelican steps onto the foreshore, sniff the history. After that the pub, newly redecorated but with the bar top intact and in it's state of architectural chaos, can still delight. On a lovely evening it was a pleasure to loll over the terrace rail and watch the river go by. Drink was O.K. - the food will wait on another visit. Staff were pleasant.

The Blind Beggar, Whitechapel

Sorry - amendment to my previous, which should read "over forty years later..." Thanks.

The Blind Beggar, Whitechapel

Oh dear! My use of this place goes back to the difficult days of the 1960s but when you could get a marvellous pork and onion roll in Bloom's bread, but left before 8 in the evening. It served beautiful beer, originally from the then-attached brewery. Now - after over twenty years later almost unrecognisable. The bar is totally out of shape compared with the inside of the building (go - youll see what I mean). I drank formula cider. There are, though, two very good points : an especially fine beer garden and a superb cat, whose deportment suggested that he was actually the licencee!. But is there a decent pub on Whitechapel High Strret now? I feel sorry for the staff of the world's best hospital across the road; they deserve better.

The George, Temple

On recent visits have found the beers reasonable and the range of wines by the glass decently priced if rather much of a muchness. Staff are pleasant and efficient. Main concerns are with the food : it does not live up to expectation - "crusty" the rolls were not - and yesterday the batter pudding of my Toad in the Hole was like concrete. I feared for my teeth and left much of it, although the sausage was nice.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

Perhaps a rating of 7/10 is harsh, but it is the sort of place which demands the highest standards. On the plus side are the Sam Smith's at knockdown prices and good quality, the incredible building, it's history and ambience, along with it's pivotal location. I was in a way reminded of the beloved "Nellie's" in Beverley. Food (not sampled on my most recent visit) appears better than many places offer. Less welcome was the inability of some staff to be able to hold a short conversation - owing to language problems? Remains a must-repeat place, however. Maybe I should think less and simply wallow.

The Red Lion, Pall Mall

A place to warm the heart. Fine location, very well kept beers, happy atmosphere with pleasant staff. Solid regular trade evident. History underplayed but I suppose their is enough in the immediate area to last anyone for a lifetime! Certainly the place of choice in the locality.

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

Only the location and the enchanting history lived up to expectations. Beer was decent, ambience a little 'far-off' although quite pleasant. Didn't try food. Will look forward to checking my findings, also another trip to the Chapel in Ely Place.

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

An unadulterated joy. A genuine pub - good ambience, good food, pleasant staff, excellent beer, lovely little mementi of previous regulars and it's own interesting history. A life-enhancing place.

The Ten Bells, Shoreditch

A bit of a dump! Interesting are the fine 'Delft' type tiles on most of two walls and a tile mural, also a double pair of extremely tatty seats from the 'Gaiety' and a ceiling so badly plastered as to show the disposition of rooms in a previous life. Looks as though it has been neglected for years. Beers tolerable only. Location mildly interesting.
