The Social, Islington

This has closed down, I think.

The Alwyne Castle, Islington

Nice enough selection of beers and wines, but not much atmosphere and the service is terrible. You'd be better off heading to the Snooty Fox or hitting Upper Street and going down to the King's Head.

The Snooty Fox, Canonbury

Cool place. Deuchars IPA on tap. Nice looking Wurlitzer juke box with very limited selection. Big soft sofas, but the layout of the seating is awful. One of the better places in the area though.

The Fountain, Islington

Legendary place. Great music. Great Guinness. Not great if you don't fancy imbibing the black stuff though. Bar staff once called me a c**t but I forgave them. One of the best pubs in the area definitely. Possibly not one for the over 40s though.

The Charles Dickens, Southwark

Great selection of ales that change regularly. Also excellent burgers. The landlord, Andy, tries to get to know everyone who comes in. Not the most attractive of places though and the Sky TV's a bit annoying. Cosier and much friendlier than the Windmill and less poncey than the Anchor and Hope, I'd say this is my favourite boozer in the area. Closed on Saturdays though.

The Barley Mow, Shoreditch

Okay. Some of you people are ridiculous! You want to drink lager, but you don't like Czech beer. You want to go out drinking on the Curtain Road, but you complain about people with silly haircuts. This place is well jackson. Come on down and get startled.

The Sherlock Holmes, Charing Cross

A bog-standard pub in general appearance with a deceivingly pleasant exterior. Stupid prices (2.70 for a London Pride, you're 'aving a laugh!), badly pulled (would you like a flake in that, luv?), terrible selection of beers and food. You'd be better off buying a couple of cans from Tesco Metro and sitting on the riverside.

Ye Olde Swiss Cottage, Swiss Cottage

A real taste of Switzerland. In case you've never been, Switzerland is notorious for its cheap beer, smokey interiors, love of chintz and hunting imagery and its population of drama students, alcoholic old ladies who go nuts if you sit in their chairs and other down-and-outs. There are 'better' pubs in the area, but they're not worth paying twice as much per pint for now, are they?

The Prince Albert, Notting Hill

When I was last here some bloke chucked up all over the floor. There are lots of beautiful people here, which may make you feel ugly, inferior and dribbly. It certainly made me feel like that. It is expensive. The theatre upstairs is really good, but is not actually connected to the pub.

The Clifton Wine Bar, Clifton

Nice enough, crypt-like interior. Good beer garden. Full of students, most of the time, oiling themselves up before hurtling down the hill to 'the Lounge'. Ales here aren't good, but nice wine selection. Still got a bit of a soft spot for the ol' place, despite myself.

The Berkeley, Clifton

Okay. This is a Spoons', so obviously it's a bit dirty and full of alcoholic old men. The food is cheap and so is the beer. There's a reason for this. Generally, the food's bad, but just about edible if you use enough ketchup and mayonnaise. The beer is okay, most of the time, although they don't clean out the pipes very often, so sometimes you'll get a pint and it'll be undrinkable. There is the underlying threat of violence here on a Friday or Saturday night.

The Highbury Vaults, Bristol

Brains and Smiles on tap. Billiards table. Pub garden (heated in the winter). Lovely wood panelled interior. Sign saying 'Don't ask silly questions'. Top stuff. The food's a bit dodgy at times, but not bad if you're really hungry. All in all, a great pub and extremely close to the Bristol University English Department, which was convenient for me in my time there.

The Old Red Lion, Islington

Decent enough pub theatre. The beer's a bit pricey. The theatre upstairs has some good stuff on sometimes, but used to be a lot better.

The Walkabout, Angel, Islington

Used to come here a lot as a teenager, as it was open late and free to get in. It was crap then, but now it's even worse, more expensive and they charge to get in. The idea of paying money and, quite possibly, queueing to get into this dive doesn't even bear thinking about.

The Living Room, Islington

Really expensive, terrible beer. They sometimes have a pianist/singer. He is dreadful. It is full of estate agents. They prance around and think they are cool. They're not.

The Keston Lodge, Islington

This isn't a pub. It's a bar. They have about three varieties of lager that all cost 3, making it probably the most expensive pint on the street. I watched the England v. Portugal match here and their over-head projector wasn't working so everyone had to gather around a tiny little TV in the corner. This place really is crap. God knows why people queue to get in.

13 Dec 2004 14:58

The Albion, Barnsbury

This is definitely a summer pub. The inside isn't particularly nice, but the garden is glorious on a hot summer's day. Watch out for a few of the barstaff. One of them's a real truncheon polisher. The drinks are only slightly over-priced.

The Hop and Berry, Islington

There are better Gastropubs in Islington, but the food here is still of an extremely high standard. They have a good wine list and a decent selection of beers. Probably not somewhere you'd want to come and spend the whole evening, but you could do a lot worse for dinner.

13 Dec 2004 14:49

Anam, Islington

This place is open late. They technically have a pitiful selection of beers on tap, but they turn these off after about eleven on the pretext that "they don't have enough staff". The barman told me that he could make a cocktail faster than he could pour a pint. Moron! They only thing they could get me was a terrible pint of Guiness. This place might be alright if you want to drink cocktails (although Santa Fe on Upper Street is streets ahead) and want to listen to crappy house music, but I'd rather drink Special Brew on the Green, to be perfectly honest. Truly awful.

13 Dec 2004 14:45

The Gatehouse, Highgate

It's a Spoons', so any comments about it being full of alcoholic old men, understaffed and slightly dirty are sort of stating the obvious. It's cheap. Much cheaper than the pubs near here and as far as Spoons' go it's not that hideous. I think the building is an old Almshouse and it's supposed to be haunted. There are obviously much better places in Highgate, but if you fancy a cheap pint, the Gatehouse isn't half bad.

13 Dec 2004 14:37

The Wrestlers, Highgate

The Wrestlers' is not the best pub in the world. That's a ridiculous thing to say. It is an attractive, dark wood panelled boozer with a good selection of spirits and an uninspired selection of beers. The small pub garden is right next to the toilet and, to be quite frank, it stinks. The bar staff are surly. Also, I have recently heard that it has been infested by barflies.

13 Dec 2004 14:27

The Flask, Highgate

This is a legendary pub that was almost completely ruined by a hideously assanine refurbishment a few years ago. It is also ridiculously expensive and the food is just tarted-up pub grub at three times the normal price. In the summer, it is a great place to hang out, but, since most people end up sitting on the lawn across the road from the Flask rather than the pub garden itself, why not just get a few cans of beer from the shop for a fraction of the price? Used to be a great pub to go to in the winter as well as summer, but it's rubbish now and the bar staff are crap.

13 Dec 2004 14:24

The Old Duke, Bristol

The Old Duke is a fantastic Bristolian pub. With its low ceilings and dreadlocked bar staff, it really couldn't be anywhere else. The bands here are of a very impressive standard and I have heard them play D'Angelo (late nineties soul singer) so that's rubbish about them only playing incredibly old stuff. It gets pretty crowded, particularly at weekends, but that's just because people know that it's wicked. Last time I was there, a couple were dancing to the music in the street outside. Now that's the sign of a good pub! Cheers.

13 Dec 2004 14:17

The Kings Head, Islington

The King's Head is the only decent pub on Upper Street. It's open late. They have Adnam's and Young's beer on tap. It has a theatre in the back (not a comedy venue upstairs). The doors are perfectly easy to use for any normal human being. It has live music every night: usually jazz, but sometimes folk or reggae. In the winter, there is a proper fire with proper coal. They don't take credit cards and they have old fashioned till. They have only just stopped charging in shillings. The bar staff are, for the most part, legends, although they tend to make up the prices on the spot (still cheaper than anywhere other than spoons). Basically, if you don't like this place, you don't know anything about pubs or drinking or living and really there is no hope for you. You probably like watching friends and drinking Jacob's Creek. Well, good luck to you. But, just so you know, come the revolution, you'll be first up against the wall. Cheers.
