The Toucan, Soho

£4.40 for a pint of rough, cold (despite not asking for cold) Guinness; £4.70 for a small sub-Gallo methanol-and-Ribena rosé.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on the Guinness as it's usually not so bad.

The Coach and Horses, Soho

Once nice and dark, now not.

Buy a dimmer switch Fuller's.

The Sutton Arms, Clerkenwell

A quality little boozer of the old-school. Landlord a decent sort.

The Plough, Clapham Junction

Smartly inoffensive but predictable modern fit-out spoiled by frankly criminal pricing - 4.80 and 5 a pint for lager.

Food not bad, but, again, 25% too expensive for where it is (13.50 for a burger and chips is pushing it in these environs).

I'm sure it will do well.

The Swag and Tails, Knightsbridge

Bought by Ecclestone's daughter (apparently his local, although I never saw Napoleon himself in there).

No doubt the plans for the next Punch Bowl are already well-advanced.

The Glasshouse Stores, Piccadilly Circus

Sam Smith's, so you know what to expect.

Bad drains odour which seems to permeate the locale, and not just the boozer.

Market Tavern, Mayfair

Perhaps better than it should be, although it's already looking a bit tired and the food was so-so at best (to be expected if you watch the pre-prepared fare being offloaded into the cellar).

Entertaining for the enraged stares from the old buffer in the flat opposite who is not impressed by this place's increased popularity.

The Draft House, Battersea

Shut.

The Red Lion, Mayfair

Planning application made for a residential development, retaining only the facade of the pub ...

Coach and Horses, Mayfair

Entirely unexceptional and probably the better for it.

Lights a bit bright for my delicate complexion.

The Punch Bowl, Mayfair

Another recent visit saw the first evidence of a 3.90 pint of cooking bitter.

Packed full of unmentionables. Landlord's wrist-bling still in evidence.

The Grenadier, Belgravia

STOP PRESS!

Native English-speaker identified behind bar!

Must state that I've never had the misfortune to encounter a footballer in here.

The Grenadier, Belgravia

Should be, could be, great.

Never identified the landlord or landlady in the many times I've been there and the usual Eastern European teenagers behind the bar are a poor substitute.

Completely killed by its inclusion in seemingly every bloody London tourist guide published in the past five years and by the fact it enjoys milking them for every drop (see restaurant).

The Red Lion, Pall Mall

Proper pub, nicely worn-in, not too many tourists and decent staff (and what a difference it makes).

A pleasing way to spend an afternoon.

16 Jan 2009 11:57

The Audley, Mayfair

Tourist trap, which is a shame (anywhere with those menus tells you all you need to know).

Usual language problems at the bar.

You wouldn't make a trip for the beer, but it's not a bad stop-off.

16 Jan 2009 11:49

The Kings Arms, Mayfair

Upstairs better than down, full of sticky, dark wood.

As for food - you'd need your head read to even consider eating anything more than a bag of crisps in a place like this, so you get what you deserve. Leave it to the Italian tourists.

16 Jan 2009 11:38

Ye Grapes, Mayfair

Not cheap and was better inside before they repainted it poorly (twice).

Apparently serve Thai food (how novel) these days, although I've never seen anyone risk it.

Still a regular stop-off despite the poor value, grotty decor, disinterested staff and overcrowding.

16 Jan 2009 11:34

The Only Running Footman, Mayfair

Bad before the "makeover", much worse after.

Certainly not a pub.

16 Jan 2009 11:29

The Punch Bowl, Mayfair

Since Mr Ritchie's arrival this place has not only become ludicrously expensive, it's also ludicrously busy. Whereas you would once find the usual post-work crowd in during the week, it now attracts a hanger-on clientele who don't really fit the location.

We were actually turned away by the bouncer(!) a couple of Fridays gone. Staggering.

At least Guy's cash is keeping the landlord in flashy watches. Silver lining and all that.

16 Jan 2009 11:26

The Red Lion, Mayfair

Disappointing - a decent stop-off on the Mayfair rounds where one could nearly always find a seat.

I note that it's still featured as being open in some of the 2009 pub guides, which suggests they haven't done their homework.
