The Earl of Essex, Islington

They've got some things right here, including the beer. It's a bit more cool than The Craft, more spacious than the the Euston Tap, but the prices - ouch!

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

After watching the unfortunate decline, over a couple of awful years, of a once legendary pub; I visited for the "soft" opening at the weekend and was very pleasantly surprised. Tried 5 ales - all good, together with a couple of keg Pilsners, ditto. The place has been restored, not ruined and one thing has improved by miles - the staff were not drunk, incompetent or abusive. Let's hope it's a success for the new Guvnor, great as Steve and Will were in their pomp.

The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane

Matski57 obviously doesn't get this place. The old Aussie he refers to is the owner Roxy, a west end and Soho legend of the Norman from The Coach mould of proprietor. If you don't have the personality to impose yourself, in the time honoured tradition of the real British pub, then best to give this great old place a miss.
