The Earl Beatty, Motspur Park

Khazis were absolutely rancid on Sunday night (and before anyone asks that was before I used them). If anyone had considered ordering food before using them they would have lost their appetite. Drains need a good seeing to.

The Earl Beatty, Motspur Park

Official Saturday opening was good - even had Ray Dorset from Mungo Jerry performing! 3 ales on which is good and new carpets, furniture, lighting a vast improvement although the gents loos don't seem to have changed at all! New management seems very switched on, if they keep the pub in good and clean order, inside and out, it should do well.

The Earl Beatty, Motspur Park

For once the parent company (SpiritGroup) has listened to and met with disgruntled locals who were fed up with their only local pub falling further and further into disrepair and neglect. Well its now in the middle of a long awaited refurbishment - new signs, new carpets, new furniture, new manager, new decor, hopefully new WC facilities as last ones were terrible. Re-opens at end of the week with promise of more ales to choose from so expect a plethora of comments/feedback in coming weeks. Pay and Display Car park now to deter station using fly parkers. Oh and dogs no longer allowed inside (garden only) and whilst Stan is a bit put out that he won't be able to snarfle up all the dropped crisps and peanuts any more I suppose it is understandable.

The Masons Arms, Stapleton

Went there on Friday with a friend of mine who was a regular. Great little pub, the locals were all very friendly and warned me as a visiting Londoner on the dangers of too much Black Rat! Bar staff friendly, made us sandwiches even though kitchen closed, wish I had a pub like this in my neighbourhood. Then again, probably best I don't as I would spend far too much time in it.....

The Black Bull, Blaydon

Excellent pub, well kept ale, went here with my father in law last week, it is his local. Very friendly proprietors and regulars, even when they have a Londoner in their midst.

The White Swan, Holborn

Went there for the first time today with 4 business colleagues and am compelled to leave instant feedback.

Despite this appearing to be a pub, upon entering barman demanded to know whether we would be eating or just drinking. If only the latter he would be requisitioning the table for diners.

We decided to eat. Menu looked good, not cheap, but clearly some thought had gone into it.

3 x fishcakes (11.50 each), 1 x Aberdeen Angus Burger (10.50), 1 x Cheese Ploughmans (7.50).

The four hot dishes were excellent and tasty. Advice for future customers - never order a Ploughman's. It was the most miserable, meanest, excuse for a dish ever seen. 2 modest pieces of cheese, half an apple, various pickles and HALF yes HALF a slice of bread.

Unbelieveably, when pointing this out to same barperson he said that despite this appearing on the menu as a main couse, as it was nearer in price to starters this was reflected in the portion size!!! We asked if more bread could be made available. Certainly but this would be charged as an extra.

Whilst a fascinating insight into their pricing/portion control procedure the general demeanour of the barman was pretty unpleasant/abrasive and did rather spoil the overall experience.

Times are tough for the pub/restaurant business. Judging by previous postings it looks like we are not the only ones who would not return.

The Three Horseshoes, Cranleigh

Spent much of the early 1980's happily ensconced in the "middle bar" when Three Shoes was under control of Mike and Naomi Walker - also worked behind bar at weekends.

Called in with my dad for a couple on a recent visit to Cranleigh. Still a nice place, not much had changed in the Lounge Bar.
