The Kings Arms, Woolwich

What can be said about The Kings Arms Pub in a sentence without it ending in “Eurgh”! This watering hole has a sad history, seeing as it was one of the pubs that was targeted by the IRA in the 1970’s notorious Woolwich and Guildford pub bombing, due to it proximity to Woolwich Barracks. Sorry to say that the subsequent years have been even more cruel. On entering the first thing that hits you is the noise. Did I say music? No, I said “Noise”. Situated near enough in the middle of the floor is a huge sound system that is same as you’ll find on the back a Notting Hill Carnival float. I’m really not kidding. Also the ‘No Smoking’ law apparently does not apply here. I was not in favor of the smoking ban in pubs but hat what the law says but apparently not to the baseball capped and string vested barman who smokes cigarettes quite freely behind the bar. The interior is grubby with two dozen feral street rats running freely around the bar with pool ques. Might I seek refuge in ‘The Garden’? Highly unlikely. The outside area which is now and inside area has been made so by constructing several old wooden doors around the exterior to construct a wall, covered with a sheet of plastic tarpaulin. The ‘garden furniture’ is a mish-mash of what you’d find in a piss-poor charity shop and what ever left garden furniture could be salvaged from a skip. The beer is dear, the glasses dirty and over all it’s quite frankly a dump. This pub is located within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, a borough that has seen many historical pubs close without the Councils consent, Tsk Tsk, yet this abomination is allowed to function. If it were a dog you’d have it put to sleep, if it were a person you’d pay half o’ penny to see it in a Victorian Freak Show. In all, I’d say avoid it like the plague as that is probably what you might catch there.

The Globe, London Bridge

The Globe, On the good side its located within the famous & historical Borough Market SE1. Close to London Bridge, Southark Cathedral, HMS Belfast, the Olde Clink Prison, a near size replica of The Golden Hinde in dock, not to mention that is close to some other very nice pubs so a crawl along the river Thames taking in the Millennium Bridge and The Tate Modern, which the view is great from, is a must. The whole of this area is rapidly becoming gentrified as a result many pubs are becoming increasingly generic. Fortunately The Globe has be saved from this for now at least.
The pub its self is covered partially by a viaduct running in to London Bridge Station, this provides rain cover for those who wish to smoke outside but can be a bit of a shame when its sunny. Inside is very nice as it’s rarely had a redec since the day it opened, the mats and seats are very well worn and the dart board has seen better days. Nice and cosy inside if you can find a place to sit. Its reasonably priced for the area and mid week they have a DJ playing Old Skool Northern Soul on original 7” vinyl. A standard selection of drinks, I haven’t tried the bitters or ales but I've heard no complaints. Bar service does tend to be a bit haphazard depending on who serves you but over all, its OK. Here comes my major Rant. The Gent’s toilets are a bloody disgrace. The door frame on the cubicle is a falling apart as every lock has been busted off and every time you flush - the floor floods…really. Nice pub, just don’t go to the loo.

The Albert, Primrose Hill

I've been to this place a couple of times now and on both occasions I spent the majority of the time in the Garden which I have to say is very nice. Kept reasonably well but be careful if you coming down the steps with a tray of drinks. I didn't experience the bitters & ales there only the lager but this nice tucked away side street pub in Primrose Hill seems a nice enough place to take the friends and family for a Sunday drink, they even allow you to take your dog in which I think more pubs should do, Woof Woof.

The Gunmakers, Clerkenwell

I went to this pub for a friend's Birthday do. Like many little boozers in Clerkenwell and around The City of London, its snugly tucked away down one of the many hidden side streets, this partially adds to its charm. The other is that its as tiny on the inside as it is on the outside but this does mean that internally its an awkward shape resulting in stepping up to one level and crossing the floor to go down to another. It has got a garden/smokers area but I din't go out there so i won't pass comment on it. They serve a variety of of new modern ales from many of London's new micro breweries but the bar service...Hhhmm. The staff are often foreign students who have no idea about working behind a bar and serving people in order. You have to speak very slowly and ask for your pints top be topped up or you'll be getting a pint of head, they have no idea about measures. Thursday and Friday nights are rammed with fashionable young people. Over all though a nice experience.

The Newton Arms, Holborn

Ok, lets face it, this isn't the most prettiest of pubs from the outside but be pateint. Its in a good Central London location bordering both Holborn and Covent Garden and its secluded enough not to be to out of the way or to be swamped with tourist. Its good for watching the match as its roomy and you dont have to strain your neck to get a good view. i thought that the draught ales and bitter have been kept well and the staff are nicely turned out, white shirts, neat ties, nice & traditional. I've only ever gone there on Saturdays so I cant say too much but I do wish the bloody Freemason would not go there en-mass. Each Saturday, after a lot of hand shaking and trouser lifting, they decend on this place and block the entrance with black briefcases. Apart from that, its nice

The Angel, Soho

I last reviewed this pub in Dec 2008 and its amazing how down hill it has gone and the simple reason is the chnage in managament. The previous Land Lord and Lady were great. Always nice to chat too, knew your name and knew what you drank. Now, the new incumbants are never there and when they do bother to show thier faces, it seems like such and effort for them to be bothered in pulling you a pint. If they cant be bothered to run this booza properly then Sam Smiths should replace them with staff who actually want to be there. There is no shortage of couples wanting to take on a pub especially a nice traditional one like this. Speaking of Sam Smiths, when are they going to finish the upstairs renovation and open thhis new up stairs drinking area which seem sto have been going on forever. What a shame. Dogbottle

The Lansdowne, Primrose Hill

Right , first of all I want to say that I want to say nice things about this place as in summer its a great place to sit outside on the pavement and lap up the rays whilst enjoying a drink but it does have major faults. The biggest being that the staff never bother to clear the tables, every time I have gone in I have to clear plates of olives, bread and pizza rinds to place my glass down. They aren't exctly the speedest staff when it comes to getting served, they never seem to get the queing order right. I once went in asked for a pint of Golden (Half Bitter/Half Lager). The response I got was "Your looking at me as if I should know what that is". Well yeah! Your the barman....right? This place place could be so much better if they iron out these tiny faults

The Carlisle Arms, Soho

A genuinly nice boozer. Tucked away down Bateman Street, its a really nice place to get out of the Summer Heat. Also its location make it a great meeting point. Two screens for sport and so they usually put one football match on one screen and cone on another. Can't really get lost in there as it is only one room. if it has any fault, I've got to say that it doesnt hqave the great selection of bitters and the prices arnt exactly wallet friendly but it is definatly worth a visit eacpecially during Sohosd gay prides day as you get a great mix of the wierd and the wonderful

The Intrepid Fox, St Giles

I'd really like to go to the Fox again as I really like the atmosphere and the Newcastle Brown Ale is resonably priced. Yah, ok, its not gonna be the same as the old Intrepid Fox in Soho but then you cant expect it to be. The toilets at the new one are forever getting bunged up but the music is great as you can ask the bar lady what you want and she'll find it on the PC for you. The glass front isnt everyones cup of tea but at least its dark and adds atmosphere. nfortunatly I can't go back there as the idiotic unlicenced door man (I wonder if the local authority knows that?) has barred me as he mistkenly got me mixed withsome else whom he threw out ages ago.

The Angel, Soho

On a rainy winters days, The Angel is the best place to go as it has three real coal fires and is really cosy. One bad thing is that the garden has to shut at 5:45 in the Summer as on a couple of miserable so-&-so's (I want to use stronger words to describe them) I want to use stronger words to describe them, complained.
Whats the point of having a Beer Garden if you cant use it on nice Summer evenings? I cant'e believe that the Samuel Smiths brewery simply submitted to them. Also Sams Smiths have altered the pub grub and you can no longer get a quick sanie. Shame on you Humphry Smith
