The Allied Arms, Reading

The "wonderful garden" is usually competely covered by the huge parasol which was put in place solely for the benefit of filthy smokers. Why don't they take it down when the sun is shining?

The Alehouse, Reading

Excellent beer, but :
1 - a few of the regulars stink to high heaven. Hopefully as the days get warmer the front door will be left open more often to let the stench out
2 - the toilets are a disgrace. The gents was effectively a large puddle for much of last Saturday.

I've heard it rumoured that Rob the landlord is off to pastures new in Cambridge soon. Let's hope the new incumbent can sort out the toilets at least.

The Retreat, Reading

A cracking little pub that would be greatly improved if the licencees would not use it as a store for their junk.

The Jolly Anglers, Reading

Yesterday I overheard the landlady of the nearby Fishermans Cottage discussing a rumour that the Jolly Anglers might be re-opening under a new name - "The Weasel & Commander" !!!

The Bull, Sonning

The Bull is mentioned in Jerome K Jerome's "Three Men in a Boat" and is described thus :

"If you stop at Sonning, put up at the Bull, behind the church. It is a veritable picture of an old country inn, with green, square courtyard in front, where, on seats beneath the trees, the old men group of an evening to drink their ale and gossip over village politics"

As you'll see from the photo above, the trees have long since been cut down, the green courtyard dug up, all to make way for an ugly car park. And yet angryinvienna still sees fit to post a complaint that there aren't enough parking spaces! Perhaps he/she would suggest demolishing the entire pub to create a huge drive-in open-air cinema in which we could all watch and salivate at the wisdom of Jeremy Clarkson on non-stop repeats of Top Gear.

Nags Head, Reading

Never had a bad pint and never need to ask to be topped up. No other pub comes close.

Coopers Arms, Reading

If they spent as much time and trouble looking after their beer as they do on their Christmas decorations, the world would be a better place.

Mix Cocktail Bar, Reading

If any fit young men would like to treat me to some posh lingerie from Pudding, then buy me a cocktail or two here, I might be persuaded to show my appreciation in the time honoured fashion.

The Fishermans Cottage, Reading

I agree with "believeinbutter" - this pub's best days are long gone. On most nights you're lucky to see more than half a dozen customers here. There were two recent exceptions - on the Friday before Xmas the place was busy, but we were all turfed out at 11pm as it was too much effort for the manager & staff to take advantage of their midnight license. Then on Xmas Eve, the manager & boyfriend were believed to be drunk & asleep upstairs, leaving the customers downstairs to serve themselves!
