The Redback, Acton

Oi..I'm an Essex boy & so is my mate, the redback rocks!

Old shoes & no morals are the key to enjoying what is West London's best Antipodean bar.

The Hammersmith Ram, Hammersmith

I agree whole-heartedly with marius, best pub I have been to in Hammersmith (I have only recently moved there). Now we are in a so-called 24 hr drinking society, decided to check out pubs open past 11pm after a night out in the city. William Morris was shut, the chavvy place opposite was open but some chav thug wanted to 'end me' in the toilets so left before I died laughing.

Walking home, saw the Ram was open & went in. Warm, relaxing atmosphere. It's open to 12 every day but the landlord told me they have a license until 1 Fri & Sat with live music occasionally.

Will be checking this out again.

The Prodigal, City Of London

Always liked this pub. Good beer, good food & good service.

Not sure what else you need from a pub.

P.S. I'm in love with the blond who looks like she runs the place - she's been there years & is from Eastern europe. lovely girl

The Green Man, Bank

Went there last night for the evening with some friends. Thursday nights are Weatherspoons curry nights - 5.99 for a good sized curry wih a pint. Bargain for 6 & my vindaloo had a meaty kck to it!

Seemed to be some beer festival on as there were about 97 beers on pump but I was on the black stuff which wasn't bad (when poured correctly).

Was busy & was a good atmosphere in there - even in non-smoking area. The main bar area it didn't seem that smokey which was good.

All in all, had a nice cheap evening - beer, food & conversation - what more do you want?

The Warwick, Soho

Haven't been there yet but gotta be great as my cousin is the manager. Say hi from me & take the pee out of Sheffield Wednesday!

Hog's Head, Bishopsgate

Bad news. Will no longer be a pub - being turned into a Slug & Lettuce poncy wine bar thingy.

Let's hope they fix the TVs, the gherkin has shagged it's reception & you can't watch anyhting in there.

A 2 for selling out!

The Crosse Keys, Bank

Bank? The Monument is nearer but I'm just splitting hairs.

Big, cheap & unlike 99% of Weatherspoons shows sport. Watched the last few hours of the 5th Ashes test & it was packed - great atmosphere. Then went off to West Ham stuff Villa 4-0 - what a night!

Bar service needs to improve big time - lost rag in there a lot of times by the barman/barmaid serving my 'area' not knowing who is next to be served. Don't they have barstaff schools in Eastern Europe?

The Phoenix, City Of London

It's nice to spend a night in here & not having to give your clothes to Oxfam in the morning coz they stink so much. However, it's on the pricey side but I think they were worried about profits by scaring away the cancer-lovers.

Food good & table service for both drinks & food. Nice barmaids!

They could do with getting Sky Sports & that would attract more custom of a footy evening.

An 8 for having the guts to go non-smoking before it's forced on them.

Stone Horse Paper Cow, Liverpool Street

OK, let's bring things up to date a bit!!

It's called the STONE HORSE (as in the thing that you ride NOT the thing you live in) & it has changed drastically since I was last there. Very spacious, clean & the black stuff wasn't bad - 3.05 a pint which is reasonably high for that bit of the city. Good selection of Bitters & Largers.

Seems popular with diners & has a good menu.

Worth another visit. In the meantime it gets a 6!

Walkabout, Shaftesbury Avenue

An old church I seem to recall, was called Limelite or something before & was a pretty good club. Nevermind, things move on & it's now a Walky.

Last time I was there was the morning of the 22nd Nov 2003 when the MIGHTY English beat the aussies in their own patch. Great atmosphere & drank in there all day without any problems. My only gripe was the insistance of the DJ to play Men at Work a little too often!!

Walkabouts will be Walkabouts & anybody who has been to one before should know what to expect - a drunken, crowded, messy, fun night.

A 10 rating because of the Rugby. Nobody mention the Lions or ya dead!!

The Redback, Acton

Went there on Saturday, great atmosphere, great Live music & lots of SB&B. Can't wait until the next time.

Walkabout, Shepherds Bush

Everybody needs a bit of Walky now & then.

At least you know where you stand with this place. If you don't like it then piss off to the nearest All Bar One.

Thank god it isn't one of the cheesy places that gives you your change on a tray & expect a tip! WHY?? Nobody tips me for doing my job!!
I also noticed they didn't have a guy hanging around the gents trying to give you soap, aftershave, mints....I HATE THAT SO MUCH!!

The Railway Tavern, Liverpool Street

I go there a bit, close to station & reasonable atmosphere. I went there to watch the footy this week, they had the Chelsea vs Arsenal game in the main bar & the Everton vs Man U game upstairs which I thought was a good idea.

The Duke of York, Borough

Ham, Egg & chips is the nuts.

Lagers wet, cold & fizzy. Orangeboom great or if you want to eat some pavement, the Holsten is worth trying.

The Rockingham Arms, Elephant and Castle

All I can say is cheap & chearful!! However, there is nothing chearful about the place.

The cheapness may explain the deluge of sad old piss-heads scattered around the place.

The Elephant and Castle, Elephant and Castle

You are having a laugh, this place is grotsville city!!

Only slightly better than the cesspool otherwise known as the Wetherspoons 5 doors up.

There is nothing decent about anything associated with the E&C, the only pub I would give the time of day is the Duke of York on Southwark Bridge Road.

14 Apr 2005 17:24

The Burrell Arms, Haywards Heath

Shame, sounds like it has gone downhill since I stopped working there back in 95/96.

It was great working my way through the barmaids & breaking up fights....happy times!!

14 Apr 2005 17:05

The Witch, Haywards Heath

Haven't been there for years, used to go there all the time when I worked for Bain Hoggs in HH.

Fondly remember watching England stuff Scotland in Euro 96 & spraying the entire front bar with beer when Gazza scrored.

Say Hi to Jerry.

The George, Enfield

I popped into the Goose after a few drinks in the City last week, mainly to use the toilet. It was packed full of 15 year old Chavs & Chavettes.

Wouldn't recommend it to anybody over 18 unless you want to pull a 15 year old Chavette - not that I condone that sort of thing!!

Enfield is crying out for a decent pub for 30-somethings, any suggestions?

14 Apr 2005 13:11

Hog's Head, Bishopsgate

I tend to go there to meet friends who work nearby. Not bad for a chain & the Guiness Extra Cold isn't bad. Has waitress service so you don't have to venture anywhere near the bar!!
