The Joiners Arms, West Malling

Popped in for a quicky to try the Sam Adams Boston Lager brewed under license by Shepherd Neame. Rather good, I thought, but over 4 a pint????

Price of three pints of bitter "down south" 10.50. Price of 5 pints and a lager in Nellie's 11.10. You can't beat it!

Lovely pub.

The Youngs is still here, but when you're shifting a barrel a day it would be mad to take it off.

However: This pub focusses on fantastic beer produced in Kent (and near surroundings). On the other four handpumps we see Kent Brewery, Old Dairy, Whitstable, Westerham, Goachers, and many others.

Last night's line up was: Old Dairy Copper Top, Whitstable Native, Whitstable Renaissance Ruby Mild Mild, and Kent Brewery Spring Wheat.

There is also a new handpump dedicated to real cider - last night's was a crispy 7.5% "House Cider".

No food these days, but it's a thriving venue for local drinkers who enjoy a range of well-kept ales.

Yes, it did turn in to a wine and cocktails venue, but they failed to make it work and have gone of somewhere else.
New chap in place recently - looking after the beer and hoping to bring it back to its former glory.

Under new management, the pub is building a new reputation for its ales, and planning to install another handpump soon. I'm going to visit on the 19th July, when there will be some rather spectacular Morris Dancing (so I'm lead to believe)

Great pub, now with 6 handpumps (albeit 2 are dedicated to Young's PA). Constantly changing range of good ales. And don't forget the free Pub Quiz on Mondays.

Recently under new management and gradually rebuilding a solid client base. This pub has three handpumps serving beers from the nearby Whistable Brewery. Two of the management team are keen ale buffs and the beers have been very good of late. It has a Tex-Mex theme to the menu as well as serving good ole pub grub. Sunday lunch is also very good value.. If you visit on a Thursday evening or lunchtime on the second Sunday of the month, you may catch a glimpse of the Fabulous Seven Champions Molly Dancers who have adopted the pub as their base of operations.

Timoth Taylor's Landlord in cracking condition on Sunday. Also pleased to see the return of Woodforde's Wherry (it won't last long!)

Man walks into a pub (this one). Is slightly inebriated but asks where the condom machine is. There isn't one. Asks the barman for a double Pernod. Barman (correctly) asks for ID. Bloke offers to show him his tattoos. WHAT? ps the Tribute and Dartmoor were very drinkable.

Great Beer Festival over Trevor's birthday weekend, only a few pints left at the end which were kindly donated to anyone who was left in the pub late last Thursday

No Real Ale available on Sunday night - Is there a plan to turn it into a Chavvy wine and cocktails venue?

I'm not a great lover of Shepherd Neame beers generally but the Spitfire was on top form here last night.

At last the string of temporary managers has gone. New Licensees have moved in and have signed up for life. So far they have managed (apart from a few hours here and there) to keep a good selection on all six of their handpumps. Currently: Hopback Summer Lightning, Jennings Cumberland, Sharps Doombar, St Austell Tribute, Caledonian Deuchars IPA and Black Sheep Best Bitter, all in super condition.

Food is being offered in the evenings and on Sunday lunchtime and the home-made burger I ate there last night was to die for. They will start serving lunches from Monday 23rd.

There's a mini beer festival planned for the August Bank Holiday weekend with 18 on offer including, hopefully, a couple from the new Wantsum Brewery in Canterbury.

In the month that Simon and Fiona have been there, there is a huge change in the feel of the pub. It's clean and welcoming. And those regulars who have voted with their feet over the last 5 years are starting to return.

Good luck to them!
