Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

Maybe I'm biased because I'm an American and always appreciate the chance to drink in a pub older than my country. Yeah, it's always going to draw in tourists because of the fact that it was frequented by Samuel Johnson and Charles Dickens- but besides that it has a very cozy atmosphere, excellent fish n' chips and I like Samuel Smiths.

The Courtfield, Earls Court

Pretty average. Nice location if you want a real quick pint before catching the tube at Earls Court. Generally kind of boring, but no real complaints- nice pool tables and big projection screen for SkySports upstairs.

Still, you'd be better off going to the Blackbird just down the road.

The Devonshire Arms, Camden

People need to get over the whole dress code thing.

I went there on several ocasions... usually in jeans, trainers and a band t-shirt that may have been "alternative" but not Goth (i.e. The Smiths, AFI, The Misfits, Slayer, etc.)- I figure my longhair and usually being with a genuine goth or two helped... but the worst I ever got was a friendly "I'm sorry, but you'll have to take that off to come in" when I was wearing my warm jacket that has Adidas-like stripes (but isn't Adidas) on it and when I did, I was allowed entry. I was also given a friendly "Well, we'll admit this year, but next time you'll have to do better" for my half-arsed costume on Halloween.

I don't think you can judge a whole pub on a bouncer's mood on one occasion (i.e. only one factor), the dresscode seemed pretty loose to me.

Even though I'm not a goth, I enjoyed the genuine goth atmosphere and the music crossed genres a bit (I remember hearing Ministry and Razed in Black to go along with Bauhaus and Fields of the Nephilim). I also really enjoyed the late licence.

I did feel very hesitant about going here with any non-goth friends... but it's nice to have a (rare) place for goths to not worry about being harrassed (although people do seem much more open-minded in London than in the States, generally).

Garlic and Shots, Soho

Sadly, I didn't visit this pub for the first time while I lived in London, but rather on a one-off visit otherwise it might've become my local (even if it was a 20 minute tube ride away).

The crypt has a nice dungeon-like atmosphere and although the musical selection can be repetitive, it was still very refreshing to hear Slayer ("Angel of Death" no less...) and Iron Maiden in a pub. The beer selection is pretty weak (when I visited, I believe the only choices were Stella and San Miguel), but the shotlist is incredible.

It wasn't packed when I went there, but I also believe we went on a week night.

The Cavern, Raynes Park

Always a favourite for lunch at my old workplace, decent selection of beer, good food, nice, cozy atmosphere. The rock n' roll memorabilia was mostly genuinely interesting rather than tacky. Didn't have to deal with the landlord, though, so I guess my review's a bit incomplete...

The Sports Cafe, Haymarket

The only reasons to go here are for 1 quid Carlsbergs on certain nights and to watch American football. I went with mates a couple times who loved it, but that's because they enjoyed being around other Americans. It just made me feel like another anonymous American tourist. Beer prices other than the pound specials make even some clubs look cheap in comparison. Mediocre even by the standards of an American sportsbar.

Until another place comes along that shows American football, however, it gets a "higher than it deserves" 3/10 (I assume people who are bigger NFL fans than me are the only ones who rate it higher...).

The Town of Ramsgate, Wapping

I can't really say much that hasn't already been said. Worth the healthy journey for me (from Earl's Court), a beautiful traditional pub with a bar staff that made a nervous, lonely American kid feel very welcome.
