The New Inn, Church Knowle

Beautiful pub in gorgeous setting. Ate here on a Tuesday night, so maybe not surprising that the atmosphere was zero, a few middle aged couples eating in silence in the main bar. Some quiet music would have helped to disguise the prevailing sound of cutlery on china. Barmaid was rather brusque - moved us on from a table we'd had the temerity to choose ourselves because she said it was reserved even though there was no sign on it. Found the 'No children in the bar By Law' (or similararly worded) notices on a bar rather unfriendly (I don't have children, nor do I like them in pubs but it set an unweloming tone as the first thing you see when you walk in). Food OK, wouldn't make a special trip to eat there. Glad I checked my bill as I'd been charged 11.30 instead of 1.30 for some drinks ... twice!

The Greyhound, Corfe Castle

We ate here twice this week and really liked it. Walked through beer garden to have a our drinks on the bridge to the Castle as the sun went down. Found the food pretty good on the whole, though on the first night it took a while to arrive, and then my venison burger was missing the advertised chutney, but that was a minor quibble and the second night's meals were excellent. Didn't find it too expensive, but then we live in SW London so maybe we're used to overpaying. Will definitely go back next time we're in the area.

The Victoria, Surbiton

Looks gloomy and a bit intimidating from the outside but indoors it is really smart and comfortable. Nice courtyard beer garden with decked verandah. Excellent roast beef on a Sunday, highly recommended. A nice pub for 'grown ups' and my favourite pub in the area.

The Hare and Hounds, Sway

Really nice country pub with imaginative menu of well cooked food. Nice garden, would definitely drop by again if I was in the area.

The Woodman, St Leonards

Pub looks nice but has NO soul, obviously an identikit chain pub catering for the tourist market. Food terrible, two steaks had to be sent back (rare steak was medium, medium steak was well done/cremated), burger was like boot leather. Staff were friendly but that is the only good thing to say about it.
