Dark Horse, Camberwell

Visited The Dark horse for the first time earlier this week and was very impressed. A very good cocktail list, I tried a couple and they were fab. Smiling, friendly staff, pleasant, relaxing surroundings. Haven't tried the food yet, but hope to give it a go soon. All in all I think this will be a great new bar for Camberwell.

The Castle, Camberwell

Hmmmm...Well, all I can say is, I'm a local, and I'm certainly not an old fart or an 'ale drinker' and I really like this place!!

Fair enough, Mr 'ex-local', you're entitled to express your opinion, but I can't believe you are slating the management for actually listening to and responding to people's opinions and suggestions?? You'd rather be ignored, then?

I agree, the Snug Bar was a great place, and had a lot of character, and at first I was very disappointed when it was taken over and became The Castle, but all credit to those in charge they have turned it into a great place to chill out of a weekend or for midweek drinks, the food is pretty good and I have never experienced inept service, they're all really friendly and attentive.

Less than mediocre?? This is one of the only decent pubs in Camberwell, have you never been in the Silver Buckle or the Hermits Cave?

Just proves you can't please everybody, I guess!

The Roadhouse, Covent Garden

Open mic night is back Monday nights from 9th Jan 2006, I have been a regular to this for a while now and it is a really great night, lots of talented performers and a fun, supportive atmosphere.

Waxy O'Connors, Piccadilly

Not a fan. Far too crowded and touristy for my liking. My boyfriend loves it, think he has some fond memories of nights out with the lads b4 he met me!!

On Anon, Piccadilly Circus

The bar staff are great but the bouncers and toilet attendants can be rude and aggressive. Have had some great nights here but you need to get there early for happy hour as the prices are extortionate otherwise.

The Couch, Soho

A great place to chill out after a hard days shopping!

Cheers, Regent Street

It's very touristy and there are much nicer places to go in the area. Cocktails are okay, food not bad, all a bit overpriced.

The Glassblower, Piccadilly

Nope. Cheaper than surrounding bars but there's a good reason...V. poor service, dodgy wines and it's dingy and cramped - poor use of space.

The Warwick, Soho

Have had some great nights here - most memorable was my engagement party two years ago where they treated us to eight free bottles of champagne because they double booked our booth - result! Don't remember much of the evening but I know I had a great time!

The Jazz After Dark, Soho

Lovely little bar with live jazz every night 'til late. Pricey drinks wise, haven't tried the tapas style food but it looks quite nice. Can get rather crowded - arrive early in the evening if you want a table near the band.

The Boardwalk, Soho

Great happy hour, decent enough inexpensive food, weekday evenings it's dead by 9.00pm as people tend to take advantage of the happy hour and then move on - there's so much to choose from in Greek Street.

Babel, Clapham Junction

Not cheap but still one of the better places to drink in this area, if you can't go too far from the station. Bar snacks were disappointing at 5 a pop(overcooked chicken wings). Decent wine selection.

The George Canning, Denmark Hill

Great pub for weekend drinks, but the food isn't great. Like the squishy sofas.

The Old Dispensary, Camberwell

This place could be good but it needs to decide whether it's a restaurant or a bar. The food looks fantastic but no-one wants to eat there because :

A) The tables are not suitable for eating a full meal and they are too close together, more geared towards drinking than eating.

B) They are charging restaurant prices but the ambience doesn't warrant those prices. If I'm paying 40 - 50 for a meal for two I'd rather eat it in an actual restaurant than a gastro pub.

They have a good drinks selection and the decor is interesting. The bar staff need to be a bit more 'with it' but once it's found it's feet I think it will be popular - if they sort out the food situation.

The Hermits Cave, Camberwell

I'm sorry, but I can't see what all the fuss is about. Have tried it once and the only way I would go in there again is if the only other place open in Camberwell was the Silver Buckle. It's smoky, smelly and, at least when I was there, full of beered up blokes with an overdose of testosterone looking for a fight. Maybe I caught it on an off night...But I'd much rather drink in the Funky Munky or the Castle across the road.

Vauxhall Griffin, Vauxhall

Agree with Theo about the strange ambience. There's nothing particularly unpleasant about this place but nothing particularly inspiring either. The Wheatsheaf just a few yards up the road has bags more character.

The Wheatsheaf, Vauxhall

This is a great pub. Tasty, filling lunchtime food, a nice selection of wines and beers, and Dennis is a sweetheart. I don't work in Vauxhall any more and I really miss this little gem.

14 Jun 2005 13:37

The Express Tavern, Kew Bridge

I paid 3.55 for a gin and slimline tonic which I thought a bit excessive (Okay, it was Bombay Sapphire, but we're not exactly in a London club here!!). There's a nice beer garden out the back which is great for the summer. Food's pretty standard and the service can be a bit hit and miss but there aren't many drinkeries in the area so it's always going to popular with locals and office workers.

The Castle, Camberwell

This place used to be the Snug Bar, which I loved. At first, I was very disappointed when the Snug closed down and The Castle took it's place. Where the Snug was cosy and cavelike and all about a mad night out, the castle is cool and airy and much more 'dignified'. But it's grown on me. The food is very nice - I recommend the fillet steak burger - and it's a comfortable and relaxing place to hang out. It gets too smoky sometimes, and I'm not keen on the gigantic wineglasses - unless you get a bottle of wine you feel like you've hardly got a mouthful in there! The wine list is very good though and they are about to start serving Leffe blonde beer according to a sign outside so that gets a thumbs up from me.

Funky Munky, Camberwell

Lovely place for a leisurely brunch on a Sunday, very laid back vibe weekday evenings and lively Friday/Sat nights (can get a bit crowded and smoky). Recently 'revamped' and has a much better layout now and loads of new cocktails - loving the cucumber martini! Avoid the house wine it's a bit ropey...

The Roadhouse, Covent Garden

Love this place, one of the best happy hours in London between 5.00pm and 7.30pm, Friday nights there are always great bands and a real party atmosphere. They have a fantastic open mic session on Monday evenings where anyone can get up and sing in a really laid back, supportive and friendly atmosphere. The cocktails are fabulous and great burgers n'ribs too.
