Always found this to be a reliable boozer. Good beer, decent staff and a well cared-for interior. I once saw Johnson Beharry VC in here with his family. Albert_Campion - 9 Jul 2008 16:02
I'm a fan of Sam Smith's anyway, so this had a pretty good chance of a pretty good review, but is a nice pub. Not sure what happened to son_of_peter - the staff were perfectly pleasant. The upstairs bar feels almost like an Edwardian drawing room; the only thing it lacked was cigar smoke. The drinks are the standard Sam Smith's variety, the beer was pretty good and, despite being a Saturday night near Oxford Street, it wasn't heaving with people; I suspect it's just far enough away that it doesn't feature on the tourist trail. Like all Sam Smith's, it's actually a pub - the details are original, there's no music or TV and the beer is actually beer. unoriginalname38 - 16 Dec 2007 12:50
really quite shocked at this place. went there last night with some friends, quietly drinking away but we noticed that the staff were generally pretty rude and unhelpful. silly things like rudely telling me not to leave my paper on an empty table next to us becuase 'it might get thrown away' (there were only 2 staff and the pub was virtually empty - she was trying to be a pain). when we went i said, sarcastically, 'thanks for the hospitality' and they wend crazy, telling us not to come back and shouting at my friends! we really were just quietly having a drink and it was all a bit of a shock! shame really, becuase i do support SS pubs, but the girls in here should be put down son_of_peter - 16 Mar 2007 10:11
A Sam Smiths Pub wich automatically marks it 7/10 for me but it does not have the same individual charms of the 4 other SS pubs in the area (Fitzroy, champion, bricklayers, angel) That said there is nothing wrong with this pub with some sumptious original features and of course MR Smiths own brand beers (loving the new 'pure brewed lager') Absolutely fine for a quieter post-work drink with non bank breaking prices. maximcondor - 22 Feb 2006 16:41
Yet another cannon in Sam Smith’s West End armoury offering the usual range of Sam Smiths cheap but like ‘em or not beers. At least they have the Old Brewery Bitter on handpump unlike many other Sam Smith establishments in London. The pub itself is full of character - a single room with bare floors, latticed windows, dim lights and very dark ceilings, paneling and wall coverings. Note also the mosaic floor in the door lobby - it is small features like this that weed out the plastic renovated pubs. There is a dartboard area and a further bar upstairs (not tried it). It can get very busy with office workers after and can be a bit smoky but is worth a visit if you can hack the produce. RogerB - 12 Jan 2006 10:44
