| Used to be a fantastic pub, the Sunday roasts were worth walking a fair way in the rain for! Sadly, has gone the way of many of the formerly independent pubs, and the food now has a distinctly 'microwave' feel to it. The ales are the major disappointment here, the London Pride and Old Speckled hen used to be really well-kept and made this pub one of the few reliable places to visit on any day. Now, despite there being four hand-pumps, you'd be lucky to find more than one or two ales on. Unfortunately it seems these days as if packing the place full to bursting on the weekend and getting rid of as much poor-quality ale is the order of the day. A real shame... | Probably the best pub in the Cathays area - and just a few minutes walk from Queen Street. Very nice pub which usually has an interesting selection of beer on the hand pumps (though on a few occasions all real ales have been off). Also has a large beer garden - very pleasant to sit out in the summer before launching into a pub crawl around town. Crow_Valley - 4 Jun 2006 22:39 |
| The Pen and Wig - what happy memories! A few years ago it was one of the few city centre pubs with any attempt at a beer garden/outdoor area. So was very popular in summer, many an afternoon was spent getting drunk and sun burnt here. The inside is quite cosy too and they serve a good selection of wines and beers. Sal - 18 Jun 2004 11:58 |
| originally a lawyers lunch place, but now has a v. good atmosphere with quality staff. amazing food (big portions, i promise) and finally a pub quiz which swung it for me... Bells - 25 Sep 2003 02:43 |
