user reviews of Rose Valley Tavern, Norwich

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Nice local with range of Adnams ales. some were better kept than others. Food was very good and freshly prepared, which meant a wait of about 40 minutes. No real inkling of this been a student Pub, but they're probably still on Xmas Holiday

As I`ve mentioned before on this site, Norwich’s main student area manages to avoid producing the bland, superficial and pretty wank spate of pubs that for some reason tend to breed in most other cities student districts. There are some character filled and well-looked after watering holes across the “Golden Triangle”, from the earthy Eaton Cottage to the picturesque Garden House.

Unfortunately though there are a few pubs that slip back into type, and the Rose is just about one of them. The interior really is bland if washed in an odd orange colouring with a standard chainy type feel that looks like a badly decorated Slug and Lettuce (Cue cheapish wooden floors, characterless bar and the usual fittings). Even more annoying is that throughout there are many irritatingly garish adverts promoting the latest 8 for 1 deal that soooo delights Chavs across the country. Yawn.

Still despite the distinct lack of appeal in its interior there are a few things that drag some credit back for the Rose. The tap selection is (in keeping with most of Norwich) pretty decent, with a nice set of ale/bitter/lager/bottle options and despite its student focussed obsession the clientele tends to be reasonable, primarily because the giant turd pubs on the riverside attract even the local arseholes. And where else would you get a 50 something owner with a pony tail, flowing beard and a sarong propping up the bar? Doesn’t quite make up for the lack of charm elsewhere in the pub (especially as he appears to be a mute), but it does add a bit of homely character.

In summary, and maybe a little generously, I am going to give the Rose an average 6/10 – it`s alright for a “only one-once in a month” stop off, but lacks any real character to make you want to become a regular patron.

Comedy pub, with entertaining staff but dont go on a hot summers night because they run out of ice

A garish pub if ever there was one.

The owner's "flair" really comes across in the Orange and Grey colouring, and slightly uncomfortable seating.

Give it a miss! Over 300 other pubs in Norwich that serve better beer! Oh and Unthank area has plenty of good pubs if you're really thirsty! Try York, Rose Tavern(*) or Mad Moose!
