Elderly barman please note, these days when a couple come to the bar it is good manners to speak to them both, and not ignore the woman, especially if she is the one with her purse in her hand! Most of the specials on the menu were off, the aged couples "enjoying" the set price menu chewed glumly and my meal appeared garnished with a piece of dead parsley. Only visited because my family once ran it...aunt Annie will be spinning in her grave. Couldn't fault the young girl waitressing though, the only bit of sparkle in the place. c_and_j - 14 Apr 2012 19:09
just had a meal at the windmill first impressions of the pub is that the outside and gardens are very well kept with a play area for the children inside although the decor may seem a bit dated it was very clean and tidy the staff were very friendly polite and helpful food was ordered from both the standard menu and the chefs specials board as well as the chef cooking something for the children the wait for the food wasn't long and when it arrived it looked as good as it sounded on the menu and tasted even better the restaurant serves traditional food such as shepherds pie and cod and chips as well as more adventurous dishes such as the wild rabbit pie which i opted for it tasted superb i would definitely recommend the windmill to friends and family it cost £62 for four adults and two kids to have two courses it would well be worth the drive from london again i cannot understand why they never had people queuing out the door to eat here winebuff76 - 24 Sep 2011 20:10
Stopped for lunch at the Windmill as the pub appears so attractive from the outside. Inside was spotless and tidy and we were really looking forward to lunch. We orderered a two course lunch each and had to wait some while before it turned up. The baked potatoes were underdone, the Yorkshire pudding overdone and the portions very small. Considering this was served as an individual meal and therefore with the corresponding attention when cooked and served it did not compare well in quality with the carvery market where you can also eat as much as you like. Very disappointed and will be looking elsewhere for regular meals out. Silverhairedbee - 7 Aug 2011 09:54
I go here once a week. Bazz and Annette used to run this boozer and did a fine job of it for many years. Occasionally a 'gamekeeper' would approach Bazz at the bar and over a pint, open his coat to expose a brace of pheasants. Some money changed hands discretely and they were on the menu shortly afterward. They left three or four years back and the new owner is still trying his best to make a go of it. The bar staff are kids, doing their best. On the positive side, the excellent chef that used to work in the Seaview (East Preston) is now doing the cooking. I was there last night and ordered some pork ribs from the restaurant: the rack was over a foot long under BBQ sauce with chips and salad, £9 so good value. Garden is big and a sun-trap until around early evening. There are two bars, the noisy one with TV/Jukebox/Bar-billiards/etc and the (overly small) one that has a few tables around a real blazing fire in the winter. Real ales are on offer as well as all the usual stuff. de101 - 22 Apr 2011 11:43
Years ago this pub was run by Keith and Jean Tucker and it was great. Now what a dump. Sirly staff and rotten food at restaurant prices. My advice to all is to avoid it like the plague. There are plenty of better pubs very near. Use them. gannochy - 30 Dec 2009 14:02
