I have been drinking in the Ship and Anchor for just on 23 years but I was one of the locals told to drink somewere else as was the rest of the locals. The land lady is to pubs what Wayne Sleep is to rugby league.
We sent an unknown customer to check it out on a Saturday night and 2 people apart from him, I think this says it all.
We all drink in the Maypole now just round the corner nice and busy with a good pint and a landlord who wants you there.
Sorry Ship and Anchor you are the best pub in the south with the worst landlady

Have just returned from spending the bank holiday weekend at the Ship & Anchor campsite. Hard to believe some of the previous comments are about the same pub? I found the lady running the pub (Joy) to be pleasant, happy & extremely helpful, probably more than I'd experienced in most pubs I've been in (& that's quite a few!). I'd agree, the food & the beer are priced a bit high - but the quality was good. I'm a real ale drinker - which is something that a lot of pubs can get seriously wrong, not here though. As i say, apart from the prices I'd thoroughly recommend this place (& the campsite).

Several of us were supporting the Swimming Gardener on his Arun Pub Crawl and decided we would stop for drinks and a good view of all the brilliant swimmers who took part in this charity swim for the Chestnut Tree House and RNLI. I was astounded to be greeted by the proprietor who promptly made us all feel unwelcome. She said she couldn,t possibly accomodate us as it was a bank holiday weekend ! (?). Does she alway treat potential paying customers in this manner. It was a shame, we were having a wonderful time and all were in good spirits until the encounter with this woman. We had friends from Oxford with us, who had travelled down that morning, they understandably felt upset by the hostile reception we received. All we required was a sit down and some refreshments, which we found in a much friendlier atmosphere at the Look and Sea centre. I was just wondering if all the good reviews where actually written by the landlady herself - just a thought!

I had heard by word of mouth about the legendary animosity one could encounter at this pub, and 20-30 people on Saturday confirmed this. There was a charity event, a swim called the River Arun Pub Crawl, coming down the river to raise funds for a local Childrens Hospice. When a group of spectators came to the Ship and Anchor to watch the swimmers and have a drink, they were turned away in no uncertain terms despite explaining to the landlady what they were doing. They left, and some ended up at The Arun View, some went back to the Black Rabbit, where they were welcomed, warmed and spent their money. I am sorry that local legend has on this occasion proved correct.

Just had a fab weekend at the camp site next to this pub. I had read these reviews before going, so was a little worried. I have to say I was so pleasantly surprised, the food was really very good, the land lady couldn't do enough, was so welcoming & friendly. We had quite a few children with us & this didn't seem to bother her or any of the staff. I have never written a review on anything before...but felt I had to here as the other reviews have been unjust in my opinion. Wish I could go back for their Sunday roast today!
