user reviews of the Prince Arthur, Walton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I've been meaning to pay this historic Liverpool pub a visit for some time and I finally got around to visiting on Sunday lunchtime. There are no cask ales here - just a selection of keg offerings - Guinness, Carling, John Smiths, Tetleys Smooth Flow & Dark Mild, Strongbow Original & Pear Cider & Fosters. But the real reason to come here is the interior. The tilework is stunning and all of the different drinking areas have been kept in their original form. Reminds me very much of the Stork on the Wirral and very much worth a visit to admire this fine example of a pub. The barmaid was very sullen and there are no other pubs around here (most of them are called 'Prince' something for some reason) worth visiting. There may have been arsonist attacks and cannabis factories found here. But don't let any of this put you off visiting the Prince Arthur.

From the Liverpool Echo 06/07/09:-

FIREFIGHTERS tackling a blaze at a city pub stumbled across a suspected cannabis factory.

Arsonists are thought to have poured petrol on the stairs at the Prince Arthur, in Rice Lane, Walton, before setting it alight.

Three crews from Longmoor Lane Fire Station tackled the blaze which broke out at around 4.20am on Sunday.

It is the third arson attack on the pub since September and the thirteenth pub belonging to businessman Ian Caine and his family to be targeted by arsonists since the start of June.

A feeding system, used to cultivate cannabis, and a number of plants were found by firefighters on the second floor.

The fire was contained to the ground floor after a steel door at the top of the stairs stopped it from spreading.

Most of the Grade II-listed buildings Victorian features are believed to have been saved.

Traditional local with some fantastic original tiling and other ornate features. Oddly triangular bar with a seperate room and a wide passageway for more standing.

Had my first pint in here when I was 12, though it's definitely not a kid's pub.

The beer was keg the last time I went in but the Guinness was good.

Nearest pub to Walton Hospital. As an outpatient, I once lay on a bed for seven hours waiting for an operation, staring out of the window at the Prince Arthur and wishing I could be lying on the floor in there instead.

Do not confuse with the other Prince Albert or Alfred further up Rice Lane which isn't up to much.
